  1. Hi again! The basic problem is that the "Turn off display" works as it should after my setting 5 minutes (for test purposes) However, the "Put the computer to sleep" just keeps beeping and bouncing right back to desktop...waking up the screen again?! OK! Lots of info for you and let us see where it leads us..... In a previous thread I had problems with the above motherboard and seemed to have resolved the BSOD issue now and it is new stuff..... I have done upteen tests and different settings but can't seem to solve this one... My bios settings for power on this board are as follows: Suspend mode = Auto ACPI 2.0 Support = disabled ACPI APIC Support = enabled APM Configuration: Restore on AC Power Losse = Power Off Power on by RTC Alarm = disabled Power on by External Modems = disabled Power on by PCI Devices = disabled Power on by PCIE Devices= disabled Power on by PS/ 2 Keyboard= disabled Power on by PS/2 Mouse = disabled I have tried several different settings...nada.... OK! Progressing to power options in Windows 7.....help it is a jungle..... I have looked at settings for the balanced plan and have tried several different computations there as well ...nada At the moment I have standard settings apart from "turn off the display" = five minutes and "Put the computer to sleep" = ten minutes Been reading different threads about adding extras in "Change advanced power settings" and have tested adding "allow the computer to sleep" for Multimedia settings and turning off hard disk after 5 minutes etc...nada As pointed out, settings are basically standard at the moment Moving on here.... I have tried both the start>sleep and the settings for balanced plan and then both bring me back to desktop as you would suspect... I have tried running the following command from cmd after such an event....powercfg -lastwake and get the following response: (see attached pic) For those of you that like Linux... What is happening here that Windows 7 is making a hash of? This works and the computer goes into sleep mode.. I just press the power switch and the computer goes back to desktop as I left it... All that being said and done - I have read about usb cordless mice etc being a reason some times... I have my test computers connected to a screen splitter, so that I can work with other computers at the same time....I removed the new computer from that and connected it up to a separate screen, cable mouse, cable keyboard and am getting the same problem.....? OK! What I do know is this....I ran a livecd Ubuntu and set the computer up as follows: (see attached pic) Linux...Ubuntu in this case, doesn't seem to have a problem shutting down my screen and then go into sleep mode? I just press the power on switch and I am back in desktop again where I left off... It would seem the event isn't being recorded? I can add info as needed... Can someone have a look and tell me what is going on here? bookie32
  2. Hi again! There have been some developments regarding the motherboard in question... Never could really establish if it was the motherboard but I have convinced my supplier after endless testing to send me a new one. Since then I have reinstalled windows 7 and updated all the drivers.... No blue screens at all...not even a sign of one...BUT have a problem with the sleep mode settings and wondered if somone can help me out....Starting a new thread about that... "Sleep mode problems with Asus P5KPL-AM EPU" Thanks
  3. Hi Tripredacus! I do apologize been having a bad few days....didn't mean to take it out on you guys and girls Thanks for the info....been getting the runaround from my supplier...spend a fortune with them and suddenly they want me to jump through hoops before I can return anything......!! I have to dismantle the computer and put the motherboard on a test work bench....been busy today sorting out other stuff but will follow their conditions of return and then get back here with the result..... Thanks again for your help! Sorry, nearly forgot....I was testing the memory without finding anything and then I moved one of the modules and didn't get any life out of the computer, so it is looking like a DIMM slot causing me grief.... bookie32
  4. Hi folks! Seen as this thread seems to be very uninteresting.....we will call it closed..... bookie32
  5. Hi Folks! Thought I'd add the minidumps I have had since reinstalling... bookie32
  6. Hi Sp0iLedBrAt! Have to say that this is the first time I have bought a motherboard that is has a newer cd with it than the drivers on their site.....built quite a few for my customers.... Glad that I am not the only one... bookie32
  7. Hi folks.... Forgot some info...it is windows 7 64bit I have installed. Another strange thing....Thoght I'd check Asus for updates for the Bios etc to see if I was missing something.... Turns out that the bios update is the same as the one I have already installed on the motherboad...that was a first for me... The chipset driver and other drivers were older at Asus than the ones on the driver cd that came with the mobo?.... bookie32
  8. Hi folks ! Got a bit of a strange problem...Just built a computer for a customer and after adding drivers and updating windows ....blue screen of death?! OK! Let us start at the beginning...LOL. I have built a computer with an Asus P5KPL-AM EPU. The processor is an Intel LGA 775 2.93GHz E7500. I have built several computers with the same motherboard and same processor without problems...Strange or not strange....when the blue screen came up 0x00000024 (0x00000000001904FB, 0xFFFFF88002ED1A98, 0xFFFFF88002ED1300, 0xFFFFF8800126B91E) ntfs.sys address FFFF8800126B91E base at FFFFF8800125B000 date stamp 4a5bc14f. OK! This seems to be a file problem...so I ran chkdsk and chkdsk full scan to see if anything turned up...nada...BUT I am still getting the blue screens with the same problem? I have never had a ntfs problem like this before that couldn't be fixed. The hard drive isn't coming up faulty?! Has anyone any suggestions as to what I should do? Oh...BTW I have reinstalled twice now to see if there would be any improvement.....nada?!! Need help on this one guys and girls.. bookie32
  9. Hi guys and girls! OKI I know I am likely to get shot down here......been there got the t-shirt...... I have a Swedish version of Vista with sp1 integrated and would like to rebuild it with latest updates and sp2 included. I know there is a ton of stuff here and you guys and girls are great...just that I have so many customers with crashed Vista laptops, broken restore partitions etc.. Just want an updated version with both sp's and most updates to save me time when reinstalling their computers. I don't mind doing the work...just wondered if someone could cut some of the corners for me to save an old fart a bit of time... Any help will, as always, be greatfully received.... bookie32
  10. Hi win2k Freak I hear you and thanks for your input much appreciated! Haven't been able to work with this project for a while...pressure of work...but will get back to it soon. Tripredacus Thanks for your info as well..have looked at your link but still haven't decided which way to go yet...chasing my tail at the moment... bookie32
  11. Hi Tripredacus Thanks for the great info....Yes, it seems that there are many little legal thingys to sort out.....help... I have looked at secure zone and that could be an option. I have written to acronis to get more insight into the licensing side of things....the suppliers here in Sweden are more into the back up and restore side of things and not the restore partition...but we will see what acronis has to say. Going to investigate your link and try and get back to you soon. Thanks a lot for your time...much appreciated! bookie32
  12. Hi Tripredacus Thanks for stopping bye....OK it says Windows 7 OEM Preinstallation Kit for system builders. I can get in contact with them on that score...OK! with the risk of being shot down in flames...... B) Most laptops come with an OEM license. I wonder in that case what manufacturers do..they sell computers with individual OEM licenses and they almost all have system restore partitions...just wondering how they get over that hurdle about activation..do they install windows and activate it before creating the restore partition or is the partition created in the beginning but no files are there until the computer is activated and gone through sysprep and then an image is transferred to the partition for restoring the computer in case of crashes... Sorry, waffling on here...I will look at acronis and see what they have I will also look at the cd's and what microsoft say about that...thanks for that info... I do know that many shops here in sweden offer the repair cd option... Maybe they just transfer a copy of the computer that can restore like the restore partition...must be the same principle involved. Thanks again for your input! bookie32
  13. Hi folks I know I am going to get shot down on this one, but I am not a super programmer like a lot of you guys on this forum and I need spoon feeding (not breast feeding).....LOL! OK! I would like to tackle this from som different perspectives. I am trying to build up my computer support company and utilise stuff that can save me time and money....BUT I don't mind doing the work.... I have two types of customers - my private ones and then the company ones. For my private ones I would like to build into their computers a recovery partition that most companies install now....if possible with the option to burn to CD's from the new installation? I am working mostly with windows 7 now but I get lots of crashed drives on Vista where the recovery partition is dead and I need to replace the drive with a new one. When installing Windows onto a newly built system I have the option of doing what I like with the hard drive and would like to install a hidden recovery partition, so that my customers are given the option of recovering their drive if things go pearshaped. Of course - I would like this in order to increase the building of new computers on a more profecional level. I have access to OEM preinstallation software as I sell computers with OEM licenses, but don't really know how to utilise that for this project. I will be honest and say I get swamped with info and then shut down..... Of course many of my customers wont attempt to recover their computers which leaves me with the task and it would be nice to have the recovery function built in...not expecting to learn this over night...Trying to cover so many options. It would be nice to have the option of recovery without losing personal settings etc. I know that some of this is quite easy to do....always is when you know how. Can someone get me started with this? At the moment I would like to build in the hidden recovery partition for individual customers.Maybe if I have several computers with the same hardware - then I can clone the whole drive including recovery and c? Just need to get started on this if someone wouldn't mind leading me through the process? I will have lots of questions on the way..... bookie32
  14. Hi guys Thanks IcemanND....and for spotting the spelling error...LOL Thanks jaklaz....you are always a wonderful source of info.. bookie32
  15. Hi again! Can someone tell me how to edit title to thread and put "solved"? bookie32
  16. Hi again! Found a solution...a guy had the same problem and can't remember where he found the answer, but it is a default setting that causes the hickup....never did before but that doesn't bother me at the moment.. OK! take a look at his solution.... In Excel > options and then advanced...way down to you come to "General". Just remove DDE and it works fine now! Why it started....no idea? bookie32
  17. Hi again! One other thing...doesn't matter if I create new documents.....can't open them directly by clicking on them after saving and then trying to open the document itself..... So, I guess we can say that this is bonkers.... bookie32
  18. Hi again I checked the event logg...nada... I ran dignostics.....nada Basically I can't open the files directly and have to open Excel first and then everything is OK....really is annoying.. bookie32
  19. Hi dadiehl Thanks for your info.. I will have a look at that and get back to you. bookie32
  20. Hi guys! Need a bit of help! OK! this is strange..I work with excel all the time but suddenly it wont open my files. The error message is in Swedish, but the translation is "An error occurred when the command is sent to the program". I tried moving the files to another computer, but the same problem? This is what I have achieved...I installed open office and there is no problem opening the files. I can actually open excel and go from there to open the files and that also works... Something seems wrong with the address but I can't for the life of me come up with a solution that allows me to open the document directly if using Microsoft Excel. I have run the repair program option but no dice. Going to reinstall the program but seems like it may be a wase of time as well. Has anyone any suggestions? Thanks as always! bookie32
  21. Hi folks! OK! here is the situation...I have a customer with a sick laptop Asus X55Sv with Vista Ultimate on it. The problem is the hard drive is failing and she has no repair cd's. I can see that it is an OEM Vista Ultimate but not if it is 64bit or 32bit.. Is there anyway to check the OEM license to see what it was issued to? Is there a file that will tell me what has been installed on the computer? I can get access via Linux boot cd... If I can find out this info - then I can reinstall and activate her original license.. bookie32
  22. Hi Guys and Girls I have a customer who did something silly and just removed his USB Scan Disk without using the disconnect in windows. I know you can get away with this, but his computer has thrown a wobbly....LOL. I have tried to start the repair, but that just reminds me someone has removed a USB without disconnecting it the right way. I can't get into repair mode and I have tried F8 at start up to try and get into safety mode...nada. Is there a way to repair the damaged driver? He hasn't created any recovery cd's, so that option is out at the moment. Can someone throw some light on how to do this the best way? bookie32
  23. Hi Ponch :hello: Yes, I can reset it and have tried no dice. I even tried to set the mac addresses I want to use...no dice. bookie32
  24. Hi guys and girls OK! this is a long story....once apon atime Seriously, have a customer with a Asus P5B mobo and have tried to connect to a wireless router from Huawei E5. Let me begin from the beginning. The customer bought a little König usb network adapter for the computer to connect to the above router. König sorry about no translation. The router gives out 5 ip addresses...great one would think...At the moment they have a laptop, and printer receiving addresses...no problem. I installed the usb wireless network adapter but no dice? It finds their E5 and I have entered the wpa code but nada? I login to the router from the laptop...and sure enough there is no ip allocated for this computer? I rebooted....everything I could think of but nothing worked...defective usb was my next choice and they bought an internal d-link DWA-547 again..sorry for the language. This card is produced for our market here in Sweden. Anyway, this card produced the same results...nada. Checked all the settings...couldn't find anything wrong. Both computers share same antivirus software ...even turned them off and firewalls ...nada. Even tried to use the E5 filter and list all mac addresses....still no ip address allocated?!! My patience was wearing thin about now so I had a little breakdown... My thoughts turned to Windows XP and has there been some hickup with a file somewhere or is there some setting that is wrong...just can't think of one...this where you guys/girls come in....I hope I have noticed in the device manager a ? for a device but I have checked all available drivers for the mobo and graphics card .....nothing else attached apart from keyboard and mouse with cord....so that is a bit worrying. Thinking of a reinstall at the moment... Has someone got any suggestions for me? bookie32
