  1. I made a mistake with one installation - checked to remove Windows firewall as usual, but forgot it's needed on this PC. I cannot reinstall it because it is my friend's and I won't be visiting him anytime soon again. So - any way to reinstall it?
  2. I don't care even if it was Jehova, but please, for the sake of everything nice and good left on Earth, don't start about Chuck Norris
  3. I still believe this Samsung is among the fastest drives available if not fastest alone (wish they made 1TB VelociRaptor, lol). Power is perfectly ok... I assume the problem is having the PC on 24/7. I did have some lockups and freezes. Might be that. and Samsung's RMA is not of any interest for me cause I can have the disc replaced right on at the store I bought it in
  4. No, not really... The story is a bit more complicated, but no 700GB of which 500 are movies
  5. There are some REALLY funky ideas out there Google some articles about the new (well not too new anymore, few months) SpinPoint disc with 334GB per platter. It rocks performance-wise. And aside from my bad luck I haven't heard about a person with failed one. P.S. 700GB is AFTER deleting all the stuff I can live without
  6. Well the trouble is that I have no use for 1) another drive and 2) smaller than 1TB (which is not THAT cheap).
  7. lol yup The other drive thing is good idea but it's useless at the same time - I mean, buying another disc just for cases like this is um... I don't make fortune really! I need new speakers and some other things more... Maybe over time I will buy some huge reliable disc where I will backup everything once a month.
  8. It's interesting the errors (I assume each of the entries stand for one sector) are right next to each other. The real bad things are that 1) how am I supposed to backup 700GB of data and 2) the disc is installed into HDD Silencer... gah. Give me back my twelve years old PC with 2.5GB 5.25" disc I only hope this SpinPoint is suitable for almost nonstop operation. I sure do like its performance. But the bad luck floating around me is getting scary. Five boards RMAed since march and now disc...
  9. Well, I wouldn't dare to say discs are shipped with some already bad sectors, but.. So far there is 20kB worth of bad sectors as reported by chkdsk. I am not entirely sure how many sectors does that mean, but it doesn't grow. I wouldn't normally find out at all if I didn't feel like doing a check "just for the hell of it". This was reported by the tool provided for this disc: [sELF DIAGNOSTIC (ESTOOL v2.11 )] Model Name : SAMSUNG HD103UJ Rom Revision : 1AA01112 Serial Number : S13PJ1KQ507857 Drive Size : 953868MB (LBA : 1953523055) Start Time : Thu Sep 25 03:09:47 2008 ------------------------------------------------- Test Loop Number : 1/1 ------------------------------------------------- >> READ DMA : Testing... 10. So I've been happily using my shiny 1TB Samsung SpinPoint for some three months until I found out some bad sectors yesterday. Yuck. I did some reading about the whole thing (not like I did not run into them as much as ten years ago, but still) and still not sure whether they are definitely physically "dead" or it's fixable. I don't think it's a problem of a shock or something because noone even touched the whole PC ever since I installed it - so under that logic I'd GUESS there is a chance to fix it _somehow_. BUT I also read that modern drives have some amount of spare sectors that aren't usually used, but other sectors that are found to be unreadable or otherwise "malfunctioning" are remapped into them, and when disc runs out of there spares, then and not before scandisk or other diagnostic tools report bad sectors somewhere. So what do you think?
  11. Personally I would NEVER buy a board with new chipset. It just isn't good idea at all. I remember I got P35-DS4 from GigaByte soon ater it came out. If I waited few months I'd get revision 2.1 with better layout and MUCH better cooling. And that's not even too much of an issue... Problems with bios, problems with something random not working with this or that/as intended... No thanks. I like to wait for technology to get polished by time And honestly as things are now I see absolutely no reason to buy anything new than P35-based board. Or wait, yes, one exception: if I wanted to use crossfire or stuff like that, because P35 "only" supports PCI-E 1.0 (I think).
  12. It might be very nice to mark new updates since last time in some different color - especially over time when the list gets a bit longer.
  13. **** necroing old threads nLite came a long way though...
  14. But, if you keep rebooting after emptying the prefetch folder, you should find that the booting is faster! *It takes at least a couple of reboots to notice.* **** placebo all over the place!! What was it Richelieu said? "A lie need only be repeated asufficient number of times in order for it to be believed"
  15. Oh man, that old placebo..... No, the trick is once Windows has recreated the prefetch files, leave them be afterwards. It's NOT a placebo. and your proof is...? Um... Then you don't read/google enough I'd say. I am not saying it increases performance in any dramatic way, but it doesn't decrease it a single bit at worst! So I wouldn't use any comments about it being a crap. If you don't like it, simply leave it be. It doesn't do you any harm. And you don't know how Windows work on the inside anyway, so... It's amazing what theories people came out with over time
  16. I think you are using way too many exclamation points. Also I don't understand the point of this thread at all. You don't know how to update a driver under XP?
  17. After seeing a video of phone call making a piece of popcorn crack, I got my doubts. Also, someone once told me that a car from local phone company parked in fron of their house and they pulled out some kind of portable antenna (or how to call it). It was a huge drama afterward, because someone called um... how to call it. That kind of institution that checks all kinds of stuff that can or do have an impact on health. The guys from the company were almost torn apart by them.
  18. I assume this has been discussed about as many times as Intel vs AMD But anyway. On monday I'm supposed to do an interview for a job. That would be not unusual, only that I live in central Europe and the company is american and the possible "boss" is, surprise, an American. So I was told the interview will be a "simple" phone call... about on hour long. As much as I don't suffer from this kind of paranoia (like omfg don't use microwave oven, it causes cancer and similar sh**), I don't like it. It's pretty strong radiation and most of us saw various experimens with cell phones and what it can do. So what do you think?
  19. Tried downloading Nero 8 Lite/Micro, english version, and always getting "file not found". Hum...
  20. I was wondering, when it comes to the basic burning software, what's the difference between Nero 7 and 8?
  21. Yup, I was pretty shocked seeing 1GB/s bandwidth increase for write. Who would have thought... Too bad I can't go higher on frequency as CPU wouldn't be stable afterwards Too bad the E8x00 series raised in price repeatedly around here recently. Maybe I can try increasing voltage for the memory from 2.2V to 2.3 and see what timigs I could end up with
