  1. Hi mate I'd sooner not work with Vista either....but for my customers.... Thanks for the info! I will give it a try. bookie32
  2. Hi guys OK! I have been playing around with adding my sp1 and sp2 to Vista and have created the versions I want with these service packs integrated and working... I would like to integrate all the available updates to my new creations with sp1 and sp2 added and wondered what waik I should use? Several versions are out now and I just would like to be certain before trying to integrate all updates etc... bookie32
  3. Hi again OK! I found a basic Vista version without any service packs. I have now created a couple of DVD's with both service packs installed....Home Premium, Home Basic, and I wll create a Business version as well.. I followed the advice here at TechRepublic which worked like a dream... I will in a short while return to the original slipstreaming written by FireGeier to add all the updates to my versions..... bookie32
  4. Hi again! Well, I found the culprit.... It was a Topcom skyr@cer Wireless USB Stick 54Mbps v2....!! I didn't have any reason to suspect it because device manager wasn't showing anything...and the customer had been successfully using it for quite some time before coming to me to clean out the computer... Anyway, I did a repair of the original installation, but that didn't hellp. I thought...what the hell let us try a fresh install.... I removed the USB wireless network card and did a fresh install... Everything looked good until I added the USB with the latest driver and shore enough the screen shutdown...all fans and appliances working.... I suppose something happened to it in transit to me....My customer would like to have wireless, so I am going to suggest a good internal pci card that can be moved to a new computer in the future.. Thanks for all your help on this one! bookie32
  5. Hi guys! Thanks for the info! I will try to look at that today... bookie32
  6. Hi Ponch I am hooked up to my test screen at the moment. I have used a live Ubuntu cd for a couple of hours as allen2 suggested and no problems.. I even checked out the hard drive to make sure it is not showing signs of wear...unreadable segments etc. I then created a new user account in safe mode, but didn't even get chance to login to that when there was a click from the mobo and the screen went blank.... I use this screen all the time and have not seen any problems with it yet.. Just wondering if a reinstall would help? bookie32
  7. Hi allen2 I like your suggestion! Thanks for that.. I will give it a try today. bookie32
  8. Hi -X- Well, it does to me...only not a card but inbuilt graphics.! I tried a card and restarted the computer and came to login and almost the same thing happened..it didn't go black on me, but it was just like a card not installed and a mass of colour on the screen. Of course - I hadn't got as far as adding the drivers, but it was the same problem... bookie32
  9. Hi again I have a Aser Aspire workstation from a customer....The first problem was the psu was vibrating the hell out of her chassis....Changed that, but on login I am getting about a half a minute into desktop and I hear a clicking sound and the screen goes black. All fans etc are still going, but I have a black screen. Even the screen's on light is lit up as working. I tried going into saftey mode and nothing happens?I can be in saftey mode as long as I like without problems. I have never heard such a clicking sound before...could it be the chipset? No drivers or programs have been added recently.... I have tried testing components and everything is OK...... Has anyone any suggestions as to what I can do? (Apart from chucking it over my balcony)... bookie32
  10. Hi Tripredacus Oh dear....LOL Back to the drawing board with that one. Need to find a basic version without sp1 or sp2.....Saving time seems to cost me a lot lately.... Thanks! bookie32
  11. Hi again! I have been looking at adding sp2 to Vista to save me time on customer reinstalls. I have read a lot about the slipstreaming, but if I have understood it right - then you start with a basic install of Vista without any service packs. If that is the case - can one remove sp1 from a version in order to create the basic Vista? bookie32
  12. Hi mate! Thanks.....been one of those plonka days...LOL Great stuff! bookie32
  13. Hi again Just testing Clonezilla at the moment. I have a computer with recovery partition etc..I didn't want to clone that, so the partition I cloned was sda2 with windows Vista Home Edition on it. I then decided to install the image on a new drive and changed the image info saved by clonezilla to reflect that I now am going to install the image on sda1 The cloning and installation went well, but on reboot I have a blinking curser...... I have gone into the harddrive with Ubuntu and Ubuntu can mount the drive and all folders are there..... I have now run repair, but am still getting the blinking curser..... Has anyone any suggestions? Please don't say shoot myself...already thought of that...LOL bookie32
  14. Hi JedMeister ! YES, I agree and I have made the changes. I have been cataloguing my computers and giving them static addresses just to keep tabs on everything. I have a netgear nasduo and that was a bit of a pain when I disabled the DHCP function. It set itself to standard ip address and I was forced to physically attach it to one of my computers and change the static ip of my computer to one in the subrange set as standard by netgear...then I could set a standard ip for it....:LOL. Been on the FOG forum at sourceforge and a guy has showed me that I can update my firmware on my D-Link 825 with DD-WRT firmware. This is getting really interesting...Been a bit put out when I got in contact with D-Link about my router and they didn't have anymore plans for updating firmware to solve problems in Windows 7. There are a lot a bit annoyed about that....!! Now I have the opportunity to make my router more useful....BUT it requires some reading...LOL Thanks again! Much appreciated. bookie32
  15. Hi JedMeister OK! FOG is open source and you can find a little info here Thanks for the suggestion! bookie32
  16. Hi folks OK! I know this isn't a standard windows question...and if there is a better place for it..feel free to move it. I have just installed FOG on a computer that will be included in my home network. This is the layout at the moment: I will be using FOG for taking images of my computers and those that I build for others.....for purely backup purposes... I have a D-Link DIR-825 which up and till now I have had set up as follows. Gateway = 192.168.0.1 and I have the DHCP server enabled to automatically give out ip's to my computers. I also have reserved my personal addresses. The range set has been 192.168.0.100 to 192.168.0.199. I installed FOG on the latest Ubuntu 10.10. No hiccups so far... I checked on my router what address had been allocated to the Fogserver as I have called it and I reserved that one for my server and I manually set the computer for that address as well. OK! What is my problem you are wondering.....I would like to know how to best set up the network with my FOG server? As it is now it doesn't work so well.... I set up a test computer to take an image using fog, but when I looked at the ip address it was under the start range on my router? this led me to believe that DHCP in FOG has allocated the address? I couldn't reserve this address on my router without changing the range. Can someone give me a general set up for a network with a d-link like mine and how I should set up the ip's? I have never been what you can call an expert on network questions and am open to any suggestions....almost any.... My router goes to switches for my system but they are just that switches... I would appreciate any help I can get on this problem.....sure it is me that is the problem.... bookie32
  17. Hi again! Look I am very grateful for all the help, but this thread has been basically solved since I replied to Mr Snrub..... I am sorry for not putting up this is solved and will do that now! bookie32
  18. Using latest bios as written earlier: Windows confirms that I am using 64bit bookie32
  19. Hi MagicAndre1981! Yes. Mr Snrubs "Memory Remap Feature" is enabled and it works.... Sorry, put up wrong pic..... added right one now.. Checked the setting in start manager > advanced and no limit set there. bookie32
  20. Hi Mr Snrub Your info worked a treat....THANKS for that! MagicAndre1981 Thanks for another tool I can use.....Have attached a pic.. Thanks a lot! bookie32
  21. Hi cdob I guess that is a fair question considering what I am asking....LOL. OK! The board supports 8GB DDRII800/667/533 and I am using DDR2 PC-6400 800MHz The motherboard is an AsRock 4Core1333-FullHD With the latest Bios1.70 installed. The chipset Northbridge: ATITM RS600 - Southbridge: ATITM SB600. The processor is a Intel Core 2 Do E6420 2.13GHz Cache 4mb Hope this helps! bookie32
  22. Hi folks! Just upgraded my media center and have installed 6GB ram? I have 2+1+2+1 The memory is Corsair PC6400 800MHZ xms2. The bios sees everything. Even Windows says I have 6GB installed, but I get told that I can only utilise 3.5? OK! What am I missing here? I thought that 64bit could use everything... bookie32
  23. Hi Tripredacus Thanks for dropping by....I have solved this little puzzle but will keep in mind your info if needed in the future. MagicAndre1981 has been helping me with his updated trace.....not forgetting it was cluberti who posted it first...... This is a copy of what I wrote on that thread for those of you looking for a fix....... I will call this thread solved ... bookie32
  24. Hi again! The basic problem is that the "Turn off display" works as it should after my setting 5 minutes (for test purposes) However, the "Put the computer to sleep" just keeps beeping and bouncing right back to desktop...waking up the screen again?! OK! Lots of info for you and let us see where it leads us..... In a previous thread I had problems with the above motherboard and seemed to have resolved the BSOD issue now and it is new stuff..... I have done upteen tests and different settings but can't seem to solve this one... My bios settings for power on this board are as follows: Suspend mode = Auto ACPI 2.0 Support = disabled ACPI APIC Support = enabled APM Configuration: Restore on AC Power Losse = Power Off Power on by RTC Alarm = disabled Power on by External Modems = disabled Power on by PCI Devices = disabled Power on by PCIE Devices= disabled Power on by PS/ 2 Keyboard= disabled Power on by PS/2 Mouse = disabled I have tried several different settings...nada.... OK! Progressing to power options in Windows 7.....help it is a jungle..... I have looked at settings for the balanced plan and have tried several different computations there as well ...nada At the moment I have standard settings apart from "turn off the display" = five minutes and "Put the computer to sleep" = ten minutes Been reading different threads about adding extras in "Change advanced power settings" and have tested adding "allow the computer to sleep" for Multimedia settings and turning off hard disk after 5 minutes etc...nada As pointed out, settings are basically standard at the moment Moving on here.... I have tried both the start>sleep and the settings for balanced plan and then both bring me back to desktop as you would suspect... I have tried running the following command from cmd after such an event....powercfg -lastwake and get the following response: (see attached pic) For those of you that like Linux... What is happening here that Windows 7 is making a hash of? This works and the computer goes into sleep mode.. I just press the power switch and the computer goes back to desktop as I left it... All that being said and done - I have read about usb cordless mice etc being a reason some times... I have my test computers connected to a screen splitter, so that I can work with other computers at the same time....I removed the new computer from that and connected it up to a separate screen, cable mouse, cable keyboard and am getting the same problem.....? OK! What I do know is this....I ran a livecd Ubuntu and set the computer up as follows: (see attached pic) Linux...Ubuntu in this case, doesn't seem to have a problem shutting down my screen and then go into sleep mode? I just press the power on switch and I am back in desktop again where I left off... It would seem the event isn't being recorded? I can add info as needed... Can someone have a look and tell me what is going on here? bookie32
