Boot Screen Background (Creating And Changing)
johnhc replied to DennyMK's topic in LogonUI & Boot Screens
abhagipagalpremi, I am sorry but I don't know what you are asking. Do you want to know how to change the text in the boot screen? The boot screen is an image file, so to change anything, including text, edit the image with whatever tool you like and change it. The text is contained in the image. If you need to ask further questions, please enter your question in your native language and use Google (or other) Translate to convert it to English. Enjoy, John. -
Stuck at "Setup is preparing your desktop"
johnhc replied to _matt's topic in Unattended Windows 7/Server 2008R2
_matt, if it helps any, you are not the only one with the "video performance" problem. Here is another thread, but with no answer. You might send these posters a PM and see if any cure was found. I am not familiar with VMware Work Station, so don't know it that is a possible problem. I have set my display parameters (1920/1080, 60 Hz and 32 bit color) using both Player and HW with no problems. I have an ATI video card and have injected drivers for it and installed on VMware Player and HW with no problem. I have had a driver problem on Player causing a 07B BSOD. It makes no sense, since I don't expect a VM to even consider my South Bridge driver, but removing it cured my problem and apparently it is not needed on HW. I also install many applications via the <FirstLogonCommands>. I just call a batch file which installs such as .NET 4.0, DirectX latest, Java, Flash, Adobe Rdr, Open Office and several more. No problems here either. My only idea right now is just to get to an installing and operating system. I would start by not setting any display quantities, removing all installation of applications and in general any out of the ordinary stuff. When you get down to a successful system install, then start back till you can see the problem. Another thing to try is, of course, installing on HW and see how it goes. Enjoy, John. -
Stuck at "Setup is preparing your desktop"
johnhc replied to _matt's topic in Unattended Windows 7/Server 2008R2
_matt, are you using VMware Player? I was using VMware Server and ran into some hang problems (doing simple Find in notepad). When I went to the VMware Forum, I found that Server was EOL, several people had this problem and VMware Player was free. Player fully supports W7. I have been using it for a while now with no problems. In my AutoUnattend.xml I set my display variables except DPI. If nothing else comes up, you might try dropping the DPI setting. Enjoy, John. -
Stuck at "Setup is preparing your desktop"

_matt, some questions. I thought running of setupcomplete.cmd was automatic when it was found by SetUp in the C:\Windows\Setup\scripts directory. I wonder if SetUp is getting confused here. Do you see any of the Echo command output from your setupcomplete.cmd? Have you tested all of your silent installers? Enjoy, John. -
CyberPhunk, I am not getting much traction here. I am curious why you are using GUI Attended for Unattended Mode? Please try it with the Unattended Mode set to Fully Automatic. Also, take a look at the Help (? in circle) next to the Unattended Mode pull down. Enjoy, John.

Kindari, you should see no errors running nLite or installing an nLited CD. If you are, something is not correct. I suspect you have run nLite more than once against the same source. You should always start with a fresh copy of your CD files/folders and run nLite only once. Please post a screen shot of some of the errors. If you are running a virtual system, this will be easy. VMware Player, VurtualPC and VirtualBox are free and I strongly recommend their use. BTW, "Explorer-Launch folder windows in a separate process" exposes a Windows bug and should not be used. This has nothing to do with your errors. Enjoy, John.

We made it almost a month, but I am getting logged out and having login failures again. This started about an hour ago. Hope someone will take a look and see what changed recently. Thanks, John. Edit: I was just logged out again. 6.1.2010, 07:17 PM EDIT: Just happened again but this time I could not login without clearing the IE cache and deleting MSFN cookies. 6.1.2010, 08:05 PM

CyberPhunk, please look in your I386 folder of your nLited folder and find a file called winnt.sif. Open it with notepad and look for ProgramFilesDir keyword and see if your value is set. You can post this data if you like, but be sure it does not contain any private information. Do you really have an E disk? Is it formated in NTFS? Have you run nLite more than once against the same source folder? You should always start with a fresh copy of your original CD files/folders and run nLite only one time. Enjoy, John.

esarault, I don't have an answer for you but some information. The cmd.exe is the command prompt running the xcopy (or the cmdow) command. Since I do not know what cmdow @ /HID does, I cannot tell you the result. It may be why you see nothing. Normally I would think your would at least see the xcopy command lines. I run a batch file out of RunOnce and I can see things running, but the xcopy does not give a file by file list. This would probably be very long and undesirable anyway. The xcopy command is well defined, including switches, in Help and Support (Start menu). There is an xcopy.exe file in the System32 folder and I assume it is the xcopy command. I would suggest you just display a message when starting each folder and suggest the user look at the HDD activity and Task Manager for evidence of a running system. I am curious why you are copying these two folders? Enjoy, John.

Possible to install W7 from a flat?
johnhc replied to johnhc's topic in Unattended Windows 7/Server 2008R2
cluberti, thanks for your reply. Since I am doing most of my W7 preperation on my XP x64 system, I think it would be faster for me to just install from there. I will not be installing to the same partition as I am running on - figured that was a no-no. This saves me the trouble of creating an ISO and writing a DVD or USB and it should be faster. Thanks, John -
jaclaz jaclaz, if you will read my entire reply, you will see I that I did not propose that the USB be booted but copied to his HDD and run from there. Enjoy, John.

Some time ago, I ran across an article about installing Windows from a flat (HDD). Since I am running XP x64 and W7 x64 on two different partitions on the same machine, can I simply start (from my XP x64 System) Setup from the set of W7 files/folders and install it on the on another partition? Thanks for any comments. Enjoy, John.

RT Seven Lite - RC build 1.7.0 and Beta build 2.6.0
johnhc replied to bensam56's topic in Unattended Windows 7/Server 2008R2
bensam56, a suggestion: In order to make the Last Session more useful for debugging, I suggest you add the following information as a minimum: Date and time of the Rt7Lite run. Version of Rt7Lite installed. Running OS version and Service Pack. Version of .NET install. Version of WAIK installed. I also suggest that the Last Session be enabled by default with an option to turn it off. Any other information you can think of to include when you are debugging would be good. Enjoy, John. -
NickCarraway, I assume by "disc drive" you mean your optical drive. I don't think booting from a virtual drive will do you any good. My suggestion is to take your nLited CD (I assume you have one) to a friends house and copy it on to a USB stick. Do the same for the original Windows CD. Then using a repartitioning program, create a new partition on your HDD large enough to contain a Windows system. I am not familiar with partitioning programs but I think you can find a free one that will move some files around and create a new partition without causing your current installed Windows to fail. Copy the files/folders from the CD to your running partition, not the new one. If your nLite CD really does not have setup and autorun files, then copy those from your original CD (USB copy). Try starting the setup.exe and see if you can install the nLite Windows on the new partition. If this does not work, then try it with the original CD. Good luck and please let us know what you learn. Enjoy, John.

Gekkemuis, don't really know what you mean by "NLITE doesnt see anything called Broadcom". NLite does not look for any piece of hardware. The user includes the drivers for the HW present and Windows detects the HW and applies the appropriate HW. When you say the Broadcom NICs are not detected, this is a Windows/HW issue not an nLite issue. Is the adapter enabled in the BIOS? Look at the DMI screen during boot and see if the device shows up there. If it is there, then post the Vendor and Device IDs. The DMI screen is one of the last screens before Windows get control. On my and possibly many machines, if you press the Pause/Break button on the KB, boot will stop so you can read the screen. A space bar will get it going again. Also, please attach (not paste) your Last Session as requested in large bold RED letters above. You should only include 32 bit drivers for a 32 bit system and same for 64 bit. Using the wrong architecture drivers will very likely get you a BSOD. It kind of sounds like you are dealing with many types of systems/cards. I hope this is not a commercial/business environment. The nLite license only allows personal use. Please read it in the nLite folder in the Program Files folder. Enjoy, John.

RT Seven Lite - RC build 1.7.0 and Beta build 2.6.0

ajdee, I am also running W7 x64 with WAIK version 6.1.7600.16385 and I have no problems. Please make sure you are running version 6.1.7600.16385 of WAIK. I just opened WSIM and went to Help-About. Sorry I cannot help. Bensam56 will need to offer some help. Enjoy, John. ajdee, I was wrong in my reply above. If you are running W7, you do not need to have WAIK installed. I assume if it is installed, you should be OK if it is the latest (6.1.7600.16385). I do have WAIK (6.1.7600.16385) installed on my XP x64 system, which I use most, (dism, imagex, wsim) but I run RT7Lite on a W7 partition and do not have WAIK installed. Sorry, but hope you are running now. Enjoy, John. -

Tomorrow, I think I understand your position and would never criticize what you feel is appropriate for you. I think driver signing is an attempt to prevent later changes to the .sys file by a bad guy. I do have modern HW and was surprised that one of my drivers was unsigned. Enjoy, John. -
b-man, you are welcome. Glad you got it working. Enjoy, John.

RT Seven Lite - RC build 1.7.0 and Beta build 2.6.0

azon, I am running RT7Lite under W7, so our results may differ. My temporary folder is here C:\Users\John\AppData\Local\Temp. There is a Documents and Settings folder, but it always yields an Access Denied error if I try to open it. I assume you are running Vista - I have never run it. Does it not do the same thing? If you open a Run Dialog and type %temp%, what path does it generate? Enjoy, John.EDIT: Has any of you tried running Process Explorer to see if some other process has the temp file tied up? -

Raoul90, it is saying that you DLed the the 32 bit version of RT7Lite and are trying to install on a 64 bit system. Go back to the RT7Lite site and DL the 64 bit version. The versions have been separated into four, for Vista, W7, 32 and 64 bit. Enjoy, John. -
RT Seven Lite - RC build 1.7.0 and Beta build 2.6.0
johnhc replied to bensam56's topic in Unattended Windows 7/Server 2008R2
I notice that all the posters having this error are trying to access 'Documents and Settings' path. Either RT7Lite is doing this on its own, or possibly the posters have changed some path to include the 'Documents and Settings' path which is going to end in a Access Denied error (true in W7 and I assume in Vista also). If you will navigate to this path, and double click the 'Documents and Settings' folder your will see this. If you have changed the path to the temporary directory to include 'Documents and Settings', for example this would be the result. The error text would imply that RT7Lite is saving a log file. Possibly RT7Lite is referencing this path and therefore it must be corrected there. Enjoy, John. -

Doesn't my crashdump answer most of those questions? Using Win7 x64 with matching WAIK. noob2k3, I guess I would not have asked if I thought so. It looks like several have this problem (I do not) and probably only bensam56 can respond to the problem. Enjoy, John.
