  1. Maybe do a reverse lookup that's is purposefully wrong. For example: You want to block acess to www.hereisporn.com that has an ip of 192.168.1.1 In your hosts file, list www.hereisporn.com as having an ip of 127.1.1.1 Never tried it myself, but it's just a thought.
  2. have you tried elevating her to the power user group.. gives more freedom in running programs, but still doesn't go as high as admin. The problem is, some programs REQUIRE admin rights because they write to files and folders located in the Windows directory that are protected. Macromedia Dreamweaver MX is one prime example. It HAS to be run as admin to work.
  3. I know when I slipstreamed My OfficeXP, and Office2K3 it recorded the key. When I install from it now, it autofills the key. Here's an article on slipstreaming office: http://www.viperlair.com/articles/soft_gui...exp/index.shtml
  4. The EASIEST way would be to do this from your workstation, assuming you are running win2k or xp. Right click My Computer and select Manage Right click Computer Management (Local), and choose Connect to another Computer...(or Connect to remote registry if you are running win2k) Enter the name of the users workstation Open Local users and Groups Click on Groups, then open Administrators Click [Add], and join the user to the admin group. This will make the user an admin to that machine only.
  5. That's fine, just needed to know what the server os was. Are you doing it from their workstation logged on as them, logged on as you, or from your own workstation?
  6. Try downloading nero and installing the nerodrive for a virtual drive. You don't by chance use NTI cd maker do you? I uninstalled that once and it took out all my optical drives with it. I had to re-install it to get my optical drives back. Have you thought about deleting the enum key in the registry and have it re-discover the hardware? (I have a feeling it still woudln't work) Then there's this: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...kb;EN-US;314060
  7. Try a program called PC Inspector:File Recovery. It is free. http://www.pcinspector.de/file_recovery/uk/download.htm
  8. Count me as 1 at least.. I plan on doing something like this eventually.. maybe sooner if I had a direction to follow..
  9. If you wanted to dualboot with 98 and just reload xp, the only thing needed was to delete the boot.ini from the c: drive. If you wanted to wipe the drive and load just xp, all you needed to do was "Shutdown to ms-dos mode" and format the drive there, i.e. format c: /q/u/s (Which obviously deletes the boot.ini that was placed there by XP) and then boot to the xp cd and install. If you re-install XP, you won't need to do anything to the boot.ini unless you install xp to a different partition than what you currently have.
  10. Very cool... Do you have links to any online documentation you used to make this?
  11. Rename the Administrator account to something you will remember, i.e. admin, Zadmin, god, or whatever floats your boat. Then rename the guest acount to administrator. Since the guest account is disabled by default, anybody trying to "hack" the administrator account will run into a very big dead end.
  12. I am assuming your are a domain admin in this domain. What is the controller os? NT4, Win2K, or Win2K3?
  13. You're welcome. Glad it worked.
  14. edit the boot.ini and remove the entire line reading: multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect The XP installer automatically goes into upgrade mode when it detects a previous OS on the drive, even if you're formatting everything and starting over. It modifies the boot.ini to point to the "old" windows install, even though it's no longer there.
  15. Make sure in your BIOS that the options for USB Keyboard and/or Legacy USB are enabled.
  16. Weird.. Photoshop and IE are not agreeing on what #006699 looks like. To match the blue background in the png, change your bgcolor value to #005D8C and it should match up just right.
  17. you might want to try running sfc to see if you happen to have a new trojan that the AV won't pick up, and it's masquerading as one of the system files.
  18. How do you have xp installed into 256mb of space? My fresh install of xp with nothing added takes up just over a gig's worth of space.
  19. Then check for spyware. Like AaronXP mentioned, run msconfig and uncheck anything you don't know what it is for sure from startup.
  20. Sounds alot like you have a virus, and it's trying to email itself. Are you using outlook or outlook express?
  21. Hate to sound like a jerk... Call DELL. should be under warranty.
  22. Try this: (commands I list that are contained in brackets, [ ] are buttons, italics are what you type.) Start > Run: mmc [OK]File > Add/Remove Snap in... [Add] Scroll down to Group Policy and highlight it. Click [Add] [Finish], [Close], [OK] Expand the tree: Console Root\Local Computer Policy\User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Contol Panel\Display\Desktop Themes The policy settings you need to look at are: Remove Theme Option, Prevent selection of windows and button styles, and Load a specific visual style file or force Windows Classic Click on the explain tab for each setting if you need to know what each policy does and what is the correct setting for you. Hope this helps. IF this machine is part of a Domain, the polices for global and site will override any setting of a local machine. So even if you make the changes to the policy locally, they will still be overridden by the domain settings.
