The hate for the Ribbon toolbar died quickly. I remember how initially there was even a paid add-on to put a normal toolbar into Office. I don't even have Office 2010; it is fairly chunky. My operating system is Windows 2008 R2, so those updates are not applicable. Well, I hope it can at least recover some text that I can reformat if needed. My only other alternative is Office on a Xiaomi smartphone, which can open X and save to another format. I don't even get how that program could be used productively.

I had a compatibility pack v4 from 2009 and was unable to open this example file. Registering ole32.dll didn't resolve the problem. The event log has a report saying that Wordconv.exe had crashed every time I try to open a DOCX. Unfortunately on my system crashes are silent like that. Installing this older compatibility pack v2 from 2006 was sucessful. I can now open the files I have on hand including this test file with my avatar. I do remember this pack v4 actually working because it is the only one I have. But that was on 32-bit WinXP. I was not able to open a new thread in this forum, which I initially wanted to do. I remember that was discussed some months ago. The error from the forum was "something went wrong".

I have installed Office 2000 SP-3 and the XML format compatibility pack for opening DOCX and XLSX files. The operating system is 2008 R2 x64. Lately this setup cannot open anything. I remember it worked in the past, but I used it very rarely. "There was an error opening file." from Microsoft Word. Has the DOCX format changed recently or is my installation broken? What is the talk of updates here? Can I get a new version that works?

So it seems to work again without resorting to the Safari HLS method despite showing an error "nsig extraction failed". It downloads anyway and in h.264 not in VP9. One positive from the Safari method is that it yields one video+audio file instead of two.

Takes ages for them to fix uncommon codecs like gapless playback in audio files, E-AC-3 glitch. If it was a project focused on one codec the maintainer would work on it or declare it abandoned. When you transcode you have to explicitly supply an output bit depth. And of course the sheer size that you don't need for audio transcoding (expected about 200-500K). Since they don't fix bugs (that I care about), and I don't need the new video codecs, old ffmpeg 7 works just fine for me.

I watched my first video in a couple days. This works. -f 96,96-0 --extractor-args "youtube:player_client=web_safari" Some of the formats are in other languages. I wonder how it works if it is an AI speech synthesizer and the author gives it the text, or if the voice is entirely supplied by the author which would be a lot of work.

Ffmpeg has grown to be absolutely ginormous. I remember how they used to have their own encoders for h.264 and h.262 with shared parts. The new encoders are far too slow, and more encoders keep getting invented. If I needed video, I would use x264 instead. Some people actively promote ffmpeg as a solution for all, but it kinda tries to be a jack of all trades and not the best. I don't see a use for ffmpeg for YouTube downloads. So what is new? How do we rip today? What numbers to use for Safari HLS?

Today downloads give 403 Forbidden. I updated to the last version here. I can get something from Safari HLS, but the format numbers seem to not be always the same.

I have not witnessed the extremely poor quality again. A live 1920*1080 video with motion is now around 3700 kbit/s. It is still low but in the ballpark of what to expect online. zBq_krhKbW4 (static scene with a speaking person and illustrations) is about 850 kbit/s in "TV-S", and I perceive it as soft and washed out.

yt-dlp_win7.exe is the usual one. What is the advantage of using yt-dlp_win7.zip with extracted libraries to _internal? How long does it take to prepare more than a dozen builds for an update?

Since there now a separate, required build for Windows 7, can you please add a small link in the signature? So far no problems.

Those devices might work since there is no discrete sound card or other multimedia device, but might not given that there is no official Server available and they haven't had to proof their drivers for it. You can see how the block C000 0000 to E1FF FFFF (256+256+32 MB) is reserved for video in addition to others. There seem to be two video cards active.

Where does the kernel come from if Server R2 is only 64-bit?

That depends on the devices you have plugged into your computer. Like a video adapter might map around 300 MB to it. Other PCI cards get some. The consumers can be found in the device manager (View -> Resourced by type, Memory). So you can only get more memory by not having a good video card, which is not fun. There is no 32-bit Windows Server anymore, so that is not a possible path. It is either Windows NT 6.1 x64, or, Server 2003/2008 with PAE (not R2 but "Vista").

The SABR thing comes and goes. At the moment downloading works. I can't get anything from the safari HSL method from most videos using the format number that previously worked. I wonder how is it in Google's interest to maintain this multitude of formats. Imagine how many videos they have and now have to devote several times the storage space on their cloud. They could just have h.264 or 3 or so bitrates and it would work great.

I hear that you want to use the safari HLS. But what is the benefit of it? A backup when the tv client stops working? The file sizes I am getting are similar to normal download. Google is throwing a new rock into the works. I am getting 403 Forbidden after 10 MB is downloaded with Win7 DLP (pee). Had to update today because nothing was working at all, only a bunch of errors. Seems that the standard build from the signature of yt-dlp (pee) no longer works on Windows 2008 R2. I had to get the Windows 7 build. GetCPFileNameFromRegistry could not be located in the dynamic link library kernel32.dll

Changing BIOS settings is not the same as "reflashing" the BIOS, which shouldn't be needed after changing the battery. Or does it now? Do most drives require AHCI? I've only found this with one drive that was extremely slow in compatibility mode (5 MB/s) because it didn't fully implement Ultra DMA.

I am using DLP 2025-08-20. SABR has gone away again for now and downloads work. It is not great that I need to wait some 10-20 seconds to see if download would start, but what can you do. I haven't seen very poor video quality again recently.
