just for future compatibility & the remote desktop & assistance is just for cosmetic reasons! you could remove the client tho ps looks like b7229 has more packages than 7201?
-
i'll do a proper one once i get 7229! i'll even give x64 a try? ps i would recommend keeping error reporting service just for compatibility reasons! also i would keep remote desktop & assistance, just so when i click on the remote setting link in system properties, no error pops up!

here's a temporary guide: tools required: WAIK 1.1, gimagex (optional), vlite 1.2 all must be installed! nb. this method has been tested on windows 7 build 7201 x86 Stage 1: 1) create 2 folders such as c:\s1 & c:\s2 2) copy/extract the contents of iso/disc to s1 3) mount install.wim (image 5) to s2 folder using gimagex or imagex 4) from a cmd prompt, run install_wim_tweak.exe /m & then type c:\s2 to take ownership of reg hive, created by & credit to BM wnuku 5) commit changes & unmount Stage 2: 1) first download this: 2) extract the batch file to the sources directory ie. c:\s1\sources 3) mount install.wim (image 5) to s2 folder using gimagex or imagex 4) run rem7201.bat from the sources directory (which has s2 folder already selected) optional: while the batch file is running, you could delete the Recovery folder from c:\s2\windows\system32 directory, delete the contents of c:\s2\windows\winsxs\backup (you may need unlocker as the files are locked; do not delete the backup folder itself), also delete the folders & its contents from c:\s2\windows\web\wallpaper except for the windows folder which contains the default wallpaper, again you will need the unlocker tool) 5) once done, commit changes & unmount then use vlite with my last session: before you create the iso in vlite, make sure you delete every file in the sources folder except for boot.wim & install.wim. also, you will need to extract from the original iso, setup.exe from the sources folder to c:\s1\sources otherwise you will get a cd driver not found error when trying to install!!! i've just installed this in vmware, set my paging file to 512mb, installed vmware tools, ran windows update to install the sound driver, restarted & my hd usage space is showing up as just under 2.5gb! nb. as the sources folder already includes dism, you do not need to download & install waik for windows 7! the bat file uses dism from the sources folder to remove the packages from windows.

you could try installing in compatibility mode to see if that works?
-
unfortunately, my version only works with x86 as i havent tested it with x64
-
btw whats your final install size? ive got mines down to just under 4gb! im sure i could shrink it further tho?
-
ive removed sqm in 32bit without any update problems; also office 2k7 installs & runs fine! if anyone wishes & the OP doesnt mind, i will post a guide here on how i removed stuff with dism (without installing waik for windows 7) & vlite? ps the minor problem i had was some of the shortcuts were still left in the start menu & the windows features was broken (but it shouldn't matter too much as the needed components are installed)?
-
it could just be a x64 bug as i never encountered any problems?
-
did you first mount the install.wim with imagex? you still need to have waik 1.1 installed! see this thread on removing packages: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=104130&hl=

you coud try removing some of the packages including internet explorer with dism (without installing waik 7) before you vlite? if you extract this batch file: ..into your sources folder, mount the image, you might need to change the image folder location in the batch file & run. use this proggy created by BM wnuku with the /m switch first before you use the batch file ps this works with x86 7201 build

a quick update, i have finally made an almost stable vlite'd copy of windows 7. its a mixture of dism & vlite with the install size coming to just under 3gb. the only major problem is that most of the mmc snapins dont work such as gpedit or local security policy? ps regarding the install size, i could be wrong? it seems to vary when checking the properties of C drive?

that seemed to have worked!

Hi, i'm interest, but have questions: 1) Is obligatory add Bitlocker packages features? Or can I delete from "features.xml" ? 2) Is obligatory add netFX 3 package feature? Or can I delete from "features.xml"? 3) Can I remove BitLocker and netFX features with vLite ? 4) Can your guide be aplied to Server 2008 SP2 standard Spanish? Thanks for publishing your guide 1) it is obligatory to add bitlocker in features.xml if you want to remove it from the feature list (see your pic) 2) i would highly recommend to keep netfx 3) as long as you added bitlocker & netfx in features.xml, then you can use vlite to remove it 4) it should be language independant so i would think it will work? for some reason, i couldn't remove everything as usually the internet printing client, lpr port monitor & print service tools remain. also, bear in mind, there must be at least 1 server role available otherwise (it doesn't matter if its not installed) the server manager will crash

more info pls as an example, i mounted install.wim to folder c:\s2 using imagex & then ran this command: dism.exe /image:C:\s2 /remove-package /packagename:Microsoft-Windows-IIS-WebServer-AddOn-2-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~6.1.7127.0 i get package error: 0x80070005 error: 5 access is denied. did u use the wim tweak with /m switch ? should i have done?
-
i actually used imagex to mount, using the gimagex GUI with r/w checked? for some reason, i cant mount with dism? the mount-wim command is unknown?

ps. with web server branding package has been removed but you can delete it from the packages.txt file to keep the server branding. also, in the last session ini, remove the driver integration unless u have that driver to integrate?

tools required: WAIK 1.1, gimagex (optional), vlite 1.2 all must be installed! nb. this method has been tested on windows server 2003 & vmware. Windows Web Server Stage 1: 1) create 2 folders such as c:\s1 & c:\s2 2) copy the contents of Web disc to s1 3) mount install.wim (image 1) to s2 folder using gimagex or imagex 4) run install_wim_tweak.exe with c:\s2 as the folder selected to take ownership of reg hive, created by & credit to BM wnuku 5) commit changes & unmount Stage 2: 1) first download this: credit to 7bingo7 2) copy or extract contents to the Tools\Servicing folder of the Windows AIK directory 3) mount install.wim (image 1) to s2 folder using gimagex or imagex 4) run addfeatures.cmd (which has s2 folder already selected). this will add bitlocker, desktop experience, netfx 3 & wireless networking 5) once done, result should show as 0, commit changes & unmount Stage 3: 1) mount install.wim (image 1) to s2 folder using gimagex or imagex 2) this time run rmpackages.cmd which will remove most packages (see packages.txt for details), again this file is linked to the s2 folder 3) once completed, again make sure the result is 0, commit changes & unmount as you've probably noticed by now, there is still no use of WSIM to rebuild the catalog...do not do this. Stage 4: 1) start vlite with the -extreme switch 2) use my last session ini file 3) this step you need to do very quickly while vlite is doing its thing: copy the winsxs.bat file from the server2008web zip file to your vlite temp directory which is normally vstemp19?, go to windows\winsxs\backup folder, paste, run the bat file & then delete; this will nullify some of the large files in the folder 4) once vlite finishes, iso size should be around 625mb & install size less than 3gb or thereabouts, test in vmware. Windows Server Standard for server standard, do the same as above but from stage 2 onwards, use the files from here: for vlite stage use this last session ini: credit to aviv00 for original concept

if anyone is still interested, i will post another guide to vliting your server 2008 sp2 web or standard x86. i have managed to get the iso down to 625mb for web & 680mb for standard with the add features in server manager still intact. after install, hard drive space consumed is about 3gb.
