  1. Don't the last 512 Megs start from A0000000? Originally you had Cyrillic "A" there.
  2. As long as the motherboard is completely supported (up to i915 inclusive) I will install win98SE on every computer I build. Video and audio drivers don't count.
  3. This has nothing to do with Vista, NT or 9x. You can use Total Commander to calculate directory sizes. All you have to do is press Spacebar on each required folder. Calculation can take considerable amount of time depending on number of files and fragmentation. So it would not be a good idea to do that automatically. Total Commander is an advanced file manager for Win95/98/NT/XP/Vista. There's even a version for Win3.11 available.
  4. You are right about that, without the cookie you're just redirected to the first page and must enter your Serial. At first I didn't bother to edit my post. The actual EXE download link also looks pretty "secure". But why this crap? The OEM installer is no good for piracy.
  5. In fact both OSes can live together on a single partition, even sharing the same Program Files could be possible in certain cases. And a complete reinstall of XP is not necessary at all. Just after the NT bootsector has been written you can return your old XP files (it would have been wise if you have installed XP to \WINNT before, but not necessary).
  6. First of all, in Nero you should enable "Generate Short Lead-Out".
  7. I've received a legal OEM Office 2007 license today with the PC I bought for my company. Since it's a business entity everything has to be legal (up to getting used to the 2007's new interface). I didn't bother checking what MLK means before the purchase. To a great surprise there was no disk in the Office 2k7 DVD case. In fact I do not need to stockpile these discs and it would be great to reduce cost and purchase a printed key only. But isn't it utterly stupid to ship a case with no CD inside? Pressed CDs are very cheap, even an OEM mouse today ships with a disk. I am currently downloading a "backup disc". I also have Volume License Key disks. Could the full Office 2007 be installed and partially activated with the OEM key making "backup disks" unnecessary? Backup disk downloads are available for 30 days after purchase and 7 download attempts are allowed. I do not know if they actually check somehow. http://www.microsoft.com/office/backup/en-us/default.mspx Edit: Office Basic installed properly using the first disc. Discs come as self extracting cabinets and don't work if manually unpacked.
  8. I'm sorry I don't have anymore suggestions, other than running an Unicode search for "AutoCAD" and "AutoDesk" over the registry and the whole Windows directory.
  9. Most files in %windir%\Installer have a hexadecimal number as their name, so you can't search for "autocad" and find the right files. A MSI file should display another property page after you rightclick and choose Properties. There you can see what company or program the specific file belongs to.
  10. These MSIs usually leave behind one or more packages in %windir%\Installer. If there is a file mentioning "autocad" in properties, delete it.
  11. Nero 7 indeed does not work. However, recent versions of Nero have concentrated on 'multimedia experience' (video encoding, everything-MP4, fat media players). Burning has not changed considerably since v6. There is a ready installer of Nero 7 Lite if you really need it for some reason. Instead of compressing NERO.EXE right away, first have it deprotected (there is a tutorial somewhere on the Internet) and delete unused Bitmaps from it using Resource Hacker. Under Windows 98 you'll also need to copy NEROCD95.VXD to IoSubSys directory and reboot, otherwise Nero will display a msg on every startup. Also some of these registry values might be required for audio en/decoding to work. Here's the complete REG-file I have to install Lite Nero (12.5 MB). REGEDIT4 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ahead\Nero - Burning Rom\Info] "User"="" "Company"="" ;; HIDDEN BECAUSE OF MSFN RULES "Serial6"="0000-0000-0000-0000-0000-0000" ;; REPLACE THESE PATHS [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ahead\Shared] "AudioPlugIn"="d:\\apps\\nero\\CommonFiles\\AudioPlugins\\" "NeroAPI"="D:\\apps\\nero\\Nero" "Lib"="d:\\apps\\nero\\Common Files\\" "AudioPluginManager"="D:\\apps\\nero\\Nero\\" "OutputPath"="D:\\apps\\nero7\\Nero 7\\Core\\MyMusic" "EnabledOffers"=dword:0000000f
  12. EDIT: Please delete this offtopic thread. It was indeed one of the hard drives.
  13. That does not make sense on a CRT monitor. Maybe color convergence is off on that display. This would make text extremely difficult to read. DELLs should have controls for aligning the colors. If you previously have reset all settings on the monitor, most likely also convergence correction values were dropped.
  14. I haven't tried safe mode. The problem manifests itself after the computer has worked for some time. Didn't want to take the computer offline for that long. The Event Viewer is full of "disk" Warnings, and "i8042prt" messages under System. They have the times of about when the problem last appeared. No properties are available. Maybe it's because my system is heavily nLite'd. A failing harddisk?
  15. I'm not sure in which subforum would this issue fit actually. I am running WinXP SP1. Recently my server computer (always on) started acting up. Occasionaly it locks up for few seconds so that nothing works – no mouse input, no audio playback, as if time suddenly stood still for my machine. In a few seconds the computer resumes and works normally for 10 or 20 seconds; then it pauses again, etc. After I quit two heavy applications: Direct Connect and eMule the problem disappears. But soon after those programs are launched again the trouble comes back. This configuration (OS + apps + same hardware) worked flawlessly before for weeks w/o reboot. I can't guess what I did wrong. Only major changes I performed was set the priority to "System cache" and "Background services" in System CPL applet. I also ran a couple of programs that were in High priority and consumed all CPU for a few hours, before I noticed. I noticed a similar effect on my other computer running same set of software. On a few occasions a single virtual core (Hyperthreading P4) would consume 100% cpu; mouse pauses for a moment once about every 4 seconds. It happened only a couple of times, but that comp does not run for more than 10h ever. Has anybody seen this? Any explanations?

  17. - Paint Shop Pro 7 (for editing) - IrfanView (for viewing). - ACDSee 3.0 (for viewing on slow old computers) Looks like I'm gonna learn basic operations in CorelDraw 9.
  18. Windows will later require the CD every time you touch the network settings, just press Cancel. But the first time you really need the CD. Doesn't SE CD work? See your PM box. Why do you expect this to display higher resolutions than 640*480? @ ShadeTreeLee You can try HzTool, an application for Windows 98, which allows to save refresh rates for every resolution, so you can have higher "Optimal" frequency for say 800*600 and lower "adapter default" for 1024*768. You can adjust refresh rates without switching to the respective (perhaps unsupported) resolutions at any time. This application will not work under WinNT.
  19. This requirement is most likely set by your installer. Can you install the modem driver by unpacking it and selecting its INF via control panel?

    Icons

You need an icon editing software, such as ArtIcons. It is critical to have all common icon sizes in one file, the most commonly used sizes (apart from XP/Vista/Nero7 nightmare) are 16x16 (Explorer detail's view) and 32x32. To import an icon into an exe file, you need Resource Hacker. Take care and test your program with the modifications. To change Explorer shell icons, such as My Computer, Directory, and Hard Disk, you need to edit the Registry. Various software exists for changing these icons, but all they do is edit this same registry key. I've used this valued in this key to restore the original sharp icons in WinXP. 21. Does DOS work in your configuration with more than ~800 MB of RAM? Although on my machine Win98SE booted successfully with 0x40000, DOS box could not be started.
  22. Thank you. I installed "Hide OE" and it seems to do the job.
  23. I believe there is no difference between this subforum and its parent. Both forums should be merged.
  24. i915P appears to support Win98SE too. (i915G might work w/o the crap graphics controller.) I have good experience with ATI X300/X550 on PCI-E bus. Others listed on Catalyst's release notes page might work.
  25. My colleague is using Outlook Express that comes with MSIE 6. She asked me if it is possible to enable a tray icon that changes as new messages arrive in inbox. She claims that in the old configuration before reinstall there was this functionality. I couldn't figure out if you can do that in Outlook Express, because I am not using it myself due to security reasons (nLite'd out for good). Is it possible?
