Now it looks like you have your heart set on an intel system, but check these amd systems from ABS.$1185 and you get a faster processor(upgradable too),an Abit mobo which in my opinion are top notch, ddr micron memory,a 19 inch monitor(samsung),liteon cdrw 40x12x48,creative audigy sound,5300 5.1 speakers, etc.(got carried away).Clearly a much better deal.ABScomputers

In the device manager remove the two references to unknown device. The usb root hub twice is ok those are your plug ins.You should have two with that reference. Now if there is a "safely remove hardware icon in your task bar click on it and see if it says "safely remove usb printer ".If yes then click and remove the usb cable from the socket. If no icon then remove anyway.Reboot and then plug in the usb printer cable. If your drivers are installed then you will get the message that the device is ready for use.If not you will be promted to install them. With my usb printer I had to install the drivers first and then plug it in.I use a hub for all my usb devices now and have less startup problems.Anyway it doesn't sound serious, and you may have to uninstall the software that came with the printer and remove any double entries as previously stated, and start from scratch.

Just be one of the herd for now and you time will come.To many chiefs and not enough Indians is not good. Not meant in any way to be a derogatory statement.

If they are in use couldn't they be in the start menu or at least some app that was downloaded along with it?Just a guess but try running msconfig and see if your movie or an association of it is starting with windows.

I agree with FthrJack on the sfc /scannow solution. It works believe me.Windows protected files will be restored. This works with win2k also.Just go into bios and select the cdrom as your first boot device. It will be in the "Advanced Setup" section. If there is electrical shorting damage to the mobo, you will have problems, some as small as a pci slot not working to a completely haywire electronic nightmare.Be patient though and turn off the power as previously stated, and shine some light so you can see any oil bridgeing anywhere.Remember even with the power off an atx board still has power retained within it so use a ground strap.Good luck.

Has anyone tried the Pool Shark PC pool cue controller?Looks like a mouse with a roller on top.The package came with the mouse,a cue stick and virtual pool 3.It's fun so far, actually takes a bit to get used to it.I'm not much of a gamer so you won't hurt my feelings if you think it's lame.

Yes,I just recently had a problem with WMP.It would not launch and I ran the sfc command and all was well.It doesn't ask for anything it just says that it will replace xp protected files and then I click ok.
-
Nice case, could you tell us who the manufacturer is?
-
How about Run,then type sfc /scannow,it will replace any protected files.Worth a try?

If your cdrom didn't come with drivers then you need to get some for win3.1.Usually they come with retail cdroms.Identify your hardware on the top,as it sits right side up.DriverGuide and go here to find your drivers.

The only thing I would do with your rig is remove those stickers from the power supply. You probably already have.I think a yellow keyboard, black mouse, black speakers, black montor, would make it sweeter.

You don't always get peace of mind with the Dels and HP's.But I do apologize Word, for not answering your question with a simple answer. You are in the ballpark according to PC World top home pc list. The ABS Awsome 3110 is the most expensive value system at $1609 while the ABS Bravado 2300 at $ 1239 is the cheapest.
-
Ok Word,I priced out all the parts on pricewatch and came up with $1177 including shipping. That leaves $322 savings if you build it yourself. This includes Win xp pro oem cd,and Cyber Acoustics best speakers model #CA-5150.I also priced out a similar built system with the new Asus A7V333 and your talking $1650 with a neon lit Chieftec case.If you never built your own system you might consider the $322 saving here plus the shear satisfaction of building it yourself. You have many friend's here that can guide you through the process or provide information to complete your project.

Has anyone partitioned their hard drive with an existing copy of XP on it using Partition Magic 8.0?Is it possible to partition an ntfs format into 1 ntfs and 1 fat32 or can you only have 2 ntfs partitions? And finally will XP recognize that another operating system has been installed?

Hi,welcome to fast food land,my name is Zipp, can I take your orders?
-
Sorry I took so long to get back. The problem was a bad power supply. It's not good to go cheap on a power supply. This was the first one that I built that I tried to save on a case power supply combo.Never again.

My Win2k pro sp3 works fine no problems. It runs faster than my xp computer on a comparable hardware setup in each system. This I believe is happening because I have xp enhancements all turned on.XP is win2k pro based anyway, with many more features.I like them both, one is dressed up and the other is slummin.Drew did you install sp3 during a fresh install?I tried installing the sp3 during a fresh install and it gave me problems, but after I went to win update and downloaded the criticals and some recommended updates(after reformating) it worked fine. Also it might make a difference if you have sp2 to begin with.Just curious as to how you installed it.

I'm with you guys it's fun computing and experimenting with hardware, software, new tech.I've got remnants of a treasure chest of junk parts and old sytsems that I don't want to get rid of.I always wanted to install Linux sed ,how can I get a free copy?Any good sites about it?

Hi Bradbo, Have you tried to defrag from safe mode?I have read that you should turn off any bios boot antivirus.I had the same problem with 98 and safe mode did the trick. Also if your comfortable opening the case and you have a ground strap,I would take out and re seat all your cards and check the ide cables to make sure they are tight.Memory sticks also.I also had such badly corrupted files that I have reformated several times. If you are going to keep 98 on that machine you might want to get roxio's goback program so you can restore the files that are messing you up.
