  1. Have you gotten any of the other suggestions to work that do not use the unattended file, since everyone has told you that will not work, or are you insisting that using the unattended file is the only way you want to do it? I'm sure that if you are able to get it to work reliably that there will be many people that will thank you profusely, but you will be the first do to so that I am aware of. Cheers and Regards
  2. It's more a factor of what other pieces of software are involved - not just batch and .reg files by themselves which in general do not require double backslashes. There are other utilities that use the backslash as an escape character. For example, you might have seen references to "\n" being used to represent a "new line"? This is true in all the various versions of C, C++, etc. Anyway, since the backslash is used as an escape character, then if you really wanted to use a backslash as a backslash, you have to double it up, ie escape the escape character. I usually see doubled backslashes used for code that is run during Windows installation routines, since many of those routines are written in C++. But someone else will need to give you better specifics. I can just tell you the "why", not the "when". Sorry. Cheers and Regards
  3. Once implemented in the kernel, I wonder whether the registry setting that tomasz86 pointed to will work so that you would have the option to switch back and forth if desired? Can't imagine that you would want to, but just wondering... Cheers and Regards
  4. Well, you can always solve the problem, even without finding the solution, by calling the guy on the phone - "Hey, what's your email address?" LOL Cheers and Regards
  5. Google Translate turned that into: LOL Cheers and Regards
  6. @CoffeeFiend - LOL - Very funny! (Not a well hidden message though - it was blurry, but I could still see it. But it was probably done that way on purpose. Can you imagine the irony if the colorblind person could not see the message and bought the shirt thinking it really said "I [heart] the colorblind!"? Now THAT would have been really funny!) @Larry - Nah - it's just an inconvenience at times. It does keep people from being able to have certain jobs - a surgeon is pretty much out - and it was a real pain in school back in the day to be an Electrical Engineer (reading the resistor color codes was tough). But in World War II, colorblind people were actually sought out as bombardiers, because they were not fooled by camouflage as much as "regular" people. They were better able to ignore the colors and look only for the outlines and movement. Whenever I'm asked "What do you see?", I fall back on this analogy - Pretend I've never tasted a banana. Can you describe to me what one tastes like? - See, without a common frame of reference... We each see the way we always have seen, and until we're told different, we assume everyone else sees the same way. Those of us that are colorblind are definitely NOT "less fortunate". It's no different than being near-sighted, left-handed, or even just short. Other than the occasional annoyance it is no problem. And don't be so hard on Google Translate. There are several translator programs out there, none of them are perfect, and each is usually better than the others in a different particular area. Jokes, idioms, sayings, even common expressions are all almost impossible to always translate correctly from one language to another. Part of the problem is those phrases are usually tied up with the culture or history of the people that speak that language. As humans, the general gist of those expressions is usually present in one way or the other in most cultures, but they're usually expressed differently. Jaclaz can give you an example of the Italian expression that is best expressed in English as "A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush" - it's a bit different. I saw him mention it somewhere but can't put my finger on it at the moment. How about the common English admonition to "Sleep tight." For a non-English speaker, how do you translate that? Tight? Compared to loose? LOL Anyway, I usually just uses those translators as a very rough guide. And if you're trying to translate something into a different language, you usually need to run it through the translator from English to ___, then back from ___ to English, to see if it's still what you thought it was, then if real important, find someone who speaks the language to double check things for you. Cheers and Regards
  7. Flash has to be enabled in your browser, of course. After pressing Start, whatever you put in the "A" box will be moved between the "If" and "Then" and also next to the "P2:". Whatever you put in the "B" box will be moved after the "Then" and also under the line. But I must not get the whole point of the app, because it doesn't really make an impression on me. I guess the second way of writing the expression is the mathematical equivalent to the "If A Then B" version? I understood your explanation better, Larry. As to the red and green letters you used in your last post, regardless whether they were struck through or not, at first glance they looked the same to me. Looking at them longer I could tell a difference, the struck through letters were easier since they have a larger volume of color, and if enlarged even more so. Cheers and Regards
  8. I don't think there is any more chance of this happening than thin clients being universally adapted in the workplace, for exactly the reasons that you gave for not wanting it. There is a place for it, and for any option, but not widespread, IMO. Cheers and Regards
  9. But asking for instructions or a script so that you can modify your own copy to achieve such an ISO yourself IS allowed, and encouraged, as long as the process only requires tools that are openly available and truly free. Cheers and Regards
  10. The difference in screen sizes can also help explain why those of us on larger displays, with correspondingly smaller pixels, have a harder time seeing the colored pulsing effect unless the image is enlarged. Cheers and Regards
  11. Mine are done on Friday, so my last one is dated 30 March. Why did you say they are always done on Monday? Cheers and Regards
  12. @Larry, Yes, even though the very dark outline is more noticeable, I think the purple color looks better. At least I can see it better than either of the images with red pulses, but still very subtle. But I really can only see what is truly happening by zooming in. Larry, out of curiosity, what is the screen resolution and screen size you use on your system? Cheers and Regards
  13. Hey Larry! Let our good natured, all in good fun and hope to learn something, banter begin. [if I use any color or graphic related term incorrectly please forgive and correct me.] Stop signs were originally yellow, and police more often, around here, use flashing blue lights. Flashing red lights have also been known to give certain people epileptic seizures. Certain shades of solid red letters against a certain shade of solid blue background seems, to me, to be flashing even when it is not and gives me a headache and is almost impossible for me to read. But I agree that red seems to go better with the color schemes I have seen you use. Nothing is ever absolute, it's always relative - as you've said, a matter of contrast. Factors include color, amount of the color, brightness, background, and context, among others. It also helps to have something to compare it to. For example, if I'm driving at night on a deserted road and come over a hill and come upon a red light that is either yellow or red and it is too dark or rainy for me to see the outline of the light, I can't be positive which it is - yellow or red. So I slow down. If the light moves and gets darker/duller in color then that means it was yellow and now it is red. If it doesn't change, it was already red. In either case I'm already slowing down so I'm prepared. The green lights do not look green, but rather a slightly off-white, not unlike some street lights. So again in the dark and rain if I can't see the traffic light outline I might not even realize there is a light there at all. But if it's green then it really doesn't matter. Regardless, I've never had any problem whatsoever driving in the last 42 years because of my "condition". Yes I can see the Tripredacus animation "better". I think you are right that the various differences in contrast to both the original outline color and the background compared to that of the Primus image are the reason that is true, since I would assume the "red" is the same in both color and dimension in both cases, and the letters themselves are the same color and dimension? (The images I included above are enlarged 400%.) But yet, to me, in the Tripredacus animation the red appears much brighter and the letters very slightly brighter. Against the respective backgrounds, the edge of the letters appears much sharper in the Tripredacus image, while the edge of the letters in the Pimus image appears almost fuzzy or blurry, since it blends in more with the background. I realize that this is sometimes a desired result, but I'm just saying ... You are right that making the letters red instead of the outline will still result in a 1 pixel line, but it will be the white changing to red instead of the light-brown changing to red - a higher contrast change. If that doesn't work, you could also try changing BOTH the letter AND outline to red. That would give a 3 pixel width amount of color, so would be a larger amount of the color, and you would be changing the contrasts of both the outline and the letter, all while making no changes to the color palette. You could even change 3 letters at once - for one letter change both the outline and the letter, while for the letters on either side of that letter change only the outline. However that might be too extreme. I think you and I both appreciate subtlety. In any case, you are the artist, and in this case the client as well, and color blind people are in the minority. But I knew you would want your work to be appreciated by as wide an audience as possible - otherwise, why post it anywhere at all? Cheers and Regards my friend
  14. Since I know, from experience, that you want your images perfect, I just thought I would point out that those of us with red-green color blindness, (up to 10% of the population http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_blindness) have a very hard time seeing the "red pulsing letters". The part that is red is so small I really didn't see it at all until I enlarged it. If you actually made the entire letter red, and not just the outline, then at least there would be enough volume of color to be more noticeable and draw my attention, if that was your goal. As it is, even staring at it and concentrating, the letters look completely static at the default size on my monitor (23" flat screen 1920x1080). Figured you would want to know. By the way, the length of time of the pulsations, the previous post vs the last one, made no difference in this regard. The problem, for me at least, is that the amount of color is just too small to see. If it is enlarged to 200% I can tell something is happening, and at 300% I can see it clearly. Cheers and Regards
  15. I would hazard a guess that the second card is working just fine, but the first card is recognized first, causing the second card to have a conflict and therefore not work. I would also guess that if the OP had switched slots that the two cards were plugged into the motherboard that the second card would have worked and the first card would have had a conflict. From the OP's description of the two cards, the second card sounds like it is much more flexible and would give the OP more connection options, so personally I would probably try to take out the first card, connect everything to the second card and see if the second card is then recognized and works. The second card could very well also have a true problem in which case then he would know and he could trash the card with a clear conscience. But if the OP does not need the extra connections, then sticking with the first card, which seems to meet his current needs, is obviously a perfectly acceptable alternative. I agree we have now beat this horse almost to death. Cheers and Regards
  16. I'm glad we were able to help you solve your initial problem, the reason you started the thread in the first place. Cheers and Regards
  17. I get why some folks like running Win98SE, but why do you want to run FE? Just curious. Cheers and Regards

    Boot error

I agree 100% that the symptoms would require extremely odd circumstances to be caused by a hardware fault. But then your "fix" of "booting from the Windows CD subsequently and consistently (so far) enables a normal boot" would also seem to require odd circumstances to be caused by software, though I don't think any of us have taken "a death or glory stand on it" either - at least I haven't. But as all of us, you, me. and everyone else who has read this thread, and I assume everywhere else you might have looked for help, has come up empty, we're all grasping for straws. So, both as process of elimination and in hoping that either another symptom will present itself or something else will occur to us or at the very least a potential cause will be eliminated, we start trying anything we can think of, no matter how unlikely it may seem, starting with the quickest and easiest things we can think of to try. For most of us the "simple" things such as cleaning, swapping cables, etc are easy and quick things to try. You are not alone with physical challenges that do not make those things easy, and I do not think that any of us mean to belittle you in any way for your problems, physical or computer related. I think the number of comments in this thread, both serious and comedic, (Thanks puntoMX! Levity is almost always appreciated to lighten the mood.), show that the curiosity and efforts to help remain. I'm glad the comments, on both sides, have been toned down - the earlier aggressive ones were not helpful to anyone. I'm still coming up empty for anything software related to suggest. I know you don't think it will help, and it probably won't, but to shut us up and focus all thoughts on the elusive software gremlin, is there any chance that you might have a friend or neighbor, adult or teenager, who might be able to give you a hand to disconnect your tower and lift it up onto a table for you so that you could do an extra cleaning this year, swap out some cables, check that everything is seated well, and give things a once over, without causing you too much physical discomfort? Other than that, I personally would probably lean toward backing everything up, wipe and reinstall, even though that is a chore I know nobody enjoys. I really am grasping at straws, so these are just the only things that come to mind so far. Cheers and Regards

    Boot error

@jaclaz, I'm out of my element here, but because of what you mentioned, could that be somehow temporarily "fixed" by BIOS changes to the boot order? I say this because tony177 implies he makes a BIOS change in order to boot to the Windows CD: and then I assume he makes a BIOS change again to boot back to the HDD. I also assume that no BIOS change was needed to boot to the two floppies he mentioned which could be why trying them didn't "do" anything. But again I'm WAY out of my element here and just grasping at straws. Anyway, would you please point tony177 to a method he could use to correct the issue you noticed to see if that fixes hie problem? Of course, as I'm sure he will say, this doesn't really explain why his system will boot "normally" for several days between hiccups, does it? Cheers and Regards
  20. After all the work you've done with these various tools you've used and modified, would you please post all the current scripts/tools you use with a very brief description of how you use them, or are they all already conveniently available in one place? Cheers and Regards
  21. And it usually goes without saying, but since Ponch didn't specifically mention it, don't forget that you can't hook two drives to the same cable if both drives are set as Master. (Or both as Slave). Have you checked whether the drives are showing up correctly in the BIOS? In other words, is this a Windows issue or something more basic? Also, if you have another one laying around, it never hurts to try another cable, they can go bad after multiple connection/disconnect cycles. Cheers and Regards
  22. Actually I don't think you're seeing the blue line. Over on the right of the image, next to the "Stop Installation" button, this is a blowup of the edge of the window: That blue line is along the entire right and bottom edges of the picture that UltimateSilence posted. But like I said, I don't know if this is intentional or not. I haven't noticed such a line on any images on my system. Cheers and Regards

    Boot error

@tony177, I'm not sure what exactly you are looking for. Best I can tell, you are hoping that someone will say: "Yes, I had that exact same problem. This ... is what happened to cause it. This ... is why the problem manifested itself in that way. And this ... is what you have to do to fix it. It is guaranteed to work, and here ... are all my references that you can check out proving that I am a recognized expert in this area." Other than holding out for the remote, though I suppose possible, likelihood of that happening, you don't seem to appreciate anyone's suggestion of what you might try in the meantime. You either explain, sometimes kindly and sometimes not, why their idea won't work, or if you agree their idea has the remotest possibility of working you merely "add your suggestion to the list of various solutions I might try". You don't seem willing to actually try anything. You don't want to make the problem worse, understandable, even though you admit you have backup images of the disks, so it should not be a huge inconvenience to restore things as they are. You say that "it would be ground hog day all over again", but that's not totally true - you could positively check off one idea that didn't work. You don't even want to take suggestions as benign as swapping cables to the disc drive. Sure it might not, even probably won't help, but what is the harm in trying? ANYTHING (Sorry for shouting) that moves the least little bit such as disk drives, not to mention expansion and contraction due to temperature changes, metal fatigue from being compressed into a given position for four years, corrosion from the least bit of moisture, problems due to faulty manufacturing issues (it happens to the very best of companies), dust if you haven't cleaned out your PC's case in four years, etc has the possibility, no matter how remote, of causing an intermittent connection in any of your cables that will only show up after some period of time. So I guess if you're not willing to try any of our suggestions then we'll just have to patiently watch and wait, as you will as well, for the expert to stumble upon this thread. Please let us know when you discover what the problem and solution turn out to be so that we can better help the next person who comes along with this problem. Cheers and Regards
  24. Since you've found that installing with no drivers works fine and using all the drivers fails, why don't you try to start with no drivers and add one group of drivers at a time until you find which group of drivers is creating the problem. Then pull out half of that group at a time and keep narrowing it down until you are able to find out what is going on. Yes it will take a little while, but since nothing else has worked ... Once you figure out WHAT is causing the problem, then it might become more obvious WHY and what you can do to fix it. Cheers and Regards
  25. The reason for the rule is that we have no way of knowing what restrictions on getting help with a project/assignment that a teacher might have imposed. So rather than needing to trust the "No, really, the teacher said I could get all the help I wanted!" type of statement, the rule was made to try to be fair and yet not give inappropriate assistance and help someone cheat. Cheers and Regards
