BigDaddy, I cannot say if your MemTest will fail. I suppose if it really is a memory problem perhaps only MemTest will find it. I do think the others could also. I think there is a version of MemTest that runs under Windows (never used it). It cannot test all of memory, of course, due to the presence of Windows. Please be sure to try Prime95. It was the one that exposed a HW problem on my XP x64 machine. Is there a chance that the machine is dirty inside? I have seen (and heard) machines that were full of dust and cat hair - burned up the CPU. Some BIOS codes will show various temperatures in the machine. If someone could look, it might prove useful. Did you run HyprPi against all four cores at the same time? Good luck, John.

Slipstream W7 Sp1 RC - Dism ?
johnhc replied to zakspeed's topic in Unattended Windows 7/Server 2008R2
After this process, I ended up with a folder of about 1.76 GB (I run x64 version of W7). To reduce the size I converted it into a .cab file of about 543 MB. I used TugZip for this but also tried IZArc. IZARC did not seem to want to fnish and when I ran DISM against the .cab file, it failed with a missing file error. The TugZip file worked fine and installed on my VMware Player system. If you are interesting in keeping a smaller SP1RC, this is an option to consider. BTW, if anyone has a cabinet creating utility to recommend, I would be interested. Enjoy, John. -
RT Seven Lite - RC build 1.7.0 and Beta build 2.6.0

loki9, please see this thread and the linked thread. Enjoy, John. -
dimfas, typically torrent files are Warez (see forum rules) and contain all kinds of bad stuff. We cannot discuss Warez here. You must have a valid and legal copy of Windows with a valid and legal key to participate in these forums. Please get a legimate copy of Windows and then we may be able to help you. Enjoy, John.

dimfas, your symptoms are almost identical to ones I saw when I ran nLite against a already processed source. Are you sure the ISO has not been processed before by any program? Where did you get the ISO? Looking at your Last Session, I see nothing obvious except the disabled Services. Have you tried enabling all these to see if any of your symptoms go away? Why have you included no drivers or Updates? Enjoy, John.
-
dimfas, you don't seem to be asking for help and without a Last Session.ini file, I can offer little, anyway. But, it sounds like you have run nLite more than once against the same source, which is a no-no and often leads to many and varied strange symptoms. I run XP x64 and have no such problems. Enjoy, John. EDIT: Ponch, you beat me to the punch and hit it on the nail!

BigDaddy, cluberti has nailed the problem, I think. Are you over clocking your CPU, Memory, etc? Are you trying to run the 4th core of your X3? I think cluberti misread your dump for CPU speed. It is 3.013 GHz, not 3.13 GHz, so maybe that is just the accuracy of the clocks/clock measuring systems. There are several good things to run for testing, if you are not familiar. I run HyperPi (multiple copies of SuperPi), Prime95, MemTest86 and OCCT. If errors occur on any of these, then you need to determine the source, not ignore them. All the programs are free and can be found via a search. Enjoy, John.

BigDaddy, I cannot help with your minidumps but there are several here who can. It would be very useful to have more information. What version of W7 are you running, have you done an Unattended install (removed components...etc)? What is your update level and do you have a Service Pack installed? What is the BSOD code. If you computer reboots without giving you time to see the code, please go to Computer-Properties-Advanced System Settings-Startup and Recovery-Settings and uncheck Automatically Restart. Enjoy, John.

Slipstream W7 Sp1 RC - Dism ?
johnhc replied to zakspeed's topic in Unattended Windows 7/Server 2008R2
MagicAndre1981, thanks for your reply. When SP1 Beta was installed, it did show in Installed Updates. I removed it and installed SP1 RC and now I do not see it at all. In the link I provided above, it is indicated that if Disk Cleanup Wizard was run that the files necessary to remove SP1 RC may have been removed. I have not run Disk Cleanup, but have run MyDefrag. I may try to remove SP1 RC at the Command Prompt before I reinstall my system. Enjoy, John. EDIT: Followed all the instructions - can't think of anything I did not do correctly. -
cannie, thanks but FreeCommander looks more like a replacement for Windows Explorer and I am only looking for a fast and effective search utility. Enjoy, John.

Thanks, -X-. I DLed and installed agentransack and it looks good. One strange thing about this folder is it contains 490 0 byte items and 2710 other. agentransack found all the 0 byte files and confirmed my suspicions. Thanks, John.

Tripredacus and vinifera, thanks much for your replies. The Dir search via Command Prompt is indeed fast but not as easy to use as a GUI driven utility (like PDFind). I DLed UltraSearch and played a little, but I could not quickly see how to search a single folder. I need to do some more playing. Thanks to both. And vinifera, I am grateful for all suggestions and open to try things. We all seem to denigrate MS but I can't help but believe that there are some really smart people there and I am afraid that I am missing a really good search engine in the W7 built-in function. I willl continue to look. Thanks again to both. Enjoy, John.

vinifera, thanks for your reply. I expected to get responses that suggested such and may well have to do just that, but I am hoping someone will be able to point me to some good information. Enjoy, John.

Does anyone understand Windows 7 search - certainly not I? I cannot get consistent results for it. In fact, I cannot even tell when it is through searching. Where can I find a really good tutorial/guide to it? What are the key words (name: content: type: kind: etc)? What do they do and not do? I have a folder containing about 100,000 items and I want to search for any file/folder name in it containing "en-us" without the quotes, of course. If I use PDfind (from maxXPsoft) it takes about 5-10 seconds and finds 3200 items. Using XP x64 from another partition, the built in search takes a little longer than PDfind but also finds 3200 items. Using name:en-us in W7 finds various numbers of items (around 900, maybe more if I sit for awhile). I noticed that there were no .manifest files include in the W7 results, so I went into Indexing Options - Advanced - File Types and changed .manifest to "Index file properties and content". Quickly after this took effect, my search suddenly showed 3200 items. But, when I reopened the folder and repeated the search from scratch, it was going so slowly, that I gave up when it was up to only about 100 items. When I had the 3200 result from W7, I copied all 3200 items into a folder. I had done this also for the 3200 items from the PDfind search. The properties for these two folders are identical and I expect the 3200 items are identical. Windows 7 search is one of the most frustrating experiences I have had with computers but I suspect hidden under all this is a truly classy, fast and attractive search function. I just don't have a clue how to use it properly. I would very much appreciate any comments/help. Thanks much and enjoy, John.

cluberti, thanks. I have concluded that IE9 should not be injected. It comes from MS in a form that is not amenable to injection and we are cheating my fooling around with the .exe file. I am beginning to worry that the same applies to SP1. MS may have a really good reason why it should not be injected but they are not inclined to tell us. By messing with it we are possibly asking for trouble. As far as IE9 is concerned, I suspect that I have not really given it a fair trial, but I am using Chrome now and have found no faults that would get me back to IE at this time. I will quit injecting IE9 and possibly try it again when it is RTM, but inject it only if MS makes it possible. Thanks for all your comments. I continue to learn much hanging around here. Enjoy, John.

Slipstream W7 Sp1 RC - Dism ?
johnhc replied to zakspeed's topic in Unattended Windows 7/Server 2008R2
MagicAndre1981, I also do not see SP1 RC as installed (VM). I had installed SP1 Beta (directly) on my HW running W7 Ultimate x64, removed it and installed (again directly) SP1 RC and I do not see it listed as installed. Are you sure it should be? If so, what needs to be done to have it show up? Perhaps you can use this in a command prompt: wusa.exe /uninstall /kb:976932Please see this. Thanks, John. EDIT:I tried the command line to remove SP1 RC and it failed: -
Slipstream W7 Sp1 RC - Dism ?
johnhc replied to zakspeed's topic in Unattended Windows 7/Server 2008R2
I just installed my ISO on VMware Player (W7 Ult x64) using the guide I pointed to above and seem to have a running system. The Properties screen shows Service Pack 1, v.721. I need to do some more testing, but so far, so good. Enjoy, John. EDIT: I checked for updates and was only offered one for Windows Defender. This seems strange. Comments? -
Slipstream W7 Sp1 RC - Dism ?
johnhc replied to zakspeed's topic in Unattended Windows 7/Server 2008R2
grabben, thanks, but the reason I was asking is because that one has 39 pages. Right now I am in the middle of trying the process from the one I posted. Thanks, John. -
Slipstream W7 Sp1 RC - Dism ?
johnhc replied to zakspeed's topic in Unattended Windows 7/Server 2008R2
zakspeed, looking at the MDL Forum (reference by grabben, above), I found this guide in post #36. I am very interested in integrating SP1 into W7. This guide looks complicated and error prone. I will look some more before giving it it a try. You can also use RT7Lite - see forum above. Enjoy, John. EDIT: grabben, please give us a link to the other thread (or threads) on the MDL Forum for integrating SP1. Thanks. -
cluberti, I have none of these updates. I did a Get-Packages and looked at Windows Update on my running system. Not only do I not have any, I am not being offered any of these. I guess I am not sure how I am supposed to even know about them except through you. I am also curious how you know about them. Thanks, John.

OK, I have tracked down my delay problem! I did some more searching and testing and found that many people have this symptom. Most blame it on some device such as HDD or USB device being connected during install. I tried installing on VMware Player with the USB controller removed and had the same delay. Since each occurrence of the delay had a reference to IE9 (see my last post), I started with a fresh virgin copy of install.wim, built an ISO and installed (again VM) and no delay. What took 15 minutes before now takes less than one minute! I looked for an IE9 log but found none (W7 search stinks!). There is no IE9_Main.log in the Windows directory. IE9 was injected using DISM, but it seems there is some work done during install, or at least, some time wasted. Since IE9 Beta is so buggy and Chrome is some better, I will stick with Chrome for now. I would enjoy getting any comments on my observations. Thanks, John.

maxXPsoft, I did not follow your advice exactly, but have looked at the log (setupact.log) at your prompting and see these kinds of things: I ran this install on VM and disabled both VMware Player Connections before the install started to make sure it was not the Internet. In this on example, I have lost 6 minutes and there are more times when 2 minutes go by with nothing happening. I need to look some more at the logs but hope you are someone will recognize what is going and let me know. Thanks, John.

-X-, I am sure they are OK if you built them, but I did not know their origin. Since the OP has a general problem, there is something basic going on. I would suggest that all AddOns and all updates be removed, an Update Pack be used for all post SP3 and a test to see if the performance problems disappeared. Enjoy, John.
