  1. Hi guys I have tried to install WPT on Vista and I get that some Tools can't be installed and there is no listing of WPT at all...How and where do I copy it from Windows 7? Thanks! bookie32
  2. Hi guys! Thanks...but I seem to have found the problem.... I started disconnecting everything connected to the motherboard... I remembered some time back I had a strange BSOD problem and like this one..harddrive ok, memory ok, but not cdrom. the cdrom on this computer is connected via IDE. As soon as I disconnected that I could get into Windows again....really weird... I have only ever had such a problem once before and I only found that by process of elimination... I am installing a new SATA one. Thanks for coming by! bookie32
  3. Hi guys I have a computer customer that is showing the above error code... I have tested the hard drive and memory and not found any problems... I can go into safety mode without any hiccups.... As soon as I try to go into standard Windows I get the blue screen...Always the ...D1 but variations of em008_64.11040.dat... I can't see any direct problems in Device Manager I have even tried to turn off all non Windows Services and then reboot....but still the BSOD.... I am not a wiz att looking at dump files and wondered if I can try anything else before taking that road? Thanks as Always! bookie32
  4. Hi guys! jaclaz Now there is a slip of the keyboard if ever I saw one....lol...I hope you gathered that I meant pensioners...never know with you... dencorso well, I wrote this about Bitdefender and Norton: Saying I solved it was probably the wrong choice of words... If you have followed the thread - you will understand that this computer had already been delivered with all programs, updates and Bitdefender installed and working.... Everything went haywire after the resetting of the computer...some time had gone by since me delivering the computer and resetting it etc....might have been some software updates, windows updates installed by the customer in the mean time....can't really say.. She has had the computer for some time now since I made the decision to change the antivirus software....and hasn't complained once about it.... I don't think there really was anything wrong with Bitdefender...just a coincidence that in this case Norton has worked and not Bitdefender... I will never really know what it was that caused the problem after resetting the computer...just happy to not have her contacting me every five minutes...not happy with this....not happy with that.... I hope that sort of answers your question....can't give anymore info...don't know myself....lol bookie32
  5. Hi guys! sorry again for not replying to this thread earlier....just get so side tracked..that I forget to....lol I really can't remember what I did to fix this one. I do apologise for not making an effort to write what I did after the event...I am trying to improve on that...seem to be still forgetting some... bookie32
  6. Hi guys! Nearly missed this...so sorry....lol I solved the problem although...never really understood why...considering that this computer being reset so many times let me down at different stages of updating. installing software etc... In the end I lost interest in the customer...never had one like it before and hope that I never do again... When there is a missunderstanding I get...not interested in learning, just want things to work.....!! I always create very good how to's with text and pics to explain things to such customers and get "TMI" to much information....What customers don't seem to grasp is if you are to have an open dialogue, so that both parties have an idea where they stand - then both parties have to try... Said this to this particular customer...just got you haven't explained anything so I understand it...and this is a so called engineer we are talking about!!!!!!!!!! 90% of my customers are penisoners and they show more understanding than this one person...all I can say about that...must be a bogus degree..... Anyway, rambling on here... What seemed to solve the problem with here computer was changing from Bitdefender to Norton as an Internet security...the computer didn't crash after that..Bitdefender wanted a chance to fix it and I said under the circumstances....no chance I couldn't take anymore.... This customer now doesn't bother to ring or write...I am sad...because I feel I failed in some way...my girlfriend says no way...she failed to bother...lol bookie32
  7. I thank you guys! I just don't want to recommend anything that comes with a lot of crap...People always ask me what I use and I don't really work with changing formats that often...can never remember.....lol
  8. Hi guys! Does anyone know a reputable program that can recode Music files....flac to wma is just an example. The biggest problem nowadays is so many of these programs that offer such solutions come with so much crap...you need to reinstall your computer...lol Don´t mind paying for something that is good.... bookie32
  9. There is one basic flaw with the thinking here....lol As I have pointed out a few times....Microsoft doesn't have the capacity to listen to those that give sound advice to them.... After all that was said about 8.0 I was supprised to see the release of Windows 8.0 or was I....not really...one thing I have learned over the years...Microsoft has the ideas and they don't come from any outside influences....lol Even their own advisors for ergonomics pointed out that it would be a mistake.... I keep asking the same question over and over..."Who do they actually listen to?! Just as tradition as shown...windows 8.0 was never a candidate for the market Place....but microsoft know that the average buyer doesn't know a thing about computers.....catches them in their web of confusion I have customer after customer coming to me with their Windows 8.0 or 8.1 versions and asking me what I can do with them...my first suggestion is Always to throw them off my balcony.... What annoys me more than anything is the arrogance of microsoft....now we have "refressh" or "reset"...but it still means any crap that was there is still there after restart....and the fact that some say that this is a Quick way of doing a recovery....not in my experience....if a computer is infected - then any recovery from it or its partition recovery is taking a chance. Windows reset is supposed to be Quick....I have tried on several different computers and it takes hours!!! I would rather run the built in recovery from the manufacturer or the dvd's created by the customer in the beginning if they have them. I stand by what I have said here...Windows 8.0 was just like Vista...crap and 8.1 even crappier if there is such a word..... I agree with you guys...classic shell has been great....better than microsofts attempts... bookie32
  10. Hi guys! Sorry, I have fixed this problem in this thread... bookie32
  11. Hi again! In this instance I have XP created in VMware and that has outlook express...I then transferred all the relevant .dbx files to the specific ID folder which resulted in outlook express starting with all my customers files.... These files came from his crashed XP computer... I then installed my own Windows Office 2007 and yes, I used the backup .pst file to connect to with Office 2013. I wasn't aware of any restrictions regarding the .pst file...I was under the impression that the .pst file was supposed to be universal over several versions of Office.... I then created the Outlook-files folder that Outlook creates when started....and left my backup .pst file in that folder.... I then connected to that .pst file on starting Outlook for the first time when adding pop3 information etc... This connecting to an existing .pst file has never worked and I have tried moving it from one Windows 7 to another with the same version of office.... Now, with the risk of offending someone, I can follow instructions as well as any other....just don't see the point of having such a function inbuilt in Outlook if it doesn't work... If the .pst file is to be universal then it shouldn't contain any code that would affect it being moved from computer to computer and version to another version... It is time Microsoft deliver something that works in practice and not just theory.... If you use pop3 - the function for connecting to an existing .pst file is active and not for IMAP for obvious reasons....In the future I am going to ignore that function and create the account I originally wanted...in this IMAP and then add the .pst file as personal folders and transfer everything to the IMAP settings so that it can be mirrored to the server.... In any case, I wont waste anymore time trying to use something that doesn't work..... Thanks for your input guys...nothing personal...just fed up with Microsoft and its promises for this and promises for that... This forum has some really talented guys/girls....I am just a novice compared to you... Just wish Microsoft developers listened to some of the valuable input that is registered here on the forum....they would never have released Windows 8.0 or 8.1 in the first place....and now they are missing out a number and going to Windows 10...where is the logic in that...not going to improve the result.... Sorry, getting off my soap box now....
  12. Hi Ponch! OK! Example...if I start Outlook for the first time and use say joeblogs@.co. as my email and then with pop3 connect to the "backup.pst"...after I have created the account. I see that there is a joeblogs.pst being used and then the "backup.pst" isn't used at all. I have to go in settings and add Another data file (.pst) my b"backup" and then it appears as an extra in Outlook. OK! my fault...I then move all the folders from "backup" to "joeblogs" and then my backup empties....sorry for the mix up... I still don't understand the Point of pointing Outlook to the old .pst when setting up the account if it has no intention of using it? There is no logic to the process at all...
  13. HI guys! I wonder if there is a simple way to move the .dbx files from a crashed computer to a new one and access these files in a newer program? I know one can install Windows Live Mail on XP and that automatically migrates the files for you and you can then export them to a new computer....BUT that is if the computer is working... I have all the files and just wondered if I can move them and give my customer a chance to access them via new software etc... bookie32
  14. Hi Ponch! Here is the How To The new forms of office crete a folder when started called Outlook-files and that is stored in My Documents. I create this file Before opening the newer version of Outlook and copy the original .pst file/files in there, so that when I start the new Outlook it doesn't need to create that folder... As I said...I then choose the old .pst when setting up the new account after starting the new Outlook - but afterwards I see that a new .pst file has been created and the account is set to that one? If I then copy all files to their appopiate folders/directories from the old .pst - then the new one populates and the old one empties... This should not be necessary... bookie32
  15. Hi guys! OK...I am talking about moving the .pst file from one computer to Another in its "Outlook-files" directory. I have followed other "How to's" in the past and they say move/copy the folder to "My documents" before opening Outlook for the first time... I then choose to add the new account and click on the " configure manually" option...I then add the link to the .pst which is in Outlook-files and add server settings etc... After this tests OK I contiue with the account... But when Outlook opens I find it has created a new .pst and is filling up that one from the original....is this just standard procedure? Is it because I have moved the file from one computer to Another? If the answers are yes to my questions - then the "How to's" are crap.... People go to such lengths to create informative "How to's" and they don't work....why? bookie32
  16. Hi guys! This is a nightmare that I wish Microsoft would fix. I go through the process of starting Outlook for the first time and then connecting to an existing .pst file that I want to use. The problem is when Outlook starts it isn't connected to the .pst file I chose during installation but a new one it creates... This has happened so many times now...can't see the Point of having the chance to connect to the old one if Outlook creates a new one every time!!!!!!!!!!!! I then need to Point Outlook to the old one and move all folders when Outlook starts so that I have only one profile... Please...tell me I am not alone trying to make this crap work.... bookie32
  17. Hi jaclaz! Now why do I always get the feeling that you will be around....lol Take care! bookie32
  18. Hi again! OK! Solved this by just having my customer as the administrator and the others as standard accounts. So, even if I move them to the d drive I can protect my customer's files from prying Eyes. I share her folder and choose herself as the person she is sharing with....that way anyone else wanting to gain access will have to remove/ crack her password... I know this isn't a fullproof solution - but for the level of knowledge in her business...no one will work out how to gain access....lol bookie32
  19. Hi guys! OK! this didn't go anywhere... What about password protecting the hard drive? All users would be on the D drive but only the administrator would be able to open the d drive directly....? Can that be done? bookie32
  20. Hi Guys! I have a customer that I have just built a computer for and it has two drives. A SSD 250GB and a WD Green 2TB. This customer wants several user accounts and I recommend moving them to the 2TB drive to give them more space etc. What is the best way to go about adding password protection for these accounts on another drive? Thanks! bookie32
  21. Hi NoelC Yes, I agree.. When I have done the updates I have waited up to a couple of hours to see if there is any life....but nada... I have now run extensive tests on the components and hard drive and nothing actually stands out... I now did a "Refresh" and will follow the exact same procedure as before and we will see where it gives up again... I shall do this 3 to four times if necessary following the exact same procedure... Then I will stick it up Samsung's...........**** if it doesn't work.... Trying to think positively even though it has cost me my time, patience, and lots of money.... bookie32
  22. Hi jaclaz! I agree with you one hundred procent....am running tests at the moment - nothing conclusive just yet...logic says that if they have changed the mobo - then it should be something else.... Like I said...it might have been there all the time...just had no problems whatsoever when installing her software before... Thanks for coming by... bookie32
  23. Hi NoelC! Apart from the fact that the customer has never really answered yes and no questions with Yes or No has been a nightmare...not easy giving support to those you winge but don't even make an effort to answer your questions. It is a sad story of me not noticing that it wasn't me that updated the computer from 8.0 to 8.1 and of course there were lots of posts on the net about how the 8.1 update had caused nightmares for manufacturers...BUT this was straight from the manufacturers with 8.1 already installed. To be quite honest I didn't connect her winging, poor screen dumps, to the actual problem Office 2013 being crap...BUT as I said we compromised her resolution by having an old screen in the beginning with a micro to vga adapter....but that was a waste of time and I had already advised her from the beginning to have a new screen with hdmi... This laptop has a resolution of 3200 x 1800 which is about the best in its class....she didn't want a wide Wide screen and the Samsung screen we bought could give her 1920x1080 via a hdmi cable....no problems... My mistake was to try to reset the computer at all...should have just said that there was nothing wrong with the resolution on the new screen...and even if the design of Office 2013 is crap...that wasn't giving a so called blurry pic....nothing was.... It was just the information about resetting the computer to 8.0 that haunted me....like I said ...if I had noticed it from the beginning, and if the customer had come with the packaging...could have saved myself a lot of grief... I am convinced that something happened when it crashed after trying to reset it for the second time..before giving it to Samsung for the first time....the strange thing is after receiving the computer for the second time - I reset the computer 5 times without a hitch....just think there is a communication problem between hardware and software....got to now try and show that....soI am now going to put the computer on test myself and see what gives.... I made the wrong assumptions based on information from Samsung and on the Internet in general regarding the 8.1 update... I think it is just coincidence that after resetting it the first time it started to go pear shaped...the fault was more than likely there all the time.... Thanks for your comments! bokie32
  24. Hi jaclaz I agree...just not something that I usually need to do on a new computer...of course Samsung in the infinite wisdom might just demand that I test it.... Couldn't even get a comment from head office as to why the repair department hadn't sent the computer back in the protective case that I sent to them....where is the common sense in this equation Well, they have replaced the mobo but nothing has been said about the other components, hard drive, memory, etc... Tomorrow I am going to ring them again...and see what gives...then I will start running tests to see what I can find,,,the hard drive has taken a bit of a pounding now..... Just didn't experience anything at all when installing the same software before....just seemed to go pear shaped after resetting the computer the first time...... It is hard believing it is software related...... After getting it back the first time... 1. I tried just installing the Windows updates and ended up with the bloody ants 2. After the first reset the Windows updates didn't cause a problem - but the Samsung ones did... 3. After the second reset the Windows updates and Samsung updates installed OK and it failed on Offfice 2013 4. After the third reset I installed Office, Windows updates and Samsung updates...no problem...failed after Skype 5. After the fourth reset I installed all of the above and then it failed on Bitdefender 6. After the fifth reset I tried a different order for the above and all worked even Bitdefender....so I turned off the computer for a break and when I tried to restart it again later...you got it...bloody ants.... If I find hard drive problems - I am going to shove this computer where the sun doesn't shine.... bookie32
  25. Hi folks ! I am not a happy Bunny and will tell you the story if anyone has the time to read.... Did some research for a customer and we agreed that a Samsung Ativ Book 9 Plus... would fulfil her requirements.. I ordered what I thought was Windows 8 .0 from my supplier...(did not notice that it actually came with 8.1 until everything went pear shaped) I installed all the programs my customer wanted, office 2013, Bitdefender 2014, Photoshop etc...no problems... I delivered the computer with a high performance desktop computer (which she didn't want because it made to much noise) didn't have a clause on my quote about purpose built computers not being refundable) my first big mistake with this customer... I installed her printer and everything seemed OK...Customer rings a couple of days later saying certain programs like office 2013 were blurry.....now I have already had a thread on that matter, so I won't bring it up again.... The symptoms she was experiencing was attributed to the 8.1 update....most computer manufactures have complained about it...when I discussed this with Samsung - they recommended a reset to 8.0... As I pointed out above - at the time I thought I had received a computer with 8.0 so that wouldn't be a problem.... My customer kept complaining, so first we upgraded her monitor to one with micro to hdmi (her old one was connected by micro to vga) The screen was delivered to her and I gave instructions on how to set it up for best results....didn't help still kept complaining... I said that the next step was the reset to 8.0 and that she should come with the new screen, and packing cases...just in case... She didn't bring the cases, I couldn't find anything wrong with the computer - but tried to reset it because I was under the assumption that Windows 8.0 was the original os... After resetting the computer it showed 8.1 and I just didn't twig...thought something had gone wrong with the reset process...so I did it again...computer crashed... I couldn't get it working and had to hand it in to Samsung repair to reset it on guarantee... The computer came back and after 5 attempts at installing the same software as before - I handed it back to Samsung again...they couldn't find anything wrong but changed the motherboard and sent it back to me... NOW this is where it goes even more downhill....I sent the computer in original case wrapped in bubble wrap inside another case to cope with the idiots in the post service (not all are idiots ) The first time Samsung sent it back to me they did the same... I used a similar case again on sending it back for repair a second time....BUT after changing the motherboard they just wrapped the original case in a thin plastic film and sent it to me like that... Samsung say that their packing cases are designed to withstand being handled by the post office... I found a lot of damaged to the cardboard packaging - but no physical damage to the computer...so I started it and installed windows updates, Samsung updates, Bitdefender.... That is as far as I have come...I restarted the computer after Bitdefender and everything was OK....I then turned off the computer while I ate my evening meal and when I started it again..... GUESS what!!!! it has the ants spinning in a circle....been like it for two hours...!!!! Before giving it to Samsung a second time I tried installing different software at different times and it would just spin and spin, so after 5 resets I gave it back to them...... Now I have the same situation again....a new computer that has been backwards and forwards to Samsung and I can't even get as far as installing all the software with it still working... This has cost me many hours, a failed sale of a beautiful desktop computer, and the tale isn't over yet...!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
