  1. Hi again , thought I'd start a new thread on ghost boot. I know it has much to do with my other thread http://www.msfn.org/board/setting-up-PXE-o...165#entry794165 - but I wanted to keep the two different issues separate. If the managment feel differently, then please say . Before I bore the pants off you all - please don't forget that I don't mind the leg work. I don't mind getting my feet wet, so feel free to come with suggestions All help is greatfully received!! OK I am trying to help my school with PXE boot the subject of the above thread. The other thing I would like to do is help them recreate the boot cd's incase they need them in the future. The guys at IT haven't created the cd's that they boot up from when ghosting their computers (that person left their employ ). I wanted to pass on your knowledge to them by giving them the chance to create new boot cd's if required at a later date. OK I am trying to eliminate the need for them to put hours of their time on something I hope with your help to solve. The IT guys aren't given the resources or time to do these things. OK enuff said! I copied an image from one of their boot cd's onto the hard drive to have a look at the contents. Their are to files ghost.exe and ghstwalk.exe. I haven't really had the time to look at why the ghstwalk.exe. To basics: when creating a ghost boot cd/disk symantec have made things a little more difficult when creating these things. Laptops don't usually have diskette stations. so one needs the boot cdrom instead. When running the ghost boot wizard I choose "network boot disk" as my option and follow the instructions. BTW their are three client computers in question at the moment - so a multiboot cdrom is preferable. For this exercise I am using my loan computer as the client a Compaq nx6310. The boot wizard gives me the option of "broadcom bcm 4401 ndis2 driver" This is the page for my driver: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechS...p;swEnvOID=1093 Installed on my loan computer is the Broadcom 440x 10/100 integrated controller version 4.3 If I download that version and unpack it there is no NDIS2 drivers but that option appeares when using ghost boot wizard? I can only assume that they have taken it from Broadcom direct? I use MS-DOS to be included in the boot disk and DHCP for IP's on creating the boot disk you are met with the warning that there isn't room on the disk and a second disk is required. On the second disk the GHOST.EXE is installed so that is easily copied to the hard drive and hop over the second disk. I have googled my pants off again trying to find info on how to integrate the two disks to create a boot cdrom. Many of them use a version that seems to have been written by Scott Barker at the following link: http://www.steveit.com/homepage/Articles/G...e_a_ghost_8.htm He gives the details with the screens that show the whole process with boot wizard etc. I have followed his incstructions and haven't as yet been able to make it work My files included: Here is my config file after modification: Here in my autoexe file after modification: When I boot the cd I chose to check the boot row by row and found these errors - " Could not find any device The driver failed to load" and "General failure writing drive A Abort, Retry, Fail? This is the protocol from the NET folder in case you can see something wrong here: This is all a bit baffling for me Can anyone shed some light on what I need to do? bookie32
  2. Hi AO3, thanks for dropping bye Thanks very much for the link it was very expanitory I have been busy the last couple of days - but will look at the link in more detail tomorrow and give you a shout when I have had time to work with the info! Thanks again much appreciated! Much appreciated to both of you bookie32
  3. Hi bj-kaiser, sorry for the misunderstanding! I am not getting anywhere with this anyway I reinstalled as I said but what I hadn't counted on was the windows 2003 version they have has sp2 already included and that means no RIS but WDS!!! I am running out of interest fast here. I have been going round in circles for days now! I will go back to the idea I had in the beginning and run ghost with 3com boot services for PXE. Thanks for your help anyway bookie32
  4. Hi bj-kaiser, thanks for dropping bye again I have read the article to your link and at the moment the thought of upgrading to windows 2008 isn't an option. Thanks for pointing out that for me! Because I am limited to the 2003 version then I will look at pxelinux as an option. I have, however. reprogrammed the computer with just 2003 and not upgraded to R2 and will look at RIS first. At the school they have just 2003 and not the upgrade R2, but I hadn't noticed that before adding the upgrade...LOL Once again, thanks for the info....I will keep you informed of my progress...if there is any progress...LOL bookie32
  5. Hi again, well getting a little swamped with info here and not sure what to do for the best. I was looking at RIS as a PXE boot - but RIS doesn't go together with windows 2003r2 so then I started looking at wds as a solution - but! But being the operative word! If I understand the info I have been reading, wds doesn't do multicast and sure enough after installing and configuring wds there was no sign of multicast as an option We need to deploy to many clients at once, so multicast has been the solution for that. So on my test computers at home I am not sure what to do? I could reinstall windows 2003 without the r2 upgrade and then I could run with the RIS solution? Or am I back to the 3com solution which is where I started? I really am in deep water with the whole setup of creating PXE boot so that we don''t have to have the boot cd's. Please understand that I appreciate all your input - but at the present time am uncertain how to proceed. I haven't even any real understanding of the advantages of having the R2 upgrade? Can anyone help with this so that I can get a test scenario up and running at home before implementing at the school. Sorry if I am asking to be spoon fed on this - its just that I tend to understand it better that way. bookie32
  6. Hi again bj-kaiser, after some more research into using RIS I hit a brick wall of sorts. If I have understood rightly, then if service pack 2 is installed on windows 2003 r2 then it isn't RIS one uses but WDS. Ok I know you mentioned that as well just getting going with RIS to find it not there OK so now I am looking at your new info and WDS. Thanks again for stopping bye I will keep you updated as my research and tests progress. bookie32
  7. Hi bj-kaiser, thanks for the info The guys at IT already use ghost to boot the computers and connect to the server but as I said before that requires a boot cd or disk in every computer. When you are reghosting computers every term and there are about 500 at a time it makes the process a bit tedious. They don't have the time to study PXE and I offered to get it up and running for them. I love a challenge and I really appreciate the help I get from forums like msfn when working on such projects! I don't mind reading either that is part of learning - its just that some times you can google your pants off and not be any the wiser Thanks again for your help on this. The guys at the school are going to be really glad to save time and energy. You will, of course, be given the credit for pointing me in the right direction. They already know that I have posted this thread at msfn. If I have any more queeries about this, then I wil let you know. bookie32
  8. Hi bj-kaiser sorry you were quicker than my little update. I have amost no experience of PXE at all and was surfing the NET and thought that one had to have a third party program to make it work. I have since seen that you can have PXE with RIS. I have seen lots of info on the different ways of using a server to send images to client but nothing that makes it clear about PXE. I would appreciate your giving me a typical scenario regarding making the boot image that you use for PXE. So in answer to your question I have absolutely no need of 3com. It is just my lack of knowledge on the subject that lead me to believe that you needed 3com to make it work. Thanks for getting back to me so quickly bookie32
  9. Just a little update I have nothing against using RIS with PXE - but the same applies with that. I am not so sure of the setup, so if anyone would like to give me the heads up on that I would be greatful bookie32
  10. Hi again I coud do with a little help in setting up network boot (pxe). I am working at a school here in Sweden where we have set up a server for handling the students' computers. We receive the computers with Vista and redo them to XP. At the moment, we use the ghost boot cd when ghosting from the server. Because there are so many computers it makes the process a little long. What we like to do is PXE boot which means the client takes the image directly from the server. Is there anyone that knows the inns and outs of PXE boot - and can give as a little help with this project. If you need more info - then please let me know. bookie32
  11. Hi again, sorry Mr Snrub for not getting back to you sooner - been busy of late. I made a mistake by saying it was wol. I should have said wake on wan. I have checked like you say and yes the info isn't there after about an hour. I have talked to the tech guys that supply our broad band and they say it is a common problem with sending magic packages over the net. I also talked to the tech guys at D-link who confirmed that the info disappears when there is now contact with the network card after a period of time. He said there were third party programs that you could download that could solve this problem for either windows or linux. He wasn't able to give me more info on that. I can, as I said before, wol on my network and wake on wan as long as I do not leave it more than an hour or so to do that. I don't know if you know of some program that is capable of solving this problem for me? bookie32
  12. Hi jaclaz, thanks for coming by. Sorry if you misunderstood what I am trying to do. Sending the magic packets is not the problem, waking the computer is not the problem, but... when I shutdown the computer I can start stop the computer as many times as I like as long as I do it within a certain time. After about an hour the computer will not wake with magic packets - I have to do it manually. I just wondered if there was a setting in bios I have missed. My network card is setup and receiving the magic packets ok it is when the computer has been turned off for a while is the problem. bookie32
  13. Hi again sorry about the silly title...one of those days today...one of those weeks is probably closer to the mark. I am a great Linux fan (don't shoot the messenger) but Linux seems to have problems with certain things. Still not happy with Linux regarding a Media Center......so I have Vista for that. And they don't seem to be able to successfully get wol working with some of the kernels? Sorry, will get down to business. Been trying for some time to get wol working with Linux - but there is always something that comes in the way!! I have reinstalled my XP PRO on a computer I would like to dedicate to a server. I have a little home network including a home server but would like my XP server to be outside of the network and connected to the net via DHCP. Because I want to use wol...I have an account at no-ip to keep track of ip addresses with DHCP. Again because this computer is outside my home network...I have installed no-ip's updater on the XP computer I want to use with wol. I have checked bios and my settings are as follows: ACPI Standby State S1 POS USB wake up from S3/S5 enabled Powermanagement /APM enabled Video Power Down Mode Suspend Hard Disk Power Down Mode suspend Standby Time Out Minute disabled Suspend Time Out Minute disabled Power Button Function suspend Restore on AC / Power Loss Last State Resume On Ring/lan enabled Resume On PME enabled Resume On RTC Alarm disabled I have a d-link 528T gigabyte pci desktop adapter which has a cable connection to my motherboard. The motherboard is an old MSI MS-3609 which by the above and cable connection supports wol. If I trun of the computer, I can wake it again aslong as I do it within about and hour. After that time, I have to manually start it? Is there anyone that can see what I am missing here? Do I need to make any changes in the bios? I am really open for any suggestions that might get me on the right track. Thanks bookie32
  14. Hi again, please don't shoot me down at the first sentence because I am getting old before my time here I have recently gone over to Vista from XP for my girlfriend and because we wanted a media center. I like linux but find it a bit daunting with media centers via linux at the mo. I have been able to establish file transfers via samba between my linux computers and Vista. That part works ok - but (there always is a but ) I can't get access to them via ftp protocol. I know one can do it via Vista - and have tried that I have always been able to connect to them with xp via winscp without problem. Am I missing something in setup...Vista is still new to me and the setup of network doesn't seem to be as straight forward as xp. I have a broadband isp and that goes directly to their router because of telephone on same system. From the broadband router >firewall>Home network. The home network is dividd up into static ip addresses. I can get to my friend in Canada via ftp, so it is an internal problem. The reason for using ftp seems a little faster than samba. Can anyone shed some light on this for me? I might be missing something simple which escapes me at the mo Please feel free to comment, but take it easy on an old timer (haven't got much hair left). bookie32
  15. Thanks for stopping by Nasua, thanks for the info most grateful. I have moved on now and have gone over to Vista Ultimate which is working fine up to a point - but I will start a new thread for that. Thanks again for your help. That file has been saved in case my girlfriend wants to return to XP bookie32
  16. Update I have been fiddling a bit with the settings and noticed that if I try to run media center tv and then the hauppauge it fails unless I reboot? My tv card is obviously not working with media center - but why?'!! bookie32
  17. Hi to everyone, been a while since I was in town. Need some help with my HTPC installation! I have installed XP Media Center 2005 and my drivers for the various hardware. I have a WinTV-PVR-350 tv card which is installed and updated. The tv card is working fine and gives me my tv channels and recording ability. The media center is tuned in and when I start the tv it comes with a "no tuner installed" error!! I have googled my pants off but can't seem to get this sorted! Is there anyone who can shed some light on the matter for me. As always, appreciate any help I can get on this matter. I haven't as yet installed sp3 but when the tv on media center didn't work I added the rollup2 update and general updates. Please don't hesitate to say if there is more info that you require. bookie32 PS Back to me googling!!
  18. Thanks for the link Mercury_22. I will definitely give that a read. Not saying I will understand everything - but one has to start some where doesn't one? Thanks again for all your help bookie32
  19. Hi again, sorry to take so long to get back to you.!! Been a little out of it the last couple of days. Thanks for the info on becoming Administrator. I really was going to read up about it!! Didn't expect you to tell me that as well. Very grateful! Well, I am glad to say that a bootable Dvd was created and it works! I am very impressed with the service here at msfn I would like a little advice on reading matter on Vista, XP etc. I would really like to get into this from the ground level and work my way up. Not saying I will ever get to knowing what you guys do - but I can familiarize myself a little more! I would like to understand the WAIK tool a little better. Perhaps you know of good reading material on that as well? Tried to follow the general instructions and got a bit lost. Are there online books etc? I can't promise that I will be here often, but I know I will have some questions from time to time. Thinking of which - can you make a boot copy of XP in the same way as Vista? Here's a funny thing! I was copying the iso image to another computer with Winscp and all of a sudden it hung itself?! Never done that before. Thanks to the reminder from phkninja about having enough space - I checked my work computer (play computer) and you've guessed it - not enough room! I cleared a little space and restarted Winscp - which resumed transfer! Thanks again for all your help! Think I'm going to enjoy it here bookie32
  20. Hi guys, thanks for the info! I have been a little busy of late - but promise to update you as soon as I get the time to read about how one works as administrator in Vista. I don't want to run the risk of locking myself out - that's if I want to live that is!! Be in touch soon! bookie32
  21. Hi Yzöwl, did say thinking about it! Do a lot of thinking these days! Thanks for your invitation! bookie
  22. Hi again, just a little update to say that I have about 50GB spare on that hard drive, so I think I have enough room! bookie
  23. Hi to everyone at MSFN Just thought I'd say hello. I am an Englishman who fell in love with a Swedish girl while working in the pub trade in and around London 14 years ago! We worked together for two years before finally taking the plunge and moved with her to Sundsvall in Sweden. I grew up as a kid in a military family and lived abroad quite a lot in places like Cyprus and Germany. Fell in love with computers some time back. Mostly involved with Linux but my girlfriend loves Vista! Thinking about hanging around! I am sure that you can teach me a lot about Windows!! bookie32 OOPS! Sorry, didn't mean to post in wrong place!
  24. Hi phkninja, do you know what - as you say that, I am wondering myself if I have over stretched that hard drive. I don't think that is the case because I have a 250 GB hard drive for Windows and I only divided it up into 2 partitions. I will check later today when my girlfriend is about. Thanks for the suggestion! Wouldn't be the first time one has made that mistake!! bookie32
  25. No problems, we all make mistakes !! Still getting an error code although a little different now! Just not going our way is it!! Probably not important? I checked the Vista file for size and it was 4 664 107 512, 1882 files, and 264 directories - which doesn't tally with the above? bookie32
