    BSOD

Hi folks! Been a while.....OK! I have a customer who couldn't get out on the Internet after a storm...he has ADSL for Internet. The first thing I checked was his modem and sure enough one of the lights wasn't working, so we went to our local computer store and bought a new modem. But that wasn't the problem solved...I tried to connect up to the modem but no connection info from ipconfig... I took a look at the back of the computer and no led's working on his inbuilt network ? OK! I find it hard to believe that the storm didn't take out the modem but managed to fry the network? Anyway, I have the computer at home and sure enough the bult in network isn't working....to top this the computer is really sluggish and now thowing BSOD's at me!!! The full BSOD is as follows: 0x0000007E (0X8248371E,0X82C53B20,0X2C5381C) At the moment I have it on mem test one module at a time to see if there is any faults in the memory. I am just wondering if it is worth buying a pci network card with the blue screen problems? Has anyone any thoughts on this for me? bookie32
  2. Hi MrJinje I know where you are going with this....I will mark this thread as solved. BTW I followed this thread I then followed there advice and worked my to my boot sector on the windows dvd and ran the following: bootsect /nt60 SYS /mbr Now it works like a dream again! bookie32
  3. Hi again Like I said - you do not leave a stone unturned and I appreciate you making me a little wiser....must get me one of those chargers...LOL I wonder what others willl make of bootsext.exe Thanks again mate! bookie32
  4. Hi jaclaz How are you mate? Look some threads were quite good in mentioning that you must go to boot directory.... The following länk is the best I found and solve my dilemma.... http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/20864...oot-record.html But logic says that I should have looked on the dvd....!!!! I am going senile....LOL I do appreciate your quick reply and I am sorry the brain cells have been on recharge ....my charger not working....LOL Thanks for your info as usual brilliant! Anyway, all is well with the world again. You liked the bootsext.exe ....LOL bookie32
  5. Hi guys and girls I am going quitely...sorry....very loudly insane here! I installed windows 7 on C: drive and then Ubuntu. I let Ubuntu install grub to mbr and was going to live with that---but my customer would like to see windows controlling boot order....simple I said ....done it least a hundred times before.......nada!! I booted from windows 7 and then chose command prompt for my repair of mbr. I then ran the following code which I have seen on a hundred theads: X:\Sources bootsext.exe /fixmbr I get information thrown at me about different usage of bootect.exe but no repair of mbr? Does anyone have any idea why? I have dualbooted a hundred differnt cominations and never had problems reinstating mbr before. bookie32
  6. Hi guys Look shoot me down if I am in the wrong place...I have a customer who unfortunately had a friends, friend to build him a computer and it is a mess.... I have sorted out all the othe family members computers but have this one remaining and could need some advice... He started his computer today and it went into chkdsk mode and went through 1 and 2 OK but half way through 3 started to try and sort id problems out on the hard drive.... this was something new for me... My customer had left it rolling on the screen until I got there and I then discinnected a couple of other drives to make sure it wasn't them causing the problem....nada The main C drive seems to have some file problems. We could let it run its cycle but before I got there it had been running two hours.... I have now brought it home to try and save his files...the biggest problem is he has used outlook for his mail and hasn't copies on the server.... If I could login to windows..then I could export everthing and then sort out the rest later.... What I need to be able to do now is get into the computer and save the mails as well as general files... I can boot from many differen't media disks which will give me access to his general files but how do I save the e-mails etc. Is there anyone available who can give me some words of wisdom on a weekend... I am going to lend my customer a computer but he has these important e-mails etc. bookie32
  7. Hi guys Thanks for the info... Much appreciated! bookie32
  8. Hi guys and girls Look I am certain this has been done to death....just read so much....more confused than ever. I have recently aquired Windows 7 Ultimate and I must say microsoft seem to have got this right....after Vista fiasco! Can someone give me the heads up on how i build a PE boot with windows 7 for 64 bit? Can't seem to find info on just creating the 64 bit version. OK! I am certain that it is probably the same as before as with 32bit but create 64 bit folders etc. Can someone put me on the right track...please! bookie32
  9. Hi guys Look I am sorry to ask a question about user accounts...haven't had this problem before. Just been helping a friend reinstall Vista Business after a crash and on install we did the usual and created the user account..but without password. I left the computer on update and when I came back it had logged the user out and there were two account icons with the same name? I am on a computer with my girlfriend and we have two accounts and this has never happened to me - but one user and two login account icons with the same name? Is this because we didn't set the user password on adding his account in the first place...and that Vista automatically logs into that account? I looked under user accounts and there is only his account but if he is logged out he has two icons to choose from? Can anyone shed some light on this for me? bookie32
  10. Hi guys I have solved the problem but not through Vista. An Acdsee for Pentax cd was part of the package when we bought the camera and I installed that without a hitch. Now Acdsee sees the camera and helps me through the transfer of photos to the hard drive. I don't really want to say this is solved...not the solution I was looking for...just thought I'd update you on this. Thanks! bookie32
  11. Hi guys I have a Pentax Optio WPI which worked fine on XP, but not on Vista. I have gone the usual route and checked Control Panel and Autoplay. The device list doesn't show anything for this camera? I have checked at Pentax...no help there either! I can go to My Computer and open the camera to get the pics from the camera...just would like the option of doing it from the autoplay menu. Is there anyone who has had success with this type of problem? Thanks as always! bookie32
  12. Hi again.......when you guys get going you pull out all the stops....LOL I am impressed and thank you all for all the info bookie32
  13. Hi guys and girls I always thought that when I got involved in Linux I would say bye bye to Windows.........can't seem to do it. Right in the beginning when Windows7 was put up for testing I downloaded it and tested in VMWare on XP on my Dell Dimension 5000.....which really isn't designed for Vista in any way ....say dell. Well, Windows Vista was sluggish.....only Pentium D 3GHz processor on that computer. But Windows 7 worked like a dream....finding drivers etc no probs...so I installed it for real on own drive. I noticed straight away a marked improvement on quickness and less resource demanding....WOW great!! My girlfriend loves Windows and I have enjoyed my stay here at MSFN.......YES I will be upgrading to Windows 7 or what ever they call it on release. Just heard here in Sweden that the release will be near Christmas? Looking forward to owning my own Windows7....and that is a first for me to say....LOL bookie32
  14. Hi guys, Well, have to say that I am over whelmed by the response to my question. Sorry, for taking so long to reply...been busy...or should I say I am supposed to be on holiday...LOL I would like to thank everyone for such good info and I now understand a little more about the process. I had always wondered about the significance of quick format and full format. Thanks guys!! bookie32
  15. Hi everyone Look this question has probably been asked but can't seem to find a straight answer to it. I have noticed, like many others, that there doesn't seem to be the full format option included when installing Vista? I have seen a thread somewhere (didn't save the link) about diskpart been available on the repair side of Vista. OK that said....is there anyone that can tell me what format is used in the general Vista install and if I choose the diskpart option ...is it better? I know people have a tendency to go for the quick format (time saver) but I like to do the full format and check every sector to make sure there is no crap lurking in the shadows. It would be nice to get some feed back on this ...just to have a better understanding of what processes are being used and not used...if you get my drift bookie32
  16. Hi browney595 thanks it got me worried ....never seen that before. Everything is OK after updates and internet explorer 8. Thanks for dropping by. bookie32
  17. Hi guys and girls look I am starting the thread here but please move it if you think it belongs somewhere else. I have had a probem after an install of Vista Home Premium for a friend...which I have never had before. The computer is set up for dhcp so I don't have to worry about static ip addresses etc. When I click on the internet explorer icon it wants to go to the following link and times out: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=76277 My temporary solution has been to write google in the webbrowser and save it is as actuell. But soon as I start internet explorer again it wants to go to the above link? I am just installing all the updates to see if something can solve this. Has anyone else had this problem and if so what did you do? bookie32
  18. Hi Zxian thanks for the info. I am always interested in new stuff..so I will have a look. Thanks again! bookie52

  23. Hi guys I am back with another little project to try and get up and running. I live in Sweden and my parents in Spain. I will be visiting them at Christmas and would like to set up their computer for remote desktop and be able to control it here in Sweden. I have the possibility of connecting to them via Vista or XP. I would like to test remote desktop here in Sweden before travelling to Spain and forget a setting on their computer.... I have my mother in law local to me and would like to set up her computer as a test to get some experience. She has Vista Ultimate and is behind a D-Link 524 cordless router. I have, as said, Vista Business or XP to choose from and they are on a home network behind Smoothwall as my firewall. I can obvioulsly change my firewall to about anything that is available. I don't mind reading as you know and would like some pointers in the right direction if there is anyone that has the time. Can someone get me going on this....might get it working before I visit my parents at Christmas....LOL bookie32

  25. Hi again, well, I haven't solved this problem but did find many errors on my unattend xml. I have since posting the xml - updated the info and still it doesn't work. So, I think I will call it a day with static ip addresses ....not worth the trouble. Thanks for the help bookie32
