RT Seven Lite - RC build 1.7.0 and Beta build 2.6.0
johnhc replied to bensam56's topic in Unattended Windows 7/Server 2008R2
Why is this not a good idea? If a driver is signed then this flag is ignored. If a driver in unsinged then you would get a popup during your unattended installation if the driver was not integrated with the /ForceUnsigned flag Granted if you have 1 or 2 of these then its not a problem. But lets talk when you have 60+ pupups during install and you have to manually accept them before install continues. This used to be a major problem for me during the Vista era because i didnt know about the flag. But still even 1 of these popups would halt the unattended install. Tomorrow, like a lot of other things, people are going to disagree on these types of checks. I think unsigned drivers are not a good idea. The signing was put in by MS to offer some protection against problems. Some people turn off SFC and DEP, but that sounds dangerous to me. I understand your many pop-up during install concern and would avoid that with the application of /ForceUnsigned switch as needed, not on all drivers. Only one of my 8 drivers is unsigned. I am also leaning on the RAID vendor to provide a signed driver. I suspect RT7Lite turns off SFC and sets the Uxtheme patch, but have not seen this spelled out and don't see the options anywhere. Options are provided in nLite, what I am used to using. Thanks for your reply. Enjoy, John. -
b-man, please look at this thread - found it with a search. Enjoy, John.

I received a Patrist Xporter XT BOOST, 8 GB, 200x (read speed) USB stick today and prepared it for my W7 image (about 4.3 GB) and wrote all the files/folders to the stick. It took 12 minutes. This is in comparison to 1 hour and 20 minutes on my older 16 GB generic stick. This is almost 7 time faster and well worth the $23. Enjoy, John.

johnhc replied to bensam56's topic in Unattended Windows 7/Server 2008R2
noob2k3, I am new to RT7Lite, and probably cannot help you. But, please post some information on your system. What OS, version of .NET Framework, version of waik, if installed, version of RT7Lite and any other information you think might help. Enjoy, John. -

Zumoc, thanks. I have not gotten that far as of yet and am still wrestling with more basic problems. Enjoy, John. -
RT Seven Lite - RC build 1.7.0 and Beta build 2.6.0
johnhc replied to bensam56's topic in Unattended Windows 7/Server 2008R2
Zumoc, all this input clutters up the thread. I would think attaching this kind of stuff would be much more useful. People really interested can then DL it and search it and whatever. Just a suggestion. Enjoy, John. -
Sousemouse, yes. What I do is copy my CD into a folder and keep that copy. When I am ready to run nLite, I copy from this folder into my working folder and always run nLite against my working folder, using the Last Session I have saved. The next time, I delete the Windows files/folders from my working folder and copy a new set. I have set up a small batch file to do this for me. Enjoy, John.
-
Sousemouse, please see attached. Also please see the nLite Guide in the Stickies above if you have not. Enjoy, John.
-
Sousemouse, what is rootsupd.exe? In general you cannot place .exe files in the Hot Fix section. You mentioned AddOns in your first post, but I see none. I suspect you have run nLite more than once against the same source - a real no-no. This is supported by the fact that I see Components and Unattended Tasks in your Last Session but neither is selected. We have a serious incongruity here, please explain. Enjoy, John.
-
Sousemouse, we need to see your Last Session. As it says in large bold RED above, please attach (not paste) it. We also need to know any errors you got in running nLite and installing - you should get none. Screen shots would be very useful. Please make sure you have selected the nLite option Tweaks-Boot and Shutdown to Disable automatic restart on System Failure. This should allow you to see the Stop Code - please post it. Enjoy, John.

RT Seven Lite - RC build 1.7.0 and Beta build 2.6.0
johnhc replied to bensam56's topic in Unattended Windows 7/Server 2008R2
In my post#649, I asked about boot critical and unsigned drivers. Getting no answer, I mounted my images (using dism) and found that the boot.wim image (index 2) had no added drivers. All the added drivers did show up in the install.wim image (index 4). The driver in question is the 3Ware RAID driver and is required in the boot.wim for SetUp to find my HDD. I would not be able to install this image on HW unattended. It is also unsigned and I got no error message. I suspect this means all drivers are being added with the ForceUnsigned switch. I do not think this is a good idea. I hope someone will explain this to me. Enjoy, John. -
RT Seven Lite - RC build 1.7.0 and Beta build 2.6.0
johnhc replied to bensam56's topic in Unattended Windows 7/Server 2008R2
Tomorrow, thanks for your reply. I currently have a AutoUnattend.xml that creates a user account and assigns a PW for the Administrator account. I was assuming that a program like RT7Lite would allow me to do this in the Unattended section as nLite does (and I am used to). I will look closer at the NetBIOS options in Services. In general I do not use blank PWs. I have a running .xml and just looking into RT7Lite for it's automated features, mainly removing packages and tweaks. So far, I am thinking I might as well stick to my .xml, but I have a lot of testing/playing to do. Thanks again, John. -
Jey109, yep, a real toughie! We need to see your Last Session.ini. It should be on the CD you used to install your nLited XP. I am afraid you have removed IE core, which means real headaches, as you know. Please let us look at your Last Session and we'll see if help is possible without re-installing. I should point out that there is a sub-forum here installing XP from a USB stick. I suggest you should take a look. It actually may be easier to start over (including begging/borrowing a CD drive; you can probably buy one at Newegg.com for less than $30) than failing repeatedly using what you have. There are also many advantages to a clean install. Enjoy, John.

Error integrating hotfixes for Win7 Ultimate
johnhc replied to sheetzdw's topic in Unattended Windows 7/Server 2008R2
sheetzdw, don't know, but my WSIM version is 6.1.7600.16385 (I am runnign XP x64 and DLed the latest WAIK recently) and I have no trouble integrating updates. You might try getting up to date and see if that helps. It might be useful to let us know what update(s) is/are failing. Enjoy, John. -
RT Seven Lite - RC build 1.7.0 and Beta build 2.6.0
johnhc replied to bensam56's topic in Unattended Windows 7/Server 2008R2
I DLed and installed the latest (1.0.7) with no problems. I had tried it briefly before (on XP x64), so have little knowledge, but I do have some questions. One of my drivers is unsigned and it is a boot critical driver. I see no way to specify either condition. Does RT7Lite determine this or have I missed something? On the components page, I see on the right a Defaults. I assume this means that if I don't change this, then these components will be removed or deactivated (IE for example)? If so, which? I could not find defragger or FAX. Did I just overlook them? Now that I have completed my run and done a commit, can I start again with the same folder and remove additional components, add drivers or updates or must I start over? When I went to Commit I noticed I could not check the "Optimize both boot.wim and install.wim" radio button. Why? Where is the imaged mounted to? Thanks for any help. Enjoy, John. EDIT: I did not see a way to create a new account. Possible? To specify an Administrator PW, it required me to check "Skip user creation". Is this really necessary? I saw no way to specify network adapter options (example, turn off NetBIOS). Possible? Is there a place/document that might answer some/all of these questions? -
esarault, you are welcome - glad to help. Please go ahead and attach your Last Session, so we can have a look. Enjoy, John.

So tired of fighting with answer files please help
johnhc replied to gotenks98's topic in Unattended Windows 7/Server 2008R2
gotenks98, please attach your .xml file and we will take a look. Also, please remove all private data as PWs, Keys, etc. Enjoy, John. EDIT: The unattend.chm file says: -
esarault, here is the solution for the 3Ware-LSI driver not integrating in nLite. Don't know about the reboot but need some more information. Please attach your Last Session as requested above in large bold RED letters. Also we need to know the Stop Code on the BSOD. If you have not specified in nLite Tweaks-Boot and Shutdown to Disable automatic restart on System Failure, please do so. If you can get into Safe Mode (F8 during your reboot), then go to Properties on My Computer and disable the automatically restart option. When you run nLite, always start with a fresh copy of your CD files/folders and run nLite only one time. Enjoy, John.

So tired of fighting with answer files please help
johnhc replied to gotenks98's topic in Unattended Windows 7/Server 2008R2
gotenks98, you can also run Windows System Image Manager (WSIM) against your .xml file and it will do certain checking of it. It has found several problems for me and allowed to test some things without doing a failed install. I also use VMware Player to test my ISOs. It is free and I am sure there are more available. Enjoy, John. -
znelbok, for this and your other post, I would like to see your Last Session (please attach, not paste) and a screen shot of your original driver folder. I have never heard of nLite missing a .sys file simply because it was in another folder. Also please attach your txtsetup.oem and the .inf files. To see if the drivers are signed, I look at the Digital Signatures (Properties-Digital Signatures tab-Details)on the .sys and .cat files. If there is no .cat file, then they are not signed and I think if the signature on the .sys file is later than the .cat, then Windows consider them not signed. Please let us know what you learn. Enjoy, John. EDIT: I just looked at all my nLite processed drivers in the NLDRV folder (in Windows folder) and I have one driver (Catalyst display driver) that has the .sys file in another folder. The .inf file points to this folder and it has always worked fine. This is, however, a PnP driver and not a text mode driver. If you get a chance to run a test, please run nLite again (starting with a fresh copy of your CD files/folders), use your original RAID driver set, then look in the NLDRV folder at that driver. You really only need to run the Drivers Task.

nice_guy75, is the attached what you are looking for? As you can see I opened it in XN Resource Editor, found here. I am not sure this is the best one for this job, but I have used it on my XP x64 system and created the attached screen shot on my W7 x64 under VM. If you double click the message text you want to change, then you can edit it. When I did these kinds of changes on XP, I had to run with System File Checker (SFC) turned off (also called WFP). Don't know yet how this works on W7. Please let us know what you learn. Enjoy, John.

Ultraform, we would have preferred that you had attached your Last Session. Please see the area in the lower left of the reply window for Attachments. First you Browse to the file, then click Attach This file. Now that it is here, we'll continue. I see nothing really wrong, but someone else needs to look your updates because I am running XP x64 and am not familiar with 32 bit updates. I did a Google translate on the word Default and found that Standard is the word in Swedish, so I don't understand what your theme problem might be. We do need you to answer my earlier question about your source original CD. Has it been modified before by any other program? Please post a screen shot of a Windows Explorer view of your CD. This can be attached. If you want to see it the theme problem is tied up with the update problem, then starting from a fresh copy of your CD files/folders make an nLite run with no updates. I hope you are using a virtual system to tests your ISOs. VMware Player, VirtualPC and VirtualBox are all free. Enjoy, John.

Ultraform, you need to attach your Last Session as requested in the large bold RED letters above. Some of the updates cannot be integrated with nLite. I use XP x64, so cannot help with 32 bit updates, but plenty here can. There are Update Packs on the RyanVM forum, but do not know if there is one for Swedish. Please take a look, it will make your life easier if there is. I don't have a clue why the 98 Theme is showing, but we'll look at the Last Session and see if we see something. Has your original source been processed by any other program(s) before you got it? Enjoy, John.
