  1. Just FYI, there's not just www.realvnc.com either... Ultra VNC TridiaVNC And a host of others...you can google "VNC" to find them I've used realVNC and TridiaVNC, and found both of them to be feature rich, but if there's a specific thing you're looking for, you may be able to find a VNC that supports it.
  2. I'll post another reply when I have something to back this up but... Last I heard, CRT is better simply because it can react faster than LCD. There's something called the "Pixel response time" with LCDs that makes it so that images can't change as quickly as they can in a CRT. This is because (and again, going just on what I remember) there is a slight delay when an LCD refreshes its pixels, while in the CRT, they are only defined by the speed of the electron gun. As an example, if you have a CRT, when you close a window, there is no window there anymore (unless it freezes... ). I'm on an LCD right now, and if I close a window, there's a ghost of that window that remains for a fraction of a second after. In games this could translate to imposing a maximum framerate, which as we all know would be BAD.
  3. Welcome from a fellow School-Tech-Team-Type-Guy!
  4. How about the satisfaction of having something you did actually work the way you wanted to? [Off Topic] BTW Tim, your name reminds me of Tim in Monty Python and the Holy Grail: "Friends call me....Tim?" [/Off Topic] All my friends like the ones I made for them too...
  5. I dunno why, but I just feel..cleaner..if I do an install from an unattended CD, as opposed to an image...
  6. Some of us do it for the challenge (not me, do you see my title over there on the left?) Me->Some do it because they need one for work and M$ just doesn't do a good job of documenting all the goodies that Aaron and Co. have provided to us, and they certainly don't achieve anywhere near the simplicity and clairity we get there either. Me->And some of us do it because we're lazy, or we reformat our machine constantly (for me: "****, something doesn't work and I can't figure it out"->the solution: "Reformat and Reinstall, because I can't get to MSFN at the moment to ask why!--that's what the 120 gig harddrive is for: backup!")
  7. And me! They generally "run" at 60-85hz, but refresh rate doesn't make any difference on an LCD...it's pixel response time there, which is a hardware feature. It's interesting you should say that...because this LCD monitor that I'm on at work has a native resolution of 1280x1024... Sure, you'll get some stretching depending on the monitor, but then no monitor is perfectly 4:3 either. Me, I think they should have gone with the golden ratio, or roughly .618 ...lol
  8. All I use in my house is XP, 4 comps. All this talk of boot up speeds...on my computer, it's 22 seconds from cold boot to full windows "functionality." So I did a little comparison... On a DOS machine: So I have that beat...and it's DOS...On something so old I wasn't born when it was created... Holy Crap! and on yet another ROS (Really old system) Is this even possible?? So despite the fact that my XP machine can best the DOS (which I'm proud of) I can't even imagine an OS that boots in 2 seconds, except maybe some TI calculator, and even my TI 89 can't beat the .98 seconds...so there you are Microsoft...a goal. If you can get it down to .98 seconds, then I'll get rid of all my XP machines and upgrade...
  9. It really depends on where you look. The ATI forums say any combination of different things from twice to half of your video ram, to half of your system ram This is what I generally go off of, though upon further research, I discovered the following, which seems to indicate I was wrong...sorry . of course, with 1.5 gigs of ram, who really cares if it's set at 512 anyway...lol
  10. I just wish more people saw it that way...
  11. The AGP aperature size should be twice the texture ram on the vidcard (in this case, 512 or the highest that it can be made to go.) Now I'm just guessing, but if you have an athlon XP 3200+, 2 gigs of ram (think I read that right), and a 9600 with 256 of ddr (i.e. a pro or XT, which one I don't know, 'cause I had an SE...), then you may not be getting enough power to ANY part of your system. I had a some lights and fans and stuff, but before I upgraded from 350 to 500W PS, there really wasn't enough to power my computer. So if you have less than 400W, you may just be underpowered. Kick a** computer though, it's just so sad to see a hoss like that brought to its knees...so I hope you get it up and running as the beast it is.
  12. Oh Man! the "Huh" emoticon looks just like Bush... Sorry...had to say it...
  13. My first exposure to computers was the apple IIe at my elementary school. We didn't get a computer until I was in 6th grade...
  14. OK I was wrong...I guess that was an issue 2 years ago, but it appears to have been fixed... On the realVNC FAQ, (VNC FAQ) if you click on "Is VNC secure", and look at that and the topic below it on firewalls, you should have no trouble at all... Happy...um...remoting
  15. I haven't used it in a long time, but I'm almost positive it does.
  16. My boss said he wanted to set up one of those pringles can antennas from his house to leech internet access from the surrounding citizens... just shows you how few are actually secured...
  17. Wish I had neighbors who shared their internet access I don't think I'd be sad...lol BTW, is full duplex an option for wireless? I don't bother with those settings with my wireless card, (only wired, which is what I use for transferring files and gaming...where the speed really counts) but half duplex would explain 50% right? 'Course, I may be completely off anyway...wireless being so different from wired.
  18. If you're worried about security, though, then you may not want VNC, as it has (or had) some security holes--we dropped it at work in favor of remote desktop for that reason. (As if m$ doesn't have security holes, but that's another thread entirely). On the other hand, Curv Boll is right, VNC is incredibly fast, and I've never had a problem connecting with it.
  19. I wonder how many of us got our computer starts in schools and the like...probably 75% of the boards... Welcome to the club!
  20. ACTUALLY...I should get myself one of the 58x drives and let it destroy some of my coasters...kind of like a computer chipper shredder...
  21. man...I thought I'd burned a lot with three 50 packs and a hundred pack...lol...and I've had more time to do it...lots of coasters, though. EDIT: <does math, realizes gamehead has indeed burnt an almost identical amount...>
  22. Right-ee-o UGLY! But you could just take whatever installation you have right now and open "luna.theme" in %windir%\resources\themes and edit it with notepad to get rid of all of the bliss, and then put that in $oem$\$$\resources\themes and it should replace the original, and apply it whenever someone logs on... Good luck getting rid of that once-beautiful but now-abhorrent wallpaper...
  23. Many thanks, O Gamehead. I just finished a hundred pack so I need some new ones...
  24. Gamehead, what brand of writer/cds do you use?
  25. Yes, the computer accounts are inside the OU that I administer. They may ALSO be in the root domain's user OU, but I'm not sure...I;ll have to check into that. The DNS may well be the problem, so I'll look at that too. Thanks for all the help, and if I figure out how to make this thing work then I'll post the solution as well as many more thanks...
