  1. Gave your new UberKern beta a try with FF3-b5. And ... seems ok Anything you'd like me to try in particular? Maybe PM if yes. Many thanks again, for all your efforts!
  2. Are you sure you put in "savedreg.reg" (or the filename you exported your registry key to) in Autoexec.bat? Use REGEDIT /S C:\yourfile.reg Where yourfile.reg is your saved registry modification, which must reside in the root of your C drive. !!! DOS can't work with filenames larger than 8 characters, so make sure <yourfile>'s name is at most 8 characters, and has the .reg extension. !!! Why do you say it's a hair-raising experience? Working with DOS is cool. It can run a ton of classic games and can get you out of impossible situations without reinstalling windoze. Of course you can run it in windoze, but you'll get that annoying "are you sure you want to add blah blah" prompt every time you start up your computer... About my name, dunno, it's been like that for a few years. Thought it looks cool. Yes, that's one of the great things about win98SE - DOS. You can really take control of your PC in a way which isn't always possible with later OSes. Learn the incredible power of batch files, for instance (do Google) But i digress. If you're not happy working with Regedit, then it might be best to leave well alone, or send PM for detailed but "at your own risk" advice.
  3. Can you tell me how, Th3_uN1Qu3? Thank you for replying.(Why do you write your name so strange?) Hi there. Use regedit in win98SE mode first to export the registry setting you want to keep. Say C:\savedreg.reg. Then reboot into DOS, and use Regedit in real mode to import it back into the Registry. Once you're happy that it's doing what you want, automate the importing via suitable command in autoexec.bat. To review the real mode Registry Editor switches type REGEDIT /? at the command prompt.
  4. Thanks for the info! Was thinking of building another PC and Via has been pretty reliable in the past. I also see that the MOBO has ATA-133 so one could use older hard drive if required. Are you using the NUSB stuff available from this forum on it ok?
  5. Now about this original thread's title.... I've been out and about on a few other forums lately spreading and on one had some feedback which all more or less said the same thing. Thought this one might be of interest to the folks here: "I very much prefer to use Win98SE over XP. I have both, but my 98SE systems tend to perform a lot smoother and faster." (If you want to read it in the original please PM me for link. ,,Tut tut doubting my word ) So let's here it for win98SE
  6. Also counts when one bit is changed. It doesn´t matter how much it´s changed to say... There is absolutely no alteration, not even one bit, to the source code. It's just a wrapper, that's all. AFAICT not one person of official standing on the Firefox support group thinks there's anything even remotely not legal about this. Also they tell me it's been done before (a wrapper I mean) in a non-win98Se context, and that was perfectly legal it seems. HTH
  7. <snip>If the FF people (an actual FF dev or a spokesperson) says you can make the binaries portable in this manner, then I don't think there will be any more noise from the mods here about it. Short of that, it's still in limbo. However, we've decided not to take any further actions with regards to this project, until there's word from the Firefox team directly on how they want to address it (if at all - again, this may be perfectly OK). <snip> From the mozilla.support.firefox Newsgroup: "An issue similar to this was just addressed in Navigator 9 where a user wrapped NN 9 into a portable version. There is/was no legal issue involved .. AND .. NN 9 isn't even open-source." -- Jay Garcia Netscape Champion UFAQ - http://www.UFAQ.org Also from another person: "if it's just wrapping a binary from Mozilla, I don't think there's any problem with calling the browser itself Firefox. Naming the wrapper may be a stickier issue. I'm not a lawyer, so I won't hazard an opinion. You might want to read some of the documents linked from <http://www.mozilla.org/foundation/trademarks/index.html>. There's also an e-mail address for trademark questions at the bottom of the page." Please see the whole thread at at the Newsgroup server 216.196.97.169 port 119 under "Firefox 3 on win98SE platform". The naming /might/ be an issue. One experienced guy on that forum made the comment: "...They [the Mozilla Foundation] may view this as a new Mozilla based product that should have an independent name." On the other hand the Mozilla Foundation might not. Has anyone asked them? Anyway if it's just a question of naming the wrapper it can probably easily be resolved. As a matter of fact TiHiy always /did/ call the wrapper by another name, i.e. not Firefox; so there probably never was an issue. Finally, to be perfectly candid with you, I hope that I'm not being a little too innocent here. And that behind all this (perhaps) understandable hesitancy on your part there is not a certain commercial entity which might not wish to see this solution advanced, and thus extend the effective usefulness of an "old" OS (?)
  8. "An issue similar to this was just addressed in Navigator 9 where a user wrapped NN 9 into a portable version. There is/was no legal issue involved .. AND .. NN 9 isn't even open-source." This is from the above stated Newsgroup by an officially recognised Netscape Champion. Whilst the permanent blocking of the FF3 thread is one thing, this is another. THERE IS NO LEGAL ISSUE INVOLVED. Go visit the entire thread for yourself to check it out. I guess if anyone is seriously interested in developing FF3 for win98SE this MSFN Forum is probably not the place? But AFAICT there is no reason for it not to proceed.
  9. Been using it for the past 24 hours on and off. No real troubles. FF3 locked up just once but that could easily have been the browser. It is a beta after all. Hopefully someone is still looking into the naming issue, if there is one that is. Separate from this forum I'm in touch with some of the FF3 development guys so if i come across any definite positive info I'll flag it up in a new thread here, admin permitting of course. Course of action is very good . You can see the feedback to date here, in this Newsgroup if you are interested: mozilla.support.firefox on server 216.916.97.169 port 119. Thanks. BTW These are really nice guys, been around in that forum for over 10 years now...Interesting to note how polite they are in addressing differences of opinion... Cluberti, would you address the "stopped" Firefox 3 thread soon, please; one way or the other. At least everyone would then know where we stood. I sincerely hope common sense will prevail. This is, after all freeware and open source we're talking about. One wonders sometimes...

  11. So I guess it needs: -- some good webserver -- a project leader to make it all happen -- some cash! I could offer a little in the third department, and/or maybe someone with a decent existing win98Se oriented website could volunteer. One project surely must be (ahem) let it be called Open-Source Browser development for win98SE/ME.
  12. It would be nice to hear some positive suggestions from you as to: (1) How you think this project can be continued (2) That you intend to invite Tihiy back ASAP. Leaving aside my personal distaste as to how this matter has been handled, I really do think that by your actions you have probably killed the project off, at least as far as this forum. (I hope i am proven wrong). Tihiy, if you're reading this and want some funds to continue this project, e.g. to set up a website, elsewhere, and use that instead of this Orwellian-controlled forum, just let me know. Hopefully some others will contribute also. Hey! All that's needed is a suitable webpage or two. Google et al will soon identify it to the 98SE punters out there!
  13. Unfortunately, sir, laughter is not the emotion I feel by your actions in unilaterally suspending Tihiy and deleting whole tranches of posts. What is it about using scorn to deflect attention from issues?
  14. If anything, we could do what Debian had to do, and rename Firefox to something else. Or maybe we can just piggyback on the already existing "IceCat" name. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iceweasel http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNU_IceCat Links you gave were quite informative. Maybe they point a way forward. But it's been known for months what the Frefox in win98Se project on this forum was all about. Not a whisper or hint of complaint ("legal" or otherwise). But now that there is (was) something that actually works; ... O well, that's a different story it seems. However, I still think that out of politeness for the multiple hours of work that have gone into this project, the forum members deserve something better than just a vague reference to "legal" issues. Who has complained? Why? What is the real issue, here? We do, they are set on hold, not deleted. As we speak, the staff has come together about this issue, not only about Tihiy attitude but also about breaking the "rights" in other projects. I suspended Tihiy for 3 days, after that MSFN will see what can and will be done. Let me clear one thing, it´s not about misuse of authority here, It´s NEVER personal. At the risk, presumably, of being suspended myself, for having the temerity to ask a question of you, I must say that I am forensically puzzled as to how the statements "Tihiy attitude" and "It's NEVER personal" can be cogently and rationally reconciled. Say he was a little upset (I don't know) perhaps you might care to show a bit of humanity for him and reflect on the many, many, hours he has put into this project? Don't you think even you would be upset? Folks, if my thread also vanishes into the ether, aka Winston and Orwell's 1984, at least you will know why! b77alpha (at) beeb.net
  15. If anything, we could do what Debian had to do, and rename Firefox to something else. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iceweasel What, O what has happened to Tihiy's Uberkern thread? Looks like the whole thing has vanished If this is some kind of "officialdom" at least let us know, please? And if Tihiy is reading this, perhaps he could send me a PM.
  16. Pentium 3 (P866) 98SE2ME KenelEx033e Win98Lite Fantastic! Installed a treat. Added "Firefox Setup 3.0 Beta 5.exe=win2000" (without inverted commas) into [PerApp] of kexver.ini. So this message comes via FF3! No problems as yet. I think Thihy has done a tremendous job here and hopefully more people will be encouraged now to give it a try, and so spread the feedback for any needed improvements.
  17. Thanks for getting back. I can unpack it, -- uberkern and kernelex. I was referring to the installer-unpacker of the Firefox Setup 3.0 Beta 5.exe program. I was presuming that it unpacks in c:\windows\temp which I think is correct. Anyway, the firefox setup just hung... BTW I'm using the latest 033e of kernelex. Anyway, i'll try later using the [perApp] setting you suggested and report back on what happened, hopefully with something positive to report! Thanks once again for all you great efforts!
  18. Athlon 3100+ 98SE2ME KernelEx033 Thanks for your hard work, Thihy! Thought I'd report this even though it's largely negative... Downloaded latest beta release of FF3. When i tried to install it, got it to unpack, but then it hangs. A few files installed and left in windows\temp. That's all. Experimented with different paths in KEXVER.INI but it didn't make any difference. Still won't install. alt+Ctrl+del showed "Setup not responding". Also showed Firefox Setup 3 but with no message. Anyway, unfortunately couldn't get it installed...Any tips to possibly get past this hurdle, Thihy? Will try later on an old pentium iii.
  19. Better to let sleeping dogs lie IMO. There's some guys who really hate folks that don't "upgrade"/go along with the sytem etc. They could make things difficult...
  20. Great news! Well done! Now we're all waiting to find out how :-)
  21. QUOTE: "there is a Diskeeper Lite 9 bundled with the Intel Desktop Utilities software package. v9 seems to remove those nag-screens. go here: http://www.intel.com/design/motherbd/softw...du/download.htm Download Intel Desktop Utilities version 2.1.9.66 (an 89meg size download) which features DK Lite 9 and some other tools." Downloaded and extracted Diskeeper. Clicked on the install .exe. After about 20 seconds replied with an error message about incompatible OS. Also the Readme says it's for XP not win98SE :-(
  22. I have an internal broadband network modem card, Connexant roadrunner. It works fine once windows 98se is running. But I have the problem that if I don't disable it before shutting down windows 98SE then on next boot i get BSOD. So I have to use Device Manager, 'disable' then after successful boot 'enable'. This is getting pretty tedious. Has anyone some suggestions? File drivers include NDIS.vxd, NDISWAN.vxd, CNXTGN.sys, CNXTGP.sys
  23. Couple of tips which /should/ help improve performance: http://macosxcocktail.blogs.com/cocktail/2...ve_firefox.html pipelining http://blog.taragana.com/index.php/archive...st-performance/ dns cache HTH.
  24. I only knew about 7300 so I hoped 7600 would be very similar and luckily it works. Did it install using 82.69 without you having to change the inf file? Any issues with this driver and the 7600?
