Like I said. Any new data you write may overwrite the old data. If the drive was mostly full when you borked it, then the chances of writing over old stuff (as opposed to writing over empty space) increases. The whole point of a 1:1 copy is that, much of this recovery software is not as reliable and effective as they want you to think. Sometimes it can do nothing at all or do something bad. There is a strong chance that it will not work, that's why you need a clone to mess around with. When stuff goes wrong and the clone is screwed, you delete the clone and make a new one. If you mess around with the original and things go wrong... bye bye.

Perpetual Motion Machine? Discussion. Plans + theory.
weEvil replied to weEvil's topic in General Discussion
That's why they are spinning and not in place. Why I am asking about deterioration of the magnet is: Let's say the machine does work as per the diagram. But instead of 'free' energy, its stealing power from the magnets. So in reality you buy these super strong magnets from the factory which are produced with thousands of kilowatts of energy, you put it into the device and it gives out a few thousand kilowatts of energy. You think its free, but in reality its a different type of battery-like device. Ultimately, powered by coal (from the electricity generating plant) Could this be possible? -
5. Buttons don't align in the shutdown dialog. 6. Still the default XP-style graphic in Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices I know its probably what the Vista one looks like, but vista is by no means complete. It still has some of the old 16 color icons from Windows 95. Compare to the one above. All nice and polished. It doesn't have jaggy edges to it like the XP-style one. 7. Icon is not animated. Stands out like a sore thumb. The background should be a white, cream color to blend with the theme. 8. Does not like fourth button of the window controls. But #4 with all the white space and far too much branding really p***es me off. It looks very ugly, cluttered and the rest of the system properties windows are way too empty. #8 is runner up since I like to use eMule, and it stands out. I'm not sure what you can do about that one. Overall I think its coming along very well. Great pack damian!! Also, I did these on a fresh install of Windows XP Pro SP3 RC1 v3264.

Issues I have had with Vistapack: 1. The Open File dialog. 2. Blocky Icons. They don't look as smooth, and aliased as the other ones. 3. Vista Basic start button is having transparency issues. 4. Too much empty space in the System Properties window. 5 pieces of branding. 2 of which are duplicates. Its unnecessarily cluttered.

Yes, "preallocated", but unlike FAT Partition Table (at the "front of drive"), AFAIK the MFT can be anywhere ("best" place is middle of partition). I see. How big is the NTFS MFT anyway? Does it change size if you have e.g: more small files filling the drive vs a couple large ones?
-
My bad. I read it wrong. But you do know how the hard drive works.. right? It wrotes to the next immediatelly empty space (this explains fragmentation also). Your data is broken, the main record (MFT) is broken. All the space is now understood to be empty since the main record does not show which is filled and which is empty... so by deault its all empty. Any data you write will overwrite the old stuff. Better just read it. I'm not sure about the master file table MFT, since I think the space is always pre-allocated and doesn't change? I'm not sure what would happen if you try to write a new one. Would it over-write some of the data or just the old file table since its always located in one location only? <- (This I would like to know.) I hope the recovery goes perfect. It really sucks losing family mementos.

Success!! Using a different PC works! On a different internet connection.

Cool. We're at Vize 1.0 now!! Can't wait for XPize. :w00t:

I'll try that. I used different browsers though. Opera, IE, Firefox. Nothing. Except IE doesn't let me click the button at all. I'll try a different system, far, far away.

Add-ons. Where can I find the ones that I used? Does Firefox register/store them somewhere? I just need the names. -

No can do. I'm using the tete optimised builds. I'm just going to make backups of everything before messing with the system. -
Where does Firefox like to store its bookmarks and the plugins it uses? I installed a new system on a different partition. It broke the master boot record. My original system does nto work. Only the new install. I don't need to get it up and running, I only need to extract the bookmarks and the plugins (I just need the names) from Firefox. Help? I found a bunch of bookmark backup data in Administrator > Application Data > Mozilla... etc. I need the most current stuff before it crashed.

The program will do that for you. Download a trial version and see if its visible. Told you not to modify it. The more things you do to it, the less likely you are to get back your lost info. If you put new data in, the drive will probably overwrite the broken, unreadable stuff. That's why I suggest cloning the contents to a new drive. If you mess up the clone, you make a new one until you get the repairs right.

Nice. R-studio also does a 1:1 copy of media.
-
You can give this a shot: http://www.handyrecovery.com/ BTW, don't do anything just yet. Wait until you have enough replies to this. And whatever you do, DON'T MODIFY THE PARTITION. Its already messed up. Try to clone the disk (a 1:1 copy) if you can (you need a drive the same size or bigger to clone to) and mess around with the copy all you want. And for the future, you might want to invest in some good quality DVD or BluRay media. The kind that remains readable for about 10-25 years is a good choice.

Don't magnets naturally deteriorate anyway? -
I use GMail, for both work & personal accounts. So that's out. But I found this temporary file storage: http://www.4filehosting.com/ No registration. Very simple. Just tried it.

What if you fix the spinning magnets against the main wheel? So the small magnets are small gears, and the wheel is one big gear. This would prevent that. But it would have a huge increase in friction. -
Here is the general design of the Perpetual Motion Machine I found: This actually looks like it makes some sense. Look at the drawing. Notice how the wheel magnets always spin and attract the bar magnets? Its like linear magnetic acceleration. While I don't believe in Perpetual Motion since I have had alot of schooling, this makes me less skeptical because: 1. The inventor lays out the plan. There is no motive, no con-artist wanting funding or money... etc. 2. It makes some logical sense to me. This design at least. Please tell me why this design is flawed if you can find reasons for thinking so. I'm going to read the info on the site and see if there is anything that can disprove the perpetuality of this design. BTW, this was designed by a dude called overconfident. I've checked many sites. The oldest version I can find is 3.0 I'm looking for Google Earth 2.0. Is there anywhere I can get it? Does anybody still have version 2.0 lying around?

Good replacement for default XP Picture viewer?
weEvil replied to weEvil's topic in Software Hangout
Tried it. Its terribly slow. I'll stick with the standard block zoom. Happen to know how I can disable playback of media files? Its annoying when I get them confused with pictures since they both have thumbs. -

This is exactly what I was looking for. It even supports Xara files! NICE! And 64-bit for later! It looks nice so far. I have to test out the shell extension. Do you know any way to have a better zoom? Mine is very blocky. Can I use something like bilinear upsampling when zooming? -
Cool. So who is using the Rossetta data? University labs? Big pharma?
