  1. Hi jaclaz You notice I keep blushing a lot...LOL Sorry, I had given you the copy I hadn't changed the 0 for a 1 on. Both BOOT.INI files reflect how you suggest it...so that isn't the problem. Please feel free to take another stab at it before I try other things. Just can't understand why when the files are there it reboots? bookie32
  2. Hi jaclaz just wanted to run something by you before I test some of your stuff, Like I mentioned - I had been messing with my settings and had actually copied the BOOT.INI and ntldr to the C drive. I checked the BOOT.INI for right info and left it as follows: Now as you can see when I boot now it gives me the three choices as before but under Microsoft Windows XP I have the above choice and when I click on that it reboots? I have checked the XP install and my BOOT.INI is the same as in Windows 7. Now the strange thing is if I disable Windows 7 and Linux hard drive in bios it brings up the above choices Windows Standard and Microsoft Windows XP. If I click on that it boots directly into Windows Xp? When I enable the first drive again - it gives me the same thing "reboot"? Am I missing something? Shouldn't the above info tell the Windows 7 bootloader to look on the next drive and boot from it. If you can't think of anything I can try with this - then I will continue with your info. bookie32
  3. Hi jaclaz God! you don't do things by halves do you..LOL Thanks for all the info...lots to read... ...LOL I have been trying different things to see how things work...I seem to work better with the solution and work backwards from that to learn... I will update you on that as soon as I can....regarding all the info on other threads ..bootsplashes etc...I haven't had the time to test stuff yet....trying to do my studies and keep students happy....not easy. Thanks again! bookie32
  4. Hi jaclaz Well, I found the files where I sort of expected to find them and that is on the D drive. Now that I have found them - what do I do with them...LOL bookie56
  5. Hi jaclaz God! now I feel stupid... The links are great and I need to try and digest your info. I don't know where those files are now. I had XP on the C drive and replaced it with Windows 7 and my Dreamlinux and other XP haven't been changed. bookie32
  6. Hi guys Well, I am back with another situation that I would like to solve...LOL I have decided to test Windows 7 beta and have that installed on my Disk0 C partition as shown. The other partitions on that drive are taken up by Dreamlinux one of my Linux favourites. On Disk1 I have D as XP and E just for storage. I have downloade and installed EasyBCD and set it up as far as I can tell to boot Windows 7 - Dreamlinux and Windows XP. I can boot into both Windows 7 and Dreamlinux but not Windows XP. Windows XP comes up with missing NTLDR. I tried to follow the instructions on EasyBCD for this partiicular problem but got no where. Can someone take a look and try and give me some pointers on what I need to do or try? bookie32
  7. Hi submix8c Thanks for stopping by. I have tried to have time to read up on how to add Ubuntu to a Windows 2003 active directory domain. There is a lot of material to wade through. I will post a little later when I have had time to digest it all..LOL bookie32
  8. Hi guys! If I am in the wrong place - then please tell me. I have some students who are working with windows 2003 and they would like to share files from windows to ubuntu and vise versa. I have set up samba and all the settings on ubuntu - which come to mind. Are there things I need to think of when sharing from windows 2003 to linux? I have set up networks at home with windows xp and linux - but not windows server and linux. Is there any difference? I can need some help on this one. Can some one point me in the right direction- please. bookie32
  9. Hi jaclaz WOW!! I don't know what to say.....dumb struck at the moment...LOL You have given me quite some stuff to wade through so it will take me a while...........ZZZZZZZZZZ...LOL. No, seriously, this is great and I appreciate your help on this one. I can't promise when I can update you with information on how I get on....supposed to be studying and I have tons of that to do...help. I will work with your info as soon as I have a mo. God! I wish I had your expertise Thanks very much. I will be in touch. bookie32
  10. Hi guys Everyone has gone Chinese on me...LOL. I do tend to work with Linux a lot - which I have never hidden from the members here...LOL. I do love the fact you can have grub splashes and boot splashes to spice things up. Having a list of bootable distros on a black ground isn't very inspiring but OK what the heck I can live with it...LOL I do love challenges....must be someway to rebuild XP and improve on the lack of colour...LOL Thanks for the help on this bookie32
  11. Hi guys Look...feel a bit of a plonka at the moment I have solved the problem by reading the info supplied by jaclaz It is amazing what you can learn by reading up a bit...LOL I have edited my boot.ini file to the following: Now everything works fine Only one question regarding this particular thread...Is there a way to change the boot menu background? It is a bit boring and could do with being spiced up a little. Thanks again for the help. bookie32
  12. Hi jaclaz thanks for all the info. Look - I have tried all different ways of doing this and find the code a bit daunting. So much to learn...help Could you look at my attachement and give a typical scenario for how to add the linux partition which is on the first drive at 2:C. The other XP is on the second drive as already stated at 4:D I have tried adding them with bootpart and only Dreamlinux works for the 2:C partition. If you can give me the code - I might be able to get my head around this...LOL Appreciate your help on this matter. bookie32
  13. Hi guys I have the following setup at the moment: 2 sata drives. Drive 1 has XP and Dreamlinux. Drive 2 has just XP Now I can boot from drive 1 and via ntldr I have Windows XP and Dreamlinux listed. I tried to add my second drive by using bootpart to edit the ntldr but I still can't boot from that listing?! I know I am probably missing something simple but can't see the wood for the trees at the moment. Is there anyone who has any suggestions? bookie32
  14. Hi Andromeda43 Feeling a bit of a plonka at the moment. Been googling my arse off and was reading a little how to where they mentioned that when you have made your changes like security access rights etc...they can take up to about 15 minutes to register on XP. Even if you run update it doesn't help. BUT.....LOL sure enough after about 15 minutes I could get access from XP to Vista. So, I guess patience is a virtue....LOL Thanks for dropping by though bookie32
  15. Hi guys, I have been trying to share files from Vista to XP and vice versa. I know you have the normal share folders on the c drive and they work fine but I can't seem to create share folder/partition on another drive. I have Vista as my media center and would like to transfer directly from XP to that drive instead of going via the public folder all the time. I have tried to share the partition on Vista and the icon comes up on XP but I can't access it?! I have looked at access rights and have made changes but none seem to help? Can anyone give me a little "how to" on how I can share other folders/partitons giving access rights etc? I would appreciate any help I can get on this problem. Thanks bookie32
  16. Hi everyone Long time no see...LOL hope everyone is OK? I have been setting up file sharing with samba on Debian and Vista. I can see and open my Vista public folder on Debian but can't seem to get access to the folders in the public without sharing them. It gets a bit tedious sharing folders in folders that are in folders. On XP there is no such problems? On Linux you share a folder and allow user access right as you want to under folders etc. Is there a way to share a folder and all under folders without sharing on all levels? I have spent quite a lot of time looking at sharing and user access rights but can't seem to find a solution. bookie32
  17. Hi again, sorry for the delay in replying with an update! I have been a bit busy of late! Well, in this instance I have gone back to my original idea and used 3com boot services with ghost corporate 8. I had so many variables which didn't seem to get me anywhere, so I thought what the hell and sat at school with 3com boot services and had it working in about five minutes.... I know you are laughing but I did enjoy the learning experience and understand the process a little better now. WHAT I DID I had windows server 2003 with service pack 2 already installed. I had a copy of 3com boot services and installed that. I created a boot image with ghost boot wizard choosing the TCP/IP Network Boot Image (uses 3com DynamicAccess Boot Services software to create and image allowing booting from the network without a disk). I chose the PXE Packet Driver from the list and proceeded to next window. There is a choice to use PC-DOS already marked which I chose (you need to add the files from a windows´'95 or ´98 boot disk to use PC-DOS). If you haven't one at home, there are many sites that offer self-extracting windows boot images. The next window gives you the oportunity to add extra parameters - in this instance I chose to continue without adding anything. I chose DHCP in the next but one window and then gave my image a name in the next. Sorry, hope I am not asking you to suck eggs....LOL The boot image is saved to the folder of your choice and that image is used in conjunction with setting up 3com boot services. We have as a general rule - the bios protected on the students computers and automatic boot to PXE or network boot as it is also called. After setting up 3com and using ghostcast server to take an image from the students computers - it was a piece of cake. My friend at the school has a very easy time now when creating /restoring images from the server. He basically boots the client computer and F12 and it automatically looks for the boot image from the server. He doesn't need to have boot cd's now or disable/enable cdrom boot in bios when installing the images. When you have a number of clients it saves quite a lot of time. If anyone wants a more in deapth description including the setting up of 3com boot services, then don't hesitate to ask. bookie32 PS Thankyou very much for all your help on this matter!
  18. Hi IcemanND, thanks for stopping by again I don't know what I was missing but I now have a boot cd that works with both the universal packet driver or the broadcom one. The broadcom one that works is B44$. I need to modify both of them to include my mouse drivers for the compac nx6310 notebook. Not sure about those changes but will do some research. Sorry for being a pain. bookie32
  19. Hi again, well have installed ghost solution suite 2.5 and can create bootable images instead of the disks which is a step in the right direction - but I am still getting the similar boot errors. I have noticed that one can modify the boot template via boot wizard - not sure how I would get the right info there either. So at the moment I am as lost as I was in the beginning. I either need to modify my template when creating the boot image or unpack the bootcat and osboot files to modify them. Anyone got any ideas? bookie32
  20. Hi IcemanND, sorry for my being thick!! Not on top form at the mo....bloody bad cold I will have a look at 2.5 and get back to you. Thanks for your patience bookie32
  21. Hi again, I have looked at the possibility of using a later version of ghost but don't know which one will work with windows 2003? I don't really want to start over and install a later version of windows server just to get the ghost version I want. My test server at home wont run the latest versions!! Are there any more suggestions. bookie32
  22. Hi again, yes I understand what you are saying regarding the creation of the boot cd its just that something isn't going right with the process and I am getting the errors that I pointed out before. What I will look at is using a newer version of ghost on XP or Vista to see the differences in the boot wizards. I will get to that now and update later on how I get on. Thanks again for your help! bookie32
  23. Hi IcemanND, please don't shoot me down...but I am a bit confused now I want to create a network boot image that I can burn to a cdrom. I wasn't aware that ghost 8 could perform that function? I want to replace the two disks that ghost boot wizard creates with an image that I can burn onto a cdrom. This cdrom I can then boot to the server if I need it in the future. I am sorry if I wasn't clear on that. Please tell me if I am losing my marbles....LOL Its just the two disks that seem to be the problem when creating the boot cdrom. I am probably missing the obvious ....so feel free to tell me. boookie32
  24. Hi IcemanND, thanks for the info I haven't really looked to far into a newer version of ghost - but thought that there were not to many versions that work with windows 2003?I will have to do some research. I have read a little and see how one adds several nics to the same boot disk - which as you have pointed out can be made into an image with a later version of ghost. I will have a look at that and update you later. bookie32
  25. Hi Teh_Tech, You are very right in what you say...sorry got carried away. I hope one of the supervisors can move my post Thanks for pointing that out for me. bookie32 PS I am actually using windows 2003 for my server which is the base of creating my ghost images.
