How to install Windows from USB- WinSetupFromUSB with GUI
wimb replied to ilko_t's topic in Install Windows from USB
BOOTICE does not make the CHS Knockout patches in the NTFS BootSector which are known to be necessary for booting USB-sticks on computers with HP BIOS. see cdob in post #218 in http://reboot.pro/5306/page__st__215 You can also try BOOT_USB.exe and use the Format Stick button. http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?showtopic=24424 In folder BOOT_USB\makebt you can change the filename of modified ntdetect_mod.com in NTDETECT.COM so that this file is used. This is useful for booting USB-sticks with Dell computers. -
Well it was worth to try it, but it will be difficult then to find a solution to get the desired boot.ini .......
-
You can try to add $OEM$\$1 folder structure to your Setup Source and put your boot.ini in the $1 folder http://unattended.msfn.org/unattended.xp/view/web/18/ I observed that the content of $OEM$ is copied to your Install partition at the very end of TXT-mode of XP Setup. It means that your boot.ini will be copied AFTER the normal FileCopy and just before the reboot. I don't know if it works for you, but it is certainly the best and last chance to manipulate XP Setup before the reboot for GUI mode.

In the quotet link there was an old Download link that I changed now for the correct one. Please download version 40 from mediafire link given in main article on Make_PE3 thread. http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?showtopic=23931
-
Speaking of latest download version Make_PE3_40.exe I don't see file start_net.cmd but only file startnet.cmd Also at line 16 I don't see the line that you quotet. The file startnet.cmd in the download has date 2011-01-03 May be use a fresh download and run first without making changes and then try again .....

Your XP Setup Source is missing required SATA drivers. Also usb_prep8.cmd is very old and outdated. The most recent comparable version is USB_MultiBoot_10 But you will find in the present section a lot of more advanced techniques to Install XP from USB ...... You might make use of: WinNTSetup v2 of JFX Install XP from a ISO file - cdob How to install Windows from USB- WinSetupFromUSB with GUI - ilko_t

Test if usbscan is working in mini 7 or in Portable 7 made with VHD_W7_Compact.exe If it works in one of these versions, you can make filelist comparison and add extra files and take working registry entries for usbscan. Also you can watch with ProcMon what files are being used and add these. Otherwise no more info availble for now .....
-
That is good news. I found the filelist when reducing to mini 7 while trying to keep Printer working. Also in mini 7 the sti service is working.I think files extra for Paint were needed: \Windows\System32\stclient.dll \Windows\System32\sti.dll \Windows\System32\storage.dll \Windows\System32\wiaservc.dll GOOD LUCK
-
The Mini 7 version of 650 MB has Printer Support and is probably the best and the easiest solution. http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?showtopic=23553&view=findpost&p=167661 You can compare filelist of mini_7vhd.txt with 7PE. At least you need to add to 7PE folder \Windows\System32\spool\*.* and these files and their corresponding mui files. \Windows\System32\compstui.dll \Windows\System32\DeviceCenter.dll \Windows\System32\DeviceDisplayObjectProvider.exe \Windows\System32\DeviceDisplayStatusManager.dll \Windows\System32\DeviceEject.exe \Windows\System32\DeviceMetadataParsers.dll \Windows\System32\DevicePairing.dll \Windows\System32\DevicePairingFolder.dll \Windows\System32\DevicePairingHandler.dll \Windows\System32\DevicePairingProxy.dll \Windows\System32\DevicePairingWizard.exe \Windows\System32\DeviceProperties.exe \Windows\System32\DeviceUxRes.dll \Windows\System32\localspl.dll \Windows\System32\localui.dll \Windows\System32\ntprint.dll \Windows\System32\ntprint.exe \Windows\System32\print.exe \Windows\System32\PrintBrmUi.exe \Windows\System32\printfilterpipelineprxy.dll \Windows\System32\printfilterpipelinesvc.exe \Windows\System32\PrintIsolationHost.exe \Windows\System32\PrintIsolationProxy.dll \Windows\System32\printmanagement.msc \Windows\System32\printui.dll \Windows\System32\printui.exe \Windows\System32\spoolss.dll \Windows\System32\spoolsv.exe \Windows\System32\tcpmon.dll \Windows\System32\tcpmon.ini \Windows\System32\tcpmonui.dll \Windows\System32\upnpcont.exe \Windows\System32\winspool.drv \Windows\System32\WINSPOOL.EXE Then you need extra registry keys for 7 PE derived from working mini 7 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\PE3-SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Print] [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\PE3-SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Enum\Root\LEGACY_HTTP] [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\PE3-SYSTEM\ControlSet001\services\HTTP] [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\PE3-SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Print] [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\PE3-SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Print]

I don't have 7 SP1 to do experiments and besides I don't have enough time .... But if someone else gives solution, then of course I will add it to the package .... Another approach would be to try VHD_W7_Compact.exe for SP1 Win 7 Source. Personally I think this is far better than 7 PE http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?showtopic=23553&view=findpost&p=167661

Hi JFX Your WinNTSetup2_x86.exe tool is very handy, I used it for Direct Install of Windows 7 in VHD file. http://reboot.pro/9830/page__view__findpost__p__123974 For the Tweaks I found that: - Disable System Restore did NOT work to Disable System Protection in Win 7 VHD - Show cmd icon - the context menu does not appear The latter was easily fixed as you know and then also shows cmd icon Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 ; Open Command here - just delete the 2 keys [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\cmd] "Extended"=- [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell\cmd] "Extended"=- Thanks again for your POWER TOOL

I tried to tell ISO filename to WinVBlock in step 2, but unfortunately the virtual CD drive on USB-stick did NOT survive Install of devices in GUI-mode of XP Setup. XP Setup FAILED as described earlier .... It means that the cmd trick as proposed by cdob will remain as working solution. This is the Grub4dos menu title 2 that I used and where XP Setup FAILED title 2 Continue Windows XP setup map /XP3_1102.iso (0xff) checkrange 0x80 read 0x8280 && map (hd0) (hd1) checkrange 0x80 read 0x8280 && map (hd1) (hd0) map --rd-size=2048 map --mem (rd)+4 (0x55) map --hook write (0x55) #GRUB4DOS\x00v=1\x00XP3_1102.iso\x00\xff\x00 chainloader (hd0)+1

The winnt.sif file is only needed in TXT-mode. The GUI-mode will use the created WINDOWS\system32\$winnt$.inf file which contains the info of winnt.sif

This modification of presetup.cmd works for me. The WinVBlock virtual floppy is NOT needed anymore at reboot for GUI-mode. The XP Setup source in virtual CD on USB is found and survives install of devices. GUI-mode of XP Setup continues without error. Install of XP is OK. The proposed title 2 of grub4dos menu did NOT work for me. On selecting title 2 I returned to grub4dos menu on USB-stick. I did modify and used original mapping of title 2 and then everything worked for me: title 1 Start Windows XP setup - XP3_11_2.iso map --mem /winvblock.ima (fd0) map --mem /winvblock.ima (fd1) map /XP3_11_2.iso (0xff) checkrange 0x80 read 0x8280 && map (hd0) (hd1) checkrange 0x80 read 0x8280 && map (hd1) (hd0) map --hook chainloader (0xff) title 2 Continue Windows XP setup map /XP3_11_2.iso (0xff) checkrange 0x80 read 0x8280 && map (hd0) (hd1) checkrange 0x80 read 0x8280 && map (hd1) (hd0) map --hook chainloader (hd0)+1 Boot twice from USB (using title 1 and 2) - and then Reboot from drive where XP is installed. Congratulations with the NEW method for Install of XP from USB I think it is the most simple way to Install XP from USB The same method can also be used to Install XP in HDD Image file as described by Doodoo and sara - pmedia and wimb http://reboot.pro/13856/page__p__122385#entry122385 http://reboot.pro/13731/ http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?showtopic=23553

You need the MassSorage as boot driver. I would advise to use DPsBase.exe and MassStorage + TXT-mode enabled (gives boot driver) and use method 2 (as always). @cdob I am using AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4800+ and ASUS M2A-VM HDMI mobo and Windows XP SP3 Professional (with and without UpdatePack) I found that if the WinVBlock virtual floppy is defined in RAM using --mem option, then the virtual CD on USB will survive install of devices in GUI mode and XP Setup is OK. Without --mem for virtual floppy then the virtual CD on USB is lost just after install of devices in GUI mode and XP Setup will FAIL.
-
You are missing MassStorage driver needed to see your Harddisk. http://driverpacks.net/downloads For Install of XP on a modern system with SATA Drives it is needed to use DPsBase.exe for Integrating in your XPSOURCE BTS DriverPack Massstorage with TXT Mode Enabled.
-
You can use Make_USB.exe of U_XP_SET package. In that case use Format Stick button and NTFS format http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?showtopic=21883

The WinVBlock virtual floppy drive must be defined in RAM by using --mem option. In that case the WinVBLock virtual CD drive with XP Setup ISO can be located on USB This works OK for me for Install of XP from USB using XP Setup ISO file on USB title 1 Start Windows XP setup - XP3_11_1.iso map --mem /winvblock.ima (fd0) map --mem /winvblock.ima (fd1) map /XP3_11_1.iso (0xff) checkrange 0x80 read 0x8280 && map (hd0) (hd1) checkrange 0x80 read 0x8280 && map (hd1) (hd0) map --hook chainloader (0xff) title 2 Continue Windows XP setup map --mem /winvblock.ima (fd0) map --mem /winvblock.ima (fd1) map /XP3_11_1.iso (0xff) checkrange 0x80 read 0x8280 && map (hd0) (hd1) checkrange 0x80 read 0x8280 && map (hd1) (hd0) map --hook chainloader (hd0)+1

I found that WinVBlock virtual floppy and virtual CD drive only survive in GUI mode when they are defined in RAM or on local harddisk. It means that WinVBlock virtual CD on USB-drive is present in GUI mode at beginning of install of devices, but is lost after install of devices is finished. Result is that second part of GUI mode has no access to virtual CD with XP Setup ISO and then XP Setup will FAIL with earlier described STOP at T-13 I tried also to use clean XP-SP3 source, but that makes no difference. These are some interesting list of devices made during GUI mode of XP Setup, before and after install of devices. At T-13 STOP then I have used Shift + F10 to open command prompt. Then used ListDOSdevices.exe and see only real build-in CD-ROM drives (plus all other normal drives) I think at T-13 install of Windows Media Player version 11 should occur (but pop-up of small progress window does NOT appear) After Continue with GUI Setup and Reboot - Then freezes just before Desktop ....

Hi cdob, I tried your NEW way of Install of XP. In GUI-mode of XP Setup there was an unexpected STOP at T-13 The message is Access denied for Windows\system32\grpconv.exe Setup can continue and at T-9 the video driver is installed by DriverForge On booting Windows XP then it freezes just before Desktop .... Do you have any idea how to fix it ?
