Hi guys! Can't start Windows normally or saftey mode: I have tried to run sfc from the PEboot cd to repair a Windows 7 installation. I run diskpart to get the order of the drives. On this Little EeePC there is no Windows system drive... The drives are listed as follows: volume 0 = F cdrom volume 1= D NTFs partition 100GB Volume 2= C FAT32 partition 15GB volume 3= E NTFS partition 117GB So, I have tried: sfc /scannow /offbootdir=d:\ /offwindir=d:\windows and get: Windows Resource Protection Could Not start the repair service...bla, bla, bla Is there a way to start this service from the PEboot cd? If so - what are the commands? Thanks! bookie32

Hi again! OK! I can add the imap .pst file for extra info in case I have old mails that I might have accidentally removed - but not link it to imap current. I see that I can add ForcePSTPath to move the actual location which is nice...my user account is on the E: drive so it is nice to create an IMAP directory there and have a little easier access to imap.... My calendar is in the .pst file that was in Outlook files, so that is sorted. Just have to see if the old memory holds up...lol bookie32

Hi jaclaz! Yes, I understand... But I was under the impression that the .pst file usually is saved in "outlook files" in my documents and you can connect to that .pst when reinstalling etc...thereby reducing the need for a traditional backup. Just need to know if that is the same with .pst imap... bookie32

Hi folks! OK! not sure what I did last time I added my gmail account to Outlook 2010 on Windows 7 I know that the imap directory isn't associated with the "Outlook files" in my documents - but I had two .pst files...one in "my documents" and one in "AppData\local" it might be that I originally added the account as pop3 and then changed my mind and used imap....just can't remember...lol Let me explain...lol I use Outlook calandar and was wondering where those files get saved....in the "AppDator\local" or in "Outlook files" in my documents. I have a lot of info stored in the calandar and don't want to lose it. If all info gets stored in the imap directory "AppData\ - is there a way to add this info prior to starting Outlook for the first time? If I am not making sense please say...wouldn't be the first time...lol bookie32

Hi MagicAndre1981 Yes I hear you...just not easy when products are no longer available and customers need Office.. with Outlook and Home and Business is the cheapest way to get Outlook... Hadn't really had the time to see that Office 2013 was so crappy..... bookie32 -

Hi jaclaz! OK....you gave me lots of depressing Reading... I know I am a bit late in saying what most have already said.....just can't for the life of me understand what Microsoft use for ideas when designing stuff... Do they listen at all to the people that buy their products....or are they basically so stupid that they just go on coming up with stuff based on their ....obviously very limited ideas design department, no actual idea of how it is in the real World.....just get so angry thinking about all the major blunders that basically could be avoided if they weren't so **** arrogant....and just listen to the public... If they had listened to half that was written on this forum before releasing Windows 8 - then they would have saved themselves some very embarrasing sales figures... I appreciate that there are a lot of projects to fix Microsoft blunders....not really an option at the moment for my customer...bit of a whiner at the best of times....lol I do appreciate your time and effort to put me in the Picture... bookie32 -

Hi folks! Background Information: I have a customer who has bought a Samsung Ativ Book 9 Plus via me. We discussed software in the beginning and she needed Outlook, so I suggested Office Home and Business 2013 because Office 2010 wasn't available anymore. If I am honest - I could find an outlet with an Office 2010 - but it meant buying from a company I have had no previous dealings with...so I just recommended Office Home and Business 2013. The Samsung Ativ Book 9 Plus started life with Windows 8.0 but Before I had bought it for my customer it had been upgraded to Windows 8.1. Windows 8 is in my opinion the crapiest version of Windows from Microsoft for a long time...MY OPINION....lol and the Windows update to 8.1 has caused many problems for the hardware in a lot of laptops from different manufacturers.... I digress...lol The Samsung offers a fantastic (3200 x 1800)...My customer works with an external monitor and Samsung recommended several monitors. we chose one that can give a good 1920x1080 on a 24" screen via Micro HDMI to HDMI. My Customer didn't want a huge screen and this one is pretty good in my opinion: SAMSUNG S24C650PL 23,6" WIDE TFT LED BLACK The problem as my customer sees it: My customer has been complaining of poor clarity when using several different programs...but worst of all Office 2013. She has complained bitterly about not being able to get a clear picture despite having the best settings for this new external monitor.... She complains of Word being fuzzy and not as clear as it was on the old computer....I have tried to point out that there are huge design differences and general look of 2013 compared with 2010.... On Office 2010 the font has a nice clear black colour and on Office 2013 it has the dark grey colour....which to some appears fuzzy and not clear and crisp as the Office 2010...I say it is a design aspect of the product..(I think she needs to get glasses)... On Windows 8.1 there are limitations as to what you can change to improve the look of menus, Icons, fonts, etc. Are there Changes that can be made to the backgrounds in Word, Excel, Power point, Outlook that would give the appearance of a clearer crisper font...? Have we some experts here that know the in's and out's of Office 2013 and what can be changed to improve the appearance.....OK...not personally saying I think there is anything wrong with the appearance as it is...just want to give the customer options, so that she thinks it is acceptable. Are there any settings in Windows 8.1 that could help? bookie32

Hi cdob! Sorry, for the late response... Thanks for your information! bookie32

Hi cdob! OK! When adding new SSD drives to mobos problems can occur when set to ahci mode. The mobo is an asus P7P55d and the sata controller responsible for the drives connected is the Matrix one. Can't actually see any info for the rapid storage controller in the manual..., so I guess that sorts out that one. I am sorry to disagree with you - but Windows is hopeless with ahci drivers when installing Windows on a new SSD drive. More often than not you have to set the bios to ide and then activate ahci after installation - then windows doesn't seem to have a problem with the drivers....lol Just in this case it didn't want to work in either ide or ahci mode, so I chose the ahci mode and added the driver via USB during installation. Thanks for your info! bookie32
-
Hi Guys! OK! Like I said sometimes the compatible mode in the bios doesn't work with all ssd's on installation. This SSD is an ultra Plus 12GB. I installed a Samsung SSD on Another computer with the same mobo the other day in compatible mode and then activated ahci afterwards...and that worked fine. In the end - I downloaded the latest intel sata driver from asus and created a usb with that driver. I then loaded it when installing Windows 7 Before adding partitions etc. I am now updating all Windows updates for the system bookie32

Hi guys! A real bug bear that keeps turning up is when adding a new ssd drive to upgrade a computer the Windows installation throws up a blue screen when installing Windows 7. Adding the right drivers via DVD/USB is something I have never found a good "How To" on... The next thing is even when you look at the drivers for your motherboard chipset etc there is a list.... Intel rapid storage, intel matrix storage, jmicron. When unpacked there is so many to choose from...how can I choose the right one when the manufacture lists all of them for my motherboard? OK...most often you can set sata to ide and then activate ahci after installation - but that doesn't Always work...?! Check your hardware is usually the reply to such a problem...but if you have had a fully functioning computer prior to adding a new ssd drive...it is hardly likely to be a hardware problem... When adding drivers on install you can hide drivers not for your computer...that doesn't Always work either because you are left with a driver that doesn't want to install?! Can someone give me some info on a good "How To" and how one chooses the right drivers when installing Windows 7 etc bookie32

Hi again! OK! Solved it... I created the folders that were missing with their standard attributes and then Went into the registry: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders and changed the names of the folders to the Swedish version and then restarted the computer. After logging in again I changed the names of the folders themselves to the Swedish names and they automatically became the right ones again. Before rebooting I changed back the registry settings again to the standard settings. All is right with the World again. bookie32

Hi guys OK! got a Little problem and would like to rectify it without creating a new user. I created a .Wim file incase of emergencies....lol I didn't realise that the .Wim file was created after I had moved my user profile to Another drive.... This drive isn't working properly and I have backed up the files from it for safe keeping. After reinstalling I was faced with the error for wrong driver for my user.... I have tried resetting "Shell folders" and "user folders" but am missing some of my folders. I have checked the registry settings and Everything looks OK - just not getting my folders back to normal. Are there other regestry settings that affect the default user folders? bookie32

Hi puntoMX! Well, I hear you and I will accept that as the reason - just that I was so careful connecting it several times and under a magnyfying lamp that it is hard to accept that I had connected it wrongly or not fully.... It could be because I am going senile...LOL. Yes, the computer worked well with just the battery after that. I now know to double check, tripple check and you know the rest....lol Thanks for your time! bookie32

Hi guys! Look I had a customer with a new Asus K55VD Windows 8.1 and she shut the lid with a Cable inbetween and cracked the screen. Asus here in Sweden don't have screens to buy but recommend a supplier that sells approved parts to laptops... I ordered the new screen and connected it as some nice instructions showed me online...(don't usually fix screens etc) Anyway, I connected the battery and tested the screen...I briefly had Asus come up on the screen and then it just Went to a light blue vertical lines as shown below... I had explained this problem to the guy from their support and he said it must be a faulty screen...they then wanted to make sure that there was no damage to Cables etc...so I reconnected the old screen to show them that one as well... I assured them that there was no problem with the Cables and was about to ask for a new one when I replaced the new screen again to take a pic when Power was added (Asus logo on screen)...didn't want to risk damaging the computer , so I added the main Power adapter instead of the battery....and it worked?! I have spoken to their support and experts and no one can give me a reason...the only thing I could come up with was maybe the pixels need charging and a batttery can't manage that...? Have we anyone that can give me some info on this...? bookie32

synchronising of files with IMAP to a domain email
bookie32 replied to bookie32's topic in Microsoft Office
Hi Inconceivable! You are so right.....help! I have never looked at the in's and out's of Outlook...I am going to have a chat with the customer tomorrow and have a look at his settings for IMAP under the "sent" menu. Another thing is the constant changes of Office - so I am not really sure what settings are similar in 2007 to 2010. Thanks for your input! bookie32 -
Hi guys! Not sure if I am getting the run around from one.com on this issue...they let me down badly a few years ago ....with lots of lies...not knowing they would be found out....!! I have a customer who needed his computer reinstalling because of crap etc... He has Office 2007 on a Windows 7 Professional computer...Outlook has been set to IMAP to the his domain email at one.com.... Now I usually backup files by creating exports of emails, Contacts etc ...which I did....BUT I didn't notice the size of the .pst...!! Didn't get any errors, so I thought no more about it... I also usually go in the :\Documents and Settings\user\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlookand back up those files for safety sake...but the customer assured me that the files should be on the server because of IMAP... I use IMAP and Outlook 2010 to my gmail account - but I thought IMAP was only a mirror image of what is on the server from Outlook and not the other way around...? I like IMAP because I can access my files from any computer and there is Always a copy left on the server which doesn't happen with pop3... Anyway, are there other settings in Outlook that one can use to make sure what I have on the server is the same as I have in Outlook....? The reason I ask this is that I set his comuter to the .pst file I has backed up - but that isn't a mirror image of what is on one.coms server? Any advice...please! bookie32

Hi Mate! Sorry Little remiss of me to miss this post! OK! I will try that to see if that helps... Thanks! bookie32

Hi guys! We seem to be having a dig at Microsoft....lol can I join in.... I would like to see the day when Microsoft actually listen to those that actually buy it.... I get annoyed to think that companies that want to offer alternatives to computers with their crap preinstalled on them...I know there are those that have Ubuntu etc...thinking of the suppliers that have a blank computer so you can decide what you want.... I have seen several go bust because Microsoft just wants us to use their crap... Don't you just love Microsoft.... bookie32

Hi jaclaz! Well, I changed the DontPrettyPath....but can't say at the moment if it did anything pertaining to this... But...lol...I did change the name "Links" to "LINKS" in 7zip (which BTW is 9.20 for 64bit) and next time I opened favourites with 7zip it was capitals.... So, all's well and ends well....lol Thanks to everyone that helped on this! Much appreciated! bookie32
-
Hi jaclaz! You are so right!!! OK the favourites bar folder is the folder for all your links as shown in pic but in this pic it has the Swedish name of "Fältet Favoriter" which didn't show up in 7zip when I first looked... As you can see my folders are all capitals and the favourites folder for internet explorer, as shown in another pic, is in lowercase.... Now I promise you there was no listing of a folder with lower case the first time I looked, so after looking at your links I renamed it to LINKS...when opened 7zip sure enough there was a folder LINKS albeit in lowercase.... I have since renamed it again to "Fältet Favoriter" to test a theory and sure enough when I open 7zip there is the folder "Fältet Favoriter" - BUT with the name links in lowercase.... So, I can say this is a great solution to my problem even if it is Windows problem.... I will mark this as "Solution" Solved.

Hi again.... OK dragging between two instances of 7zip solves the popup problem....BUT...7zip doesn't see the favourite bar folder...? So, that sort of defeats the object....lol bookie32

Hi guys OK! when I am working on a specific project I tend to save my favourites in my favourite bar with the click > for quickness....I then spend a few minute sorting them to the specific folders I want to save them for future use. I could use the "organise favourites" in the menu favourites - but that window that opens is quite restrictive and hence I open to instances of windows explorer and with a full screen I can quickly determine where I want to move the .url's (in answer to your question jaclaz) I tried to send some files from one window to zip and then drag the zip file but the same warning comes up..... I will add that I moved my user account to another hard drive for safety reasons and ease of reinstall or reinstating an image to the C: drive. I do thank your interest and will continue to look at this....so wont call it solved until some bright spark knows how to stop the popups without compromising the security of the computer..... booke32
