  1. Hi iamtheky I have just created a standard partition...assigned letter C and formated it to NTFS. Yes, I am running the winpe environment and using imagex to apply the wim....done this so many times with out problem... I am not getting any real error code just unable to open the wim.... Sorry, can't be of more help.... bookie32
  2. Hi Guys! Sorry for yet again a wim thread...just not sure what the problem could be... I created a Windows sysprep version of Windows 7 Home Premium on a Sata drive and I thought.....I know...what thought did... anyway I thought sysprep prepares for almost any software...? I saved the sysprep wim and transfered it a ssd drive....no problems I thought...when I tried to apply it it came up error opening the wim file? When I created the wim there was no problem and saving it doesn't usually cause any problems, so I don't know what it could be.... I did think that maybe the signature of the ssd is causing the problem... I have since applie the wim to the same sata drive and it went OK, so maybe it is a driver related issue...just wondering if I can inject the right driver into the wim to solve the problem? Sorry, just gets annoying when you think you have done things right and it doesn't work anyway.... Any ideas? Thanks! bookie32
  3. Hi Mate! Sorry for the late reply....story of my life at the moment....lol Thanks for the info... bookie32
  4. Hi John305! Sorry for the late reply..... Thanks for the info... Much appreciated! bookie32
  5. Hi folks! I backed up all files on the drive and run repair installation and then everything looked OK...or so I thought.... Started computer to check it now before giving it back to the customer and it ran chkdsk.....removed tons and now is replacing and it has been doing that for quite some time.... Spoke to the customer who couldn't really give me any info yesterday...."oh yes it did that for me".... As soon as this is done going to do a proper check to see the state of the drive and then reinstalll (fresh installation) if no problems show with the drive... bookie32
  6. Hi jaclaz Well, I am still opting for throwing it from my balcony.....at the moment....lol Thanks.....never a dull moment when your around.... bookie32
  7. Hi guys! I have just updated several computers for a customer....everything was working great.... My customer used one of them yesterday and it worked fine...she was happy....She started it today...a message came up that she didn't make a note of and all hell broke loose.... I have just installed and updated antivirus software on all computers. She said that she couldn't make anything happen when clicking on IE she tried logging into the other three accounts on the computer and lots of different errors came up....?! I suspected a virus... I have the computer now and have run chkdsk repair ....nada. I have run sfc /scannow....didn't even ask for the installation cd..... I have no errors in device manager, but there is no internet connection icon....?! I have checked user accounts nothing completely blank.... I have run several offline antivirus programs....nada?! It would be a lot of work to back up all the files and reinstall at this point...no point in cloning..... Has anyone any suggestions (apart from throwing it off my balcony)... Thanks! bookie32
  8. Hi Guys! Little update... I did a bit of research and found that I had installed the 64bit Office for my customer and that doesn't seem to allow one to export from Windows Live Mail to Microsoft Exchange.... It meant a reinstall to the 32bit version and hey presto it all worked.... I will call this solved! bookie32
  9. Hi Folks OK! LIttle problem....I hope...lol I am trying to fix a customer's computer....she had Office 2007 Enterprise and Office 2003 on a computer.... I have removed them and installed Office 2010 Standard.....set it to default email program and proceeded to export everything from windows live mail... Every time I try to export the email etc to microsoft exchange it says it can't because there is no standard (default) email program?! I have double checked that Outlook is the default email program.... Does anyone recognise this and can help me... Thanks! bookie32
  10. Hi John305 I agree that when you remove a program there are always remnents left, but in general they don't cause any problems....PLEASE NOTE IN GENERAL THEY DON'T CAUSE PROBLEMS..... I thank you for your info, but as I said I can't recommend anything that messes with the registry..... bookie32
  11. Hi -X- Thanks for that....kindof what I thought....lol. I make it a rule to never recommend software that claim to fix the registry etc. The worst one of the pack is Uniblue. I am always fixing computers for customers that have bought that crap!! Thanks for your input bookie32
  12. Hi folks! Does anyone know anything about Advanced Systemcare from these ? My experience of such programs is they do more harm than good, but I have a customer that swears by it.... Would be nice with a little general feedback from those who have tested it and those who know what damage it does.... bookie32
  13. Hi Mate! Been on me hols....just got back...lol Thanks for the info! bookie32
  14. Hi guys! I have been using windows defender offline.....saved a couple of computers with it now, but I have a computer that can update itself via network when running cd. I thought that it would be a case of injecting some more drivers into the boot.wim, but not having any luck. Has anyone had any experience of the windows defender offline? bookie32
  15. Hi Tripredacus! Well, in the code above from ner he used D /s/q. Just thought it would be nice to understand what each does. And regarding adding drivers that you don't need - I here you. I have done just that....added network drivers and mass storage. If I was to add other drivers to the pot and avoid adding them to the boot.wim but have them available on the CD then what would be the code for that if I have say my PE folder on C:\PE Thanks again for your advice....much appreciated! bookie32
  16. Hi again! Hs anyone a link to a comprensive list of command line switches. Want to know what does what and not just take from you guys.... Although I am grateful ner bookie32
  17. Hi again As you all know by now - I am about a hundred years behind you guys...I know that you should keep the boot.wim to a reasonable size because of memory errors. Yes, I know there is a ton of litrature out there and Tripredacus has some great links....still have a question. Question: To cover the bases when adding drivers...which ones are classed as the most important and should be in the wim and which ones can be in the ISO and not need to be loaded into ram? I know that network drivers are a biggy....just wondered about the others especially when there are so many drivers to be had from Driverpacks.net bookie32
  18. Hi Tripredacus I have contacted the broadband supplier today and the guy I spoke to said it shouldn't be like that....I said, well, it would be nice if someone would listen to me and do something about it. He is now going to send out an engineer to fix it. I still don't hold out much hope of that....brought this up several times with their support office.... They weren't interested in my pics either. I have, however, told the women in charge of negotiations regarding broadband for the residents that this problem exists and not to let them fob her off.... It remains to be seen what will happen. thanks! bookie32
  19. Hi Tripredacus! OK! I understand what you are saying...the thing is in general people set their networks to home and not work or public. The average user doesn't understand the concept. Even if I live in a building where there are twelve flats I don't expect to see other computers from my neighbours on my network. Yes, I understand that if you have a wireless connection - then your wireless connection will find any other computers protected/not protected. Even if I set my computers to home network when connecting to the internet for the first time - I don't see my neighbours computers and I shouldn't see them. Yes, I should see my computers in my network but not anyone outside. It would seem that this company have installed their system so that all flats in the building are part of the same network and the is unacceptable in my book. It doesn't matter how I set up my network inside my flat - I can't see anyone else....... Attached is the situation after reinstating his computer today. He is OLLE-DATOR. I can't see any situation here where it involves someones place of residence where the situation in the pic is acceptable. bookie32
  20. Hi again Looks like I was wrong on the virus front....I checked and rechecked with different offline media and sure enough there were different types of viruses on the computer. It was 01:00 ...too tired to write down the different problems.... It would also seem that the two problems were related because I now can see processor information etc.... One thing still bothers me about the setup at my customers...I live on a huge estate with 1033 apartments and a customer had a problem whereby he could see others in home network....thing is he didn't have a home network. I got in contact with our broadband supplier and they had updated some switches in different buildings which was the reason for the problem....and would be sorted as soon as they could. Now the same situation exists at this customers apartment. He can see others in his network and ...yes, you got it ....he doesn't have a network. I have approached his supplier, but they say there is no such problem....I will retest when I return the computer today...just that he pays for a separate broadband connection, so why is he seeing others on his so called network? Thoughts, please! bookie32
  21. Hi guys OK! Got a little bit of a problem with a customer computer.....I can get Internet connection from the Express Gate on the Asus motherboard, but as soon as I login to Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit the connection is initially there and then after about 30 seconds it disappears. Now as I have said the network card is working fine outside of Windows.... I wasn't sure when at the customers what it could be (forgot to check the Express Gate). It looked like there was a network connection problem and on trying to fix it it came up no contact with the dns server.... I can deactivate the network card and reactivate it again and for a few seconds I have Internet....then nada I have tried another separate network card in case it was faulty but...nada it isn't hardware related. I thought that maybe some virus had hijacked the computer and shut of the internet connection...can't find a virus?!! Another thing that has come up that wasn't there before when I delivered the computer - is I am not getting any processor info for some reason?! I will check the bios updates for that - just seems strange that every thing was working fine before.... I can restore to an image that I created of the computer before delivery, but it would be nice to know what is causing this. Of course - the network and processor problems don't have to be related....but one wonders what is happening? Any ideas...please say! bookie32
  22. Hi Mate! Nice one..... Thank you! bookei32
  23. Hi again I know this is an old thread, but I thought it was still relevant to the question in hand.... When creating the pe boot cd is there a way to add a preference for keyboard? I would like to add the Swedish one if that is possible. Thanks! bookie32
  24. Hi CoffeeFiend! OK! You have my attention. To be quite honest I don't care what the backup solution is as long as it works. I have looked at the pricing for the backup exec from symantec and that is another cost I can't warrant at the moment. I know it isn't that expensive for a small business....just I haven't money to spend on such things at the moment... Thanks anyway! bookie32
  25. Hi again! I have been reading up on the "Windows Server Backup" function and it is hard deciding what is the best route to take because of the llimitations of program being 2TB. bookie32
