if you dont like the policies your institution has implemented you dont have to use their network. the network was not implemented for the type of use you want it to do so even if you did get around it youre just denying another student of a quality internet connection. almost every policy (no matter how 'draconian') has been put in place for a reason. its as simple as that.

OK, this "go away" stuff will stop now. just because someone 'trolls' does not give you the right to flame them. if someone needs to 'go away' the mods will handle that.

ive seen http://www.k9webprotection.com/ recommended but have not used it personally.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-v...ons/64-bit.aspx you can order the dvd from MS directly. retail Vista Ultimate contains x64 install files as well

I dunno, to each his own but for all the crap people talk about vista, it outperforms everything ive tried (yes including XP) for instance right now i have: Vista business with aero enabled (minimal tweaking UAC/sec center/firewall disabled) mcafee ent (lesser of evils as well) -used to go commando to but that means never hooking any customer machines up on this side of the router -otherwise i cant trust the machine to stay as clean as i left it 2 firefox windows open (1 with 10 tabs, 1 playing the new terminator episode on hulu) Several torrents running at 123k up/ 63kup Corel Paint Shop 11, Textpad, Trillian, Outlook 2007 and Filezilla open (too lazy to count the open files) my cpu usage is bouncing between 3-4% with memory usage holding steady at 2.10G all that and not even a HINT of lag. even the stupidly fancy aero min/maximize wont slow it down. 9x just cant do that (even if it would run on this hardware) even if i could get 9x to boot on this box, it wouldnt see all the cores, most of the memory and prolly wouldnt see the HDs(i forget what the limit is -im sure you guys know though) so i stand by my old OSes for old hardware, new OSes for new hardware.

sounds like you've been using Norton (sorry i cant resist taking cheap shots at them) I don't get the 1998 software on 2008 hardware thing either. old computers are for old OSes/programs, new ones are for new OSes/programs. runnign anything but Xp/Vista/2003/2008/linux on 3Ghz range PC is just wasting your resources on nostalgia IMO. I can emulate a full 9x environment in VMware more efficiently than i could run 9x on my quad/dual cores (and reboot it faster too when it bombs) and anything that wont run well emulated (3d mostly) will likely run on XP/vista in compatibility mode. Im sorry but IMO, there is not real reason for 9x to be in use these days. 9x is not a functioanl replacement for a modern OS. Also, Kobain/Elvis/Tupac/Biggie are all dead. Just let them all go and remember the good time you had while they were around.

yeah i had a PSP that had a dead pixel (right at launch too so getting another wasnt an option) luckily, somebody figured out if you make a movie that quickly switches from contrasting colors every frame, loop it and let it sit for a few hours, you could actually wake the dead pixel. i was skeptical but desperate so i tried it and i couldnt believe it actually worked. the 19" display with the burnin is long gone now (got gateway to replace it for us ) but i have a 37" LCD TV that has a powerpoint burnt into it that im gonna try the all white trick on. ill let you know how it goes

Why would somebody use Win98? Because next year it goes to eleven
-
yeah id much prefer an operating system that looks at 3 gigs of ram, shrugs, and starts dumping stuff into the page file instead. its just a much more efficient method. /sarcasm

Word 2007 Backwards compatability....how far back does it go?
PC_LOAD_LETTER replied to glradk's topic in Microsoft Office
Office 2007 should be able to open nearly any document (some documents with embedded vbscripts might have compatibility issues) created with any version of office from 97-2007 -
vb.net webbroswser control
PC_LOAD_LETTER replied to Tehdead's topic in Programming (C++, Delphi, VB/VBS, CMD/batch, etc.)
for the record, i dont think that we have a rule against circumventing web protection systems such as captcha. it doesnt matter though, captchas are useless against a determined user anyways. it just depends on the complexity of the captcha code and if the user is willing to invest in writing enough code to decode it. -
Yeah this should be declared some kind of gamer holiday. Anything the man says from this point on is just entertainment. Would be nice if he was committed to some kind of mental hospital though. The man has a problem.

best method to disable windows firewall Computer Configuration->Windows Settings->Security Settings->System Services->Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) (Startup Mode: Disabled) if Security center isnt already disabled on your domain (i believe it is by default) but if its not, youll need to change this as well to shut security center up about Windows Firewall being disabled: Computer Configuration->Windows Settings->Security Settings->System Services->Security Center (Startup Mode: Disabled)

Dell 755 freezes during mini-setup
PC_LOAD_LETTER replied to ferretrix's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
Im with wilk1976 on this one. i dont use sysprepped images but all my 755s alway lock up on first boot if AHCI is on (even if it was on on the machine the image came from) -
That setting is stored with a few others in the UserPreferencesMask Key in HKCU\Control Panel\Desktop look for "Keyboard cues" on this page http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechn...8.mspx?mfr=true theres also a thread here on MSFN about it http://www.msfn.org/board/HKCUControl-Pane...901#entry578901 AFAIK you cannot search inside gpedit itself. however, you can filter the Administrative Templates branches by Requirements with View-> Filtering so if your looking for settings for a particular part of windows, that might help narrow the field

Why doesn't Microsoft allow unsigned visual styles?
PC_LOAD_LETTER replied to flarn2006's topic in Visual Styles
they just really like the color blue. I don't think an official statement has ever been made as to why themes are so locked down but if i had to guess its probably a marketing decision. They dont want to 'dilute the image' or some similar marketing nonsense. I think they underestimated how many people would adopt a skinned interface which is prolly why it looks like it was designed by Fisher-Price. Its kinda sad when the shiny translucent, color changing Aero glass in Vista comes off looking more professional than XP's "Bliss" abomination. -
Slipstreamed XPSP3, but installs as XPSP0
PC_LOAD_LETTER replied to leass_lp's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
i would redownload the SP3 file you slipped. it sounds like it may not have been the right version: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;displaylang=en
