  1. Just to add, that for me at any rate (with 6200) the previous 81.98 driver is better, for the reason given. Have reverted to it.
  2. XFX 6200 graphics card with 512MB video RAM; 98SE2ME + most other upgrades: With one proviso (last sentence below) it works fine @ 1024 x 768; 32 bit; 85 Hz on my 17 inch monitor (CRT). As with previous 81.98 driver, am unable to get greater than 85 Hz, though when I boot (dual boot) to XP can get stable 100 HZ. Had hoped that this version would likewise give 100 Hz for win98SE. Unfortunately I cannot get large font (Advanced tab) with 82.69. I could with 81.98. I can set large font but on reboot it still shows small font.
  3. Does this means you are removing USER*.* 4.90.3001 from 98SE2ME? Good question. But whatever MDGx decides, based on the facts already given I deduce: a) If you want a permanent fix, get rid of the TSR-based U891711 stuff, (recommended for 98SE2ME users) then do the permanent fix. B) If you have already done U891711 + 98SE2ME and now do nothing, there's no harm. You're still protected. What I don't know is that, ignoring above, whether there are any inherent advantages to using USER*.* 4.90.3001?
  4. The versions of the fixed user.exe + user32.dll are 4.10.22.33. These are in fact *older* than the ones which existed on my system, 4.90.3001, which were there by doing (I guess) the 98SE2ME upgrade. But it's better to have a permanent fix. So (1) Uninstall the temporary U891711 first (using add/remove programs); (2) Install new permanent fix even though the file versions are older, than those installed by 98SE2ME. Is above correct?
  5. <snip> It is not necessary to uninstall anything, because 98SE2ME is always a full install package, and always performs the same full install which also include all current changes/updates [in this case the only changes are installing WinME SIGVERIF.EXE renamed file, WinME SIGVERIF.HLP + 2 shortcuts]. Just run the current 98SE2ME.EXE 4-28-2007edition, as usual [3 MB]: http://www.mdgx.com/4 and install option 1 or 2. That's it. This will copy SIGVERIF.EXE from WinME CABs to %windir% as SIGVRFME.EXE, in order to keep Win98 SE SIGVERIF.EXE . After reboot, you can run either 1 of these tools from their shortcuts: ... excerpt from UPDATES.TXT [4-28-2007 update]:UPDATES.TXT HTH First and foremost, many thanks for this great program. Feedback: Couple of things. (1) Installing 98SE2ME again broke the NUSB. OK, you kind of mention that in the readme, but would it be possible to prompt the user during the install to first uninstall NUSB and make sure it's around to install afterwards? (2) I play FLV files using Media Player Classic. The procedure to do so involves installing FFD Show and configuring the player. (See http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/ho..._flv_files.cfm). I had done this procedure subsequent to when 98SE2ME was first installed. Just a few minutes ago I installed 98SE2ME again and Media Player Classic is now broke for playing FLV files. I use Ghost 2003 and ghosted back to restore things as they were.
  6. Hi, this looks really promising! One question: What do I have to UNinstall first (if anything)? I already have 98SE2ME done some six months ago or so. Do I need to uninstall anything from that before doing the new one?
  7. Well done! Works fine here too.
  8. Has been updated April 3, 2007. SEE: http://www.cs.auckland.ac.nz/~pgut001/pubs...st.html#unified "Problems with drivers" section makes an interesting read.
  9. In light of your comments, thought you might be interested in this snippet: The NSA has said that "it has helped in the development of the security of Microsoft's new operating system", in order, it is said, " to protect it from worms, Trojan horses and other insidious computer attackers." What *precisely* they did is not told to us. Article here: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/conte...7010801352.html
  10. Can be found here. Look at links on left: http://www.dslreports.com/forum/kerio
  11. Does auto-patcher run on win98Se that has had win98 Lite applied? I tried it on such a PC yesterday. It unpacked all the files ok. When I ran the batch, a DOS box appeared for a fraction of a second and then the batch exited. No error messages or logs or anything.
  12. Tried again....and....Thanks a lot! Great solution. Just needed a fair bit of configuration for the codecs, - found a helpful (essential) online guide. Give a shout if anyone wants it posted. There's no lip sync problems and flash videos are easily navigated. Many thanks.
  13. Using VideoLAN player (http://www.videolan.org) on win98SE, equipped with updates including ME ones, I can play .flv files but cannot navigate in them. If you click on a later or earlier part of a .flv movie it resets back to the beginning. Don't have this problem on XP with the identical software. Wondering if anyone else can reproduce this problem and provide a solution. It doesn't matter for short video clips but for long videos it's annoying and awkward.
  14. Updated on 15 March 2007. Same URL. Quote: "If I do ever want to play back premium content, I'll wait a few years and then buy a $50 Chinese-made set-top player to do it, not a $1000 Windows PC. It's somewhat bizarre that I have to go to communist China in order to find vendors who actually understand the consumer's needs."
  15. Is this topic -- developing Firefox 3 for win98SE - going to have a dedicated website, or an enlarged forum for contributors? Newbies please note: Firefox 3 won't work on win98SE.
  16. Please stop with this rapidshare, there are at least one hundred free upload service better!!!! Phew! Second the opinion on [not] rapidshare. But, hey, thanks to maximus-decim for the great job he's doing! BTW what did wdmstub.sys do or otherwise to warrant its removal?
  17. Have you ever tried looking/asking on this NG. Found them very helpful over the years: alt.comp.freeware
  18. Apologies for posting in main forum...Basic question: I have NUSB 2 installed and am not quite sure as to what to uninstall before installing NUSB 3.0. Also, what are the advantages over NUSB 2.0. TIA Done. But please note there appears to be a problem with the usbstor.sys file. I needed to replace it with an older version (4.90.3000.1) before USB sticks would work. The one supplied with NUSB 3.0 (5.00.2195.6655) did *not* work. (Have 98SE2ME and 98SESP2 installed)

  20. Running v2 of NUSB with no problems on two different sticks. Is there any advantage to going to v3? I'm also not sure what to remove. Can anyone help out? (BTW since getting a 4GB USB stick I found that Ghost 2003 recognises it (in DOS mode!). so far I've backed up two partitions to it. Very handy too.)
  21. I get the same thing on my WinME + IE6 SP1 system with jscript.dll v5.7.0.5730 So it means that all our 9x systems are vulnerable to that nasty javascript exploit, no matter how well updated they are. NOT really, or only if you make a rod for your own back. I mean WHY use IE6? Just use Firefox. If you have to use IE5/6 then do so only on a trusted site.
  22. Has been updated February 18th. Makes a fascinating read: http://www.cs.auckland.ac.nz/~pgut001/pubs/vista_cost.html
  23. Yes, agreed. If one has invested a load of time to get your PC working great and everything works, why change? My win98SE boots up really fast and runs all the apps I want. I think that the question of software compatibility can be overstated. Let's hope that Firefox 3 can have a win98Se version developed by this group. That aside, look at all the multimedia and office stuff that *does* work great on win98SE (with all MDGx and others' updates!). There's a HUGE amount of software available that works just fine. And with eBay one can get good replacements still for most of the hardware, even if (when) they're no longer available from stores; e.g. Creative soundcards, graphics cards, etc.
  24. Seconded. Use AMD. Great results here with a 3100+ Sempron, but you can go higher if you wish :-) But take plenty of time thinking about motherboard. Critical and key decision folks. 1GB memory used. No problems with various tips on this Group and mdgx.com. Beware of /possible/ shutdown problems with Nvidia. Usually possible to fix, though; e.g. cut out nvcpl and services. I take issue with need for 6800 unless you really want high-end games. Hey, it's for office use, right? ;-) I use 6200 with passive heatsink (quiet). But don't use a "TC" or turbo charged one. A 6200 is more than adequate for office work, DVDs and a fair number of games, including Flight Simulator. And much lower price of course. ATI has gotten strong recommendations by this group, and has no shutdown problems AFAIK. See other postings by this group. HTH.
  25. Good luck to you BenoitRen! Let us all know when you have tacked on to a firefox website project, or set-up a web page. I guess there will be some way provided for others to comment/help-out?
