  1. A FREEWARE flight simulator. Very cool: http://www.flightgear.org/Downloads/binary.shtml#windows
  2. That doesn't matter one bit, as the proposed shim library idea was insufficient, and thus no specific code needs to get into the tree. Waiting for beta was actually sort of my intention, because it has to have stabilised first. I didn't look forward to experiencing all sorts of crashes, data loss and other stuff that goes on on the trunk and then figure out if it's because of Win9x patches or a core bug. Considering how anti-Win9x most Mozilla developers are, and that a shim library isn't sufficient, this is laughable. Reading through the thread on the link I posted, I tend to agree that there is a strong anti-Win9x prejudice. If I can help out with any donkey-work do send me a PM. Good luck!
  3. I found some stuff (a bit old) about FF3 and win98SE here: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=331723 More to the point, perhaps, here's some info I got today from the Firefox support group: "The reason why Win98 isn't supported is because it would require a lot _a lot_ of work to add support for it, even for experienced Firefox & Windows developers. "If you or your group are willing to do the work, there is AFAIK no reason why it couldn't be supported, but I'm afraid you are already too late for Firefox 3 as they have already released beta. You could get support for the next version, assuming you are able to write the patch fast enough. "You would probably get help from the developers also. But I seriously suggest that you first study how big task this is. "If you wonder why Firefox 2 works, but Firefox 3 doesn't. The reason is within the changes to the core of the Firefox. Firefox 3 uses Cairo, which doesn't work in Win98, due to lack of API functions that are available on more modern operating systems." So there's some positive stuff to follow-up on mixed in with the negative. I only wish I had the programming skills to do this...Could anyone elect to follow-up on it and keep us informed?
  4. Best place to ask questions of this kind is the Firefox support group -- BTW this has been asked many many times. Fire-up your newsreader (or install Thunderbird freeware) and head for: mozilla.support.firefox newsgroup. on server address: 216.196.97.169
  5. Anyone doing anything to get firefox 3 / win98SE compatibility?
  6. WEB BROWSING PRIVACY IMPROVER Filters out loads of advert garbage and other hidden things in web pages. Works great with Firefox and win98SE. Freeware. "Privoxy is a web proxy with advanced filtering capabilities for protecting privacy, modifying web page data, managing cookies, controlling access, and removing ads, banners, pop-ups and other obnoxious Internet junk. Privoxy has a very flexible configuration and can be customized to suit individual needs and tastes. Privoxy has application for both stand-alone systems and multi-user networks." 7. You should have installed WMP9UPR9X first and then 98MP10, RetroOS. OR UN-install 98MP10 and reinstall WMP9 and WMP9URP9X. Next time, remember that. anyways, re-installing 98MP10 solved your problem. WMP9URP9X was designed to update the original release of WMP9 under Win98se & WinME, meaning without any unofficial addons like 98MP10. 98MP10 was created by MDGx while WMP9URP9X is my creation. I may release an updated version of WMP9URP9X that will NOT install under Win98se with 98MP10 installed. WMP9URP9X does NOT really support 98MP10 and vice-versa. having both WMP9URP9X and 98MP10 addons installed may cause other problems that I don't know of and I have not really tested 98MP10 on any Win98se machine with WMP9 installed. no probs, dencorso. I've already sent the english and italian Q301453 patches for Win98 to MDGx. Thanks again for the Q301453 patch for WinME. Umm...I did the same thing...made the same mistake.... So, yes, probably a good idea if you can to prevent WMP9URP9X from installing under Win98se if 98MP10 installed.
  8. The HP offers drivers for Windows 98. But, it is called a "driver bundle" and it is located in the Windows 2000 and XP sections. Here's a site which has a number of win3.1 and win95/98 drivers for HP printers. By no means complete but there's quite a few there. http://www.filelibrary.com/ Easiest way to find one is to search on site. Anyone know of other non-manufacturer owned sites for printer drivers?
  9. I've found small subset of Windows 9x drivers here: http://admin.utep.edu/Default.aspx?tabid=56 Cheers, Roman Hi there, This link may give you what you're looking for: ttp://www.opendrivers.com/categorycompany/13/11712/printers-hp-free-driver-download.html HTH.
  10. Thanks. reading through this long thread i notice an important contradiction: Some say it's only the partition size that is an issue, others that that is incorrect; it's not the partition size but the total size of the HDD. Go beyond the 137GB boundary, and without the patch you'll have deeze problemos. Humm. Guess the latter is really the issue. Many thanks for the info.
  11. Many thanks. I'm fairly new to this part of the Forum; hopefully these questions will be of use to others as well: 1. If I go from a small HDD to (say) a new 320GB HDD, will the full size be recognised by win98SE, assuming BIOS support only? 2. Assuming it isn't, and one then installs the patch, is the full size then recognised? Or, what happens? 3. Has this patch ben proven to be successful?
  12. I really get lost in this thread. Could someone point me in the right direction please? I'm looking for this 137GB patch for PC.
  13. OK guys a couple of nifty FREEWARe programs that work great on win98SE. I've suggested some download links. do a google search for the programs if you have trouble: (1) FTP program. It's very fast: Leech FTP v1.3 Freeware http://www.download.com/3000-2356-10122208.html (2) RegCleaner 4.3.0.780 http://majorgeeks.com/download460.html
  14. Yes it works well for me on firefox. I'd like to get the enhanced ("unlimited") security files. Evidently they can be downloaded with the JDK (java development kit) but haven't yet found them. What is installed is limited 128 bit encryption. It's probably a good idea to go with this version as it has fixed some security bugs.
  15. I can confirm that since using maximum MaxFileCache on my 1GB RAM win98SE PC, the following have been noticed: * Faster operation (intuitive feel) * Hardly any disk caching activity when using firefox and other memory "keen" apps * No shut-down problems (sometimes had these) [vcache] MaxFileCache=522240 MaxPhysPage=40000 [386Enh] ... MaxPhysPage=40000 MinSPs=16 ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1 DMABufferSize=64
  16. Only really useful if one can still get the software. Would it be allowable under the forum rules to post the software (assuming the licence allows it of course)?
  17. <snip the rant> And besides, what's the point of reviving Windows 98 this late in the game anyway? That's like bringing back my grandpa so he can live for another year just to die again! The inevitable is here. Windows 98 is on it's way out! No task force can change that! So, yes...it's time to move on, as you said! That's what I was told two years ago! Untrue then as now methinks. For here I am still using it and thanking every moment that there's user control over: -- hard disk (wow, you can actually directly access hard disk with win98SE) -- who I connect to (no forced connection to M$ for updates, "checking") -- software I like (yep it runs on win98SE!) -- keeping off software and processes one doesn't want ...and so on. NO in my book it's not time to "move on". And is it really "Move ON" or is it "Being pushed to where one doesn't really like to go"? THANKS to this group, the updates, SE2ME, NUSB and a bunch of other really useful stuff, many have found "Hey I like it where I am", and are jolly well going to stay there for as long as possible. RP7 is there to use or not as the case may be.
  18. Thanks for this info. I have been following this thread with interest, and have tried various settings. I have 1GB RAM and also have under [386Enh]: MaxPhysPage=40000 MinSPs=16 ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1 DMABufferSize=64 WITHOUT DOUBT the setting that has worked best under [vcache] -- that makes most use of the 1GB RAM fitted -- is this: MaxFileCache=522240 MaxPhysPage=40000 So, I think that's good advice (above). I found that other settings, such as limiting MaxFileCache didn't take advantage of the 1GB RAM (which often still had 700MB left after several hours of working. Now, at last, most of the 1GB is getting used.
  19. Yes. Skype for Windows - Business version (with MSI) Latest 3.2.32.175 http://www.skype.com/download/skype/windows/business.html Only correct regedit: For permanent change start language: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Skype\Phone\UI\General] "Language"="en" to [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Skype\Phone\UI\General] "Language"="cs" Hi, I guess it worked ok for you? I tried it. It installed well but speech kept breaking up. so went back to the old one (posted version above), and it worked fine.
  20. Hi, funny i was going to post about Skype yesterday but thought no one would be interested... ANYWAY, I've used this version with win98SE and it worked fine (1.4.0.84). It's just over 7MB.
  21. Ok, here is some definitive stuff from a guy called Alan Baxter who evidently runs the current development version of Fx 3.0, Gecko/2007092705 Minefield/3.0a9pre. QUOTE: "It implements the antiphishing feature in the same manner as Fx 2.0, i.e. it gives the user a choice between using a downloaded list of suspected sites or asking Google about each site you visit. The default is still using the downloaded list instead of asking Google each time. I don't know if there are any plans to change that before Fx 3.0 is released in a few months." So I guess...we still don't know for sure as far as the final release is concerned.
  22. Ok, this is what I found out. (1) The normal firefox gurus on firefox support group haven't been able to add much to what has already been said. It seems that there's a genuine element of doubt as to precisely what this 'feature' will entail (but see following). (2) FF3 is certainly looking very interesting in its other features and I hope someone will be able to port it to win98SE. Good discussion of features here: http://mozillalinks.org/wp/2007/09/firefox-3-alpha-8-review/ (3) The above link links to this stuff, quoted under fair use: [my comments in parenthesis]: * Firefox 2’s anti-phishing is not Google exclusive. It has the necessary hooks for other providers to offer their lists and integrate with it. Unfortunately, no other provider like Netcraft or McAfee has done so. Which is sad as it not only would bring choice for users but would also be a business opportunity for them. Mozilla can’t do much about it other that [sic.] work with those interested. * Firefox 3 will have an anti-malware protection [note: 'anti-malware' is the new game. It remains to be seen how commercialised and possibly regulated this area becomes] that will work exactly the same way as anti-phishing sites with Google as a provider. So you can be as concerned or unconcerned about it as you currently are. This is the no news part. * Mozilla is in talks with stopbadware.org, an independent [??] malware fighting association that includes Google, Sun Microsystems, Lenovo, Oxford and Harvard universities and Consumer Reports WebWatch, to include it as another provider. Its Privacy Policy suggests submitted reports and queries stay at stopbadware.org. [O! That's all right then!] At least it doesn’t say something like “we can share it with partners and members…”.
  23. "The difference appears to be that while FF2 periodically downloads a list from google, FF3 uploads every URL you visit. The feature itself may not be new, but the implementation certainly seems to be." Trying to get further clarification. Long discussion here: SEE: http://yro.slashdot.org/yro/07/09/25/1622229.shtml Note: (1) Anyone who uses the Google Toolbar extension for their web browser (available for Firefox) and enables the PageRank function will be querying Google for the PageRank of every webpage they visit. (2) Use this freeware tool for more privacy on your google searches: http://mrl.nyu.edu/~dhowe/TrackMeNot/ "TrackMeNot is a lightweight browser extension that helps protect web searchers from surveillance and data-profiling by search engines. It does so not by means of concealment or encryption (i.e. covering one's tracks), but instead, paradoxically, by the opposite strategy: noise and obfuscation. With TrackMeNot, actual web searches, lost in a cloud of false leads, are essentially hidden in plain view. User-installed TrackMeNot works with the Firefox Browser and popular search engines (AOL, Yahoo!, Google, and MSN) and requires no 3rd-party servers or services."
  24. "THE FORTHCOMING version of the Firefox browser, Gran Paradiso, will ship with a function that will tell Google all about your browsing habits. The feature is supposed to be designed to allow the browser to check the URL against a list of phishing sites which is stored at Google. The downside is that while the punter gets some form of malware protection, Google is getting shedloads of information on the sorts of sites you are visiting." Full story here: http://www.prisonplanet.com/articles/septe...0907Firefox.htm Caveat is that the 'feature' is meant to be disabled by default. So that's all right, then? If anyone here is developing FF3 for win98SE, please let's not only disable this feature, but obliterate it!
  25. There's a thread (somewhere) on FF3 but I thought i'd just post on this comment from awergh. Of course, you're right to a point. But what if one doesn't like Opera? I'm not sure that it has all the plug-ins and emulations possible with FF. I use TrackMeNot and a number of add-on goodies with FF that I've simply not seen with Opera. Bottom line: FF is definitely preferred. SO here's hoping FF3 will be available with win98 with the help of the project? As for IE, I think it's a non-issue. Best not use at all IMO.
