WPI starts but clock does not.
johnhc replied to johnhc's topic in Windows Post-Install Wizard (WPI)
myselfidem, thanks. Here are mine and I should have said when I simply start WPI, the timer is running. Enjoy, John. // General tab NumCols=3; // --- Timer=true; Seconds=30; StartBeepAtSecs=28; // --- EDIT: Just completed an install on my hardware and it does the same thing. WPI starts but the clock is not running. -
I have been doing some testing of my W7 unattended install and WPI (8.1.0). I am running W7 x64 Ultimate under VMware Player. When I use a small ISO with minimal installations, WPI clock starts fine and install completes normally. When I use my full blown Unattended install, WPI starts but the timer never starts. I start WPI by running a SetUpComplete.cmd file that copies another command file to the Startup folder which calls WPI.exe. Since I am running under VM with an ISO it looks like I am running from a CD/DVD. If I start it manually, all is fine. Thanks, John.

sbj, Welcome. We need to see your Last Session.ini as requested in the BIG BOLD RED LETTERS above; please attach it. Did you include a call to your .bat file in the Unattended Task RunOnce tab? Take a look if not. Enjoy, John.

david.lynch, with so little information it is almost impossible to offer help. What are you doing? Are you running nLite? if so, please attach your Last Session. How are you burning your DVD? If you are using nLite, try the alternate ISO Engine(Mkisofs) in the pull down down menu or go to a another program such as ImgBurn (what I use for a large image - about 5 GB). Too much information is much better than too little. Enjoy, John.

djpatch, this also. Enjoy, John.

MagicAndre1981, thanks for your reply. EnablePrefetcher and EnableSuperfetch are both set to 3. BootFilesOptimized is set to 1 and LayoutFilePath points to my Prefetch folder. All of the settings are default because I have not intentionally modified any of them. Thanks, John.
-
I have W7 Ultimate x64 installed on my HW via an unattended install with a number of tweaks, I looked at the Prefetch folder and saw no .pf files and no layout.ini file. I looked at my tweaks and saw that I had not copied my XP Registry tweaks over properly. I tried to correct the Registry but Prefetch did not start working. I then did a un-tweaked install on a VM under VMware Player. Looking shortly after the install, there were many .pf files and a large layout.ini file (about 730 kB). Later when I looked, there were no .pf files but the layout.ini file was still there but unchanged. After four more days and many starts and restarts, there remains no .pf files and the layout.ini file remains unchanged. Please let me know what is going on and/or what I need to do to get the Prefetch function working. Thanks, John.

996, t I think it should look like this: "C:\program files\VMware\VMware Workstation\VMware.exe" -x "C:\VM\Windows 7\Windows 7.vmx"Enjoy, John.

Wordsmith, if the original CD is altered by some other SW (or nLite), then all bets are off and there may be no light for your installation using nLite. You may try just installing from the CD. As requested before, please attach your Last Session.ini and tell us exactly what has been done to your CD before. Also give us more information about your error. Enjoy, John.
-
asadraza5, what do you mean by the unattended file? Many files are created/altered when running nLite. If you are talking about the Last Session.ini file, it is stored in your source folder (unless you select the option to suppress) and is always stored in the Preset folder in the nLite folder of the Program Files folder. Enjoy, John.
-
Wordsmith, welcome. The program did exactly what you told it to do. Please attach your Last Session.ini as requested in bold RED letters above. When you get to the Create a Bootable ISO screen, do not just click Next, but select what you want to do from the pull down menu. When the ISO/Disk is created, then click Next. Please remember to always start with a fresh copy of your CD files/folders and run nLite only once. BTW, your mistake is a common one. Enjoy, John.

ebyrd10000, welcome. You can add all post SP3 updates and should use an AddOn (available at RyanVM forum). There are IE8 AddOns available here and Media Player 11 (why are you asking about 10?) can be added using Booogy's WMP11 Slipstreamer. Please do some searching for these. You should always start with a fresh copy of your CD files/folders, so you will need to re-add everything, including drivers. You can use the Last Session.ini from your first build. Please attach it the next time you have a question. Enjoy, John.

guinea, I actually tried it under VM once but it failed with bad file messages. I have several modified Windows files (.dll, .exe) and I do my install with SFC (System File Checker) disabled. I assume the errors were from these modified files and let it go at that. This is one reason I had asked to see your Last Session.ini. I am glad to read that -X- has tried with success. Enjoy, John.

dumble, here's mine: CRC32: 9008BC2A MD5: 1E73B24A89ECEAB9D50585B92DB5482F SHA-1: 793F4CC4741EBAD223938BE0EEEE708EDA968DAA Size : 1.66 GB (1,789,542,400 bytes) I am not sure we have the same version (could find no version information) but mine works fine and I DLed one the other day to see if it had been updated and the hashes were the same as these (see here). Enjoy, John..

guinea, good question and I would like to know the answer. You did not attach your Last Session.ini, so we cannot look at it (please do attach it). I would suggest you give it a try, but backup your running system if you can. It may work or not, just be especially careful what partition you select to install XP. If you get an error, please post a screen shot and we will look into it. Have you tested your nLite build data? I recommend you test it on a virtual system first. VMware Player, VirtualPC and VirtualBox are all free. BTW, I install W7 from my XP partition (called flat install) since I mostly run W7. Enjoy, John.

airbon, sounds like to me that your are running nLite more than once against the same source. This can lead to serious and strange results including yours. You should always start with a fresh copy of your CD file/folders and run nLite only once. NLite does not remember user names and you should not be getting old ones in your installation. The user accounts are created in nLite.inf (compressed into NLITE.IN_). If you have any further questions, please attach your Last Session.ini. Enjoy, john.

throbert, where do you see the $OEM$ folder in Kurt_Aust's stuff? I use his procedure and see nothing in my $OEM$ folder that looks like it came from Kurt_Aust. The folder is created by nLite to do some work during XP installation. I have also added some file/folders to mine. Are you running nLite? If so, please attach your Last Session.ini. Enjoy, John.

Followup: I have been using Agent Ransack for some time now and am very pleased with it. I was looking for some text a program was using in a menu and suspected it was in some file in the program's folder. I used Agent Ransack to search the folder for the string and found it quickly. It was in a .dll file in Unicode. Both conditions surprised me. One thing I have discovered about the search in W7 is it does a great job of finding empty files (0 bytes). Use size:empty and quickly all empty files are found. Agent Ransack cannot seem to find empty files and reports all folders as empty files. Enjoy, John.

Sp0iLedBrAt, I am not sure what you are asking here, but please take a look at Kurt_Aust's x64 tutorial. In his batch file a number of updates are executed silently (actuall passively). I use his process and often have rebuilt my ISO with out running nLite. I just add the updates and code to the batch file and create an ISO. Enjoy, John.

Slipstream W7 Sp1 RC - Dism ?
johnhc replied to zakspeed's topic in Unattended Windows 7/Server 2008R2
I do not know what I really tried but the .cab file created by TUGZip does not integrate in DISM (missing file). When I extracted the .cab it contained fewer files and folders than the original. I tried to find another free .cab generator, but failed. ZipGenius also leaves out several files and folders. A simple test case I generated failed to place anything in the .cab file. Inquires to them and a post on the forum has failed to even get a reply. Other free SW crashed or failed other ways. My last try was with a free version of a Pro archiver. It created a .cab file that contained all the files and folders and exactly the same byte count. DISM failed with a strange error code but the log file revealed a hash code miss compare. And surely, for at least this one, the file from the .cab had two bytes different than the original. So, as of now I know of no way to create a .cab file of the SP1 folder (about 1.8 GB). I am continuing to pursue this and will report back if I discover something interesting. Enjoy, John. -
wesireal, to include SP3, DL it and save it to a folder. Select the Service Pack Integration task, as you have, and when it comes up, point to the SP3 file in your folder. Enjoy, John. EDIT: You don't need SP2.
-
wesireal, I went to this ACER site and followed it down to your drivers, DLing the Chipset ones. I extracted it and found only two .inf file, CX_31993.inf and SMBUSati.inf. I would suggest you start with these two and see if you can get up and running. The others you can run after install or extract them and include the .inf file in nLite. Please remember always to start with a fresh copy of your files/folders and run nLite only once doing all your work. As Sp0iLedBrAt commented, you did not include SP3 and should. You can get it from the MS DL Center. There is also available Update Packs for all post SP3 updates. I suggest you look into one of these. Also consider using Fully Automated for your Unattended Mode. Enjoy, John.

Media Center failing to install on nlite'd Windows MCE 2005
johnhc replied to fivegorillas's topic in nLite
fivegorillas, you have taken out too much. I recommend that you do not remove Administrator VB scripts. Also do not remove OOBE or you cannot activate your system. "Launch folder windows in a separate process" exposes a Windows bug and should be removed. There are posts here describing the problem if you are interested. Always start with a fresh copy of your CD files/folders and run nLite only once doing all your work. If your next test is unsuccessful, then I recommend you remove all your removals/tweaks and see if that works. Leave you driver and Unattended section. I also recommend you use a virtual system for testing. VMware Player, VirtualPC and VirtualBox are all free. BTW, how was SP3 integrated - after purchase of the CD, how? Enjoy, John. -
wesireal, welcome, but this belongs in the nLite sub-forum. Please post there and ask a moderator to remove this. If you will post your Last Session.ini and tell us more about your PC, we will look at the drivers for you and see if we can help. Enjoy, John.

kleppamaki, how did you copy your CD? Did you do it manually or use nLite? If you did not use nLite, try that - click Browse and go to your CD. Please look in your System Log, right click My Computer-Manage-System Log, and look for any CDPROM errors. Also look at your CD for any smudges, scratches, etc and clean it. Enjoy, John. EDIT: We may be working on the wrong error. Please open SETUPP.INI (found in your I386 folder) in notepad and tell us what the Pid value is. Did the message really say 'The Product Id you entered is not valid' or KEY? Are you sure your are using the key that belongs with the CD? Sounds like you are using an OEM key with a retail CD or vice-versus.
