  1. Well I get the same error with either W7 & XP. I only tried it with XP to see if it made any difference. I have no plans to use it with XP, just W7 Pro. What on earth does that error mean? A search doesn't help. Ok, question, the latest version is 8.1.5 which is what I have. Is V8 suppose to be for Win8, not 7??
  2. Well, I tried installing in another drive (same PC) running XP and I get the same error. What's up??
  3. I got that from here. You referred to "MS" which led me to believe it was MS related somehow, as in IE which didn't make any sense to me. Sorry I misunderstood you.
  4. Try these; http://blogs.technet.com/b/markrussinovich/archive/2011/01/11/3379158.aspx https://forums.hak5.org/index.php?/topic/10344-change-your-windows-bsod-color-from-blue-to-red-or-any-color/ http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/40427/heres-how-to-create-a-blue-screen-of-death-in-any-color-you-want/
  5. What would help ones that have no idea what each of these looks like is to provide links for each. It would probably helpthe vote count
  6. I don't run IE, I run Opera. Since Opera is not tied to the O/S, why does/would it affect that? Actually, I run the "USB" or standalone version that is not "installed" which one would think distances it further from M$'s clutches. Thanks for all of that, we did get OT somewhat.
  7. It initiated or activate the file. Merge to me is when something is combined with something else. Not added as a separate entity. I did kinda forgot about the right click option of "merge", as I haven't used that function for some time. But, than again it's M$, it's their way of the highway, which kinda explains the post following yours. jaclaz; Ok, then their forum/site is still there? What is the work around?
  8. I understood that part. No problem there. . Still understood, but the last part his post didn't state. Merge and "run" to me are two totally different operations. I never saw/heard the term "merge" used during registry operations. I wish I had a dollar for every post, blog, article etc. that has incorrect, misleading, vague and/or missing information as this does. The writer who knows the process, assumes everyone else is at his level. So his use of the term "run" really means "merge"? I didn't know there was that option since I never saw any procedures that needed that to be done. . I know how to "run" a registry file, I've done it dozens of times. It's a poor choice of terms AFAIC.What I don't understand is, a entry already in the registry, how can you 'run' one that is already there? Any time I 'ran' a registry file, it was a separate file with a 'reg' extension. BTW, I plan on reinstalling the O/S anyway, but I just wondered what this deal was all about.
  9. Problems; 1. I tried installing this under Program Files, but it appears that you can't since when I try to run it, I get a "Critical" popup. 2. I also just ran with the default username since I couldn't see why that would or should matter, but apparently is does, 3. I uninstalled this three times, but I still can't get it to run getting a runtime error message 4. The last two installs, the username box did not appear. I did a search for this "runtime error 372, failure to load control Common Dialog from comdlg32.ocx". A search for that turns up different usernames corrupting a Windows file. Now what??
  10. "It seems like the good guys @rt7lite.com are experiencing similar issues to the ones we have (and had and will have ) with board software, "friendly names" and what not" Explain. "export BFE and MpsSvc from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services and then go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{E2B3C97F-6AE1-41AC-817A-F6F92166D7DD} and export that also. Now just run those reg files" He lost me on all of that. How can you export a registry file and then run it?
  11. I didn't get around to responding yet. Done so now. Thanks. Jury is still out as of now, but it appears to be the problem.
  12. Win7 sp1 x64 using hidden admin account (super admin) error 0x00000154 When I try to enable sharing of partitions (drive letters) I get this error. I tried it on different drive letters, but the same thing. I searched for this using the error message but no meaningful results.
  13. My situation; 1. Existing 1 TB HDD; partitioned 10GB w/XP, 600 GB for media, 300GB for program, photo & document storage. 2. Increase the 1st partition to 20-25GB from the 2nd partition (resize both & merge), 3. Load Win7 64 bit in the first, replacing XP. 4. Retain the 2nd & 3rd partitions without loosing data (it is backed up elsewhere). 5. Save a image of 'C' to install a mirror O/S on a SSD. 6. Using a MB with a UEFI BIOS set to AHCI. Questions; I know the hidden partition is MBR, but, when & where does the choice of MBR vs GPT happen? I've loaded Win7 on a small SSD, but I didn't see any choices. I know I can just wipe the existing drive, but I would prefer not to unless absolutely necessary. If for nothing else, gaining the experience of doing all of this. The more I have read, the more confusion this seems to be. I had less trouble 13 years ago with Win98 on my first PC build.
  14. BTW, that board went back. My old board had all of the above, but it can't be upgraded any more than what it was. It's also a O/S change and surely not W8.
  15. There are always some differences, but so far with ASRock (first hand) Asus & Gigabyte (second hand through their support number and reading the manuals) all three seem to suffer the same shortcomings. Well, considering it was Intel's design, there is no surprise here. Having more than one bootable drive can cause issues, especially when one tries ti loads a O/S on one drive with the others visible. Data get cross installed in more than one drive. It has happened to me more than once with different O/S's. The other drives have to be either disabled or disconnected which is very inconvenient. That solves nothing. It's disabling the drive at boot time is the issue. You guys never had more than one bootable drive in your systems?? I don't mean running more than one O/S on a single partition either. One drive goes down, you have a instant backup. You alos have easy access to system files to correct possible problems without using a 3rd party boot disk.
  16. I'm discovering (the hard way) this supposed new & improved BIOS deal isn't what's it cracked to be. Is the following a across the board list of what this can't do? 1. The initial boot screen, the one where you can clearly see all the attached drives, flashes by in a second preventing one from seeing anything in a blink of a eye? is there a way to pause this so I can see if all the drives are there without going into the BIOS like it use to be? 2. The 'home page' (or main page if you like) doesn't show the drives either, just the processor & memory which makes that mostly useless. You have to hunt around and go into a sub menu to find that out. 3. There is no ability to isolate SATA ports, it's either all or none which kinda makes that useless if one wants to hide one or two drives for whatever reason. More questions when I come across more issues.
  17. Sorry I couldn't come up with a better title, but it would of been too long. Situation: New build; ASRock 990FX Ext 4 MB, Will be running Win7, Two drives transfered over from nForce 570 MB as is, New SSD & 1TB HDD, neither formatted, All drives SATA, MB is set for AHCI for all ports. Questions; 1. Can individual SATA ports be disabled? 2. In the UEFI interface (BIOS) under Storage, there is a external eSATA port option to enabler or disable the SATA ESP for each of the six SATA ports. What is that suppose to mean? 3. I enabled the "AMD AHCI BIOS ROM" option, but I see no difference during boot.? 4. Is there the ability to use a conventional old school BIOS instead of UEFI? Now here is the kicker; When I connect either to ports 7 or 8 which uses a Marvell controller, both have been able to boot into XP by themselves. I though this was impossible unless you radically modify them to do so. But when I switch either over to ports 1-6, the BIOS sees them, but both produce a BSOD as expected (until now on the other controller). How can this happen??
  18. Using MS's update catalog site I was able to get three drivers packages for d/l. None of them would install with a message they weren't the correct drivers.
  19. I went to MS Update Catalog and d/l'ed the x64 & the x86 versions, but both get rejected.
  20. I finally managed to d/l the x64 driver for this printer directly from MS's update site as opposed to doing it through update driver since I want a copy of the driver so I can load off line like I do with all other drivers for the past 13 years. I finally managed to figure out how to get the driver without using the "update driver" through Device Manager that automatically d/l's the driver, installs it but with no copy saved for backup. You have to repeat the process if you re-install the O/S which is stupid and unnecessary. That is after you change the setting under "Device Installation Settings" to "Yes do this automatically" since it won't work if you leave it at the default setting. The two packages I have are x86 & x64 for this i560. Using the .inf file, both return the same message that is isn't the correct driver. There is no .exe so I can run it by itself. Canon has some file that is suppose to work, but with no details just how to use it. A fix for the problem. I tried that, but that has absolutely no effect. Any ideas here, I have never needed to do all of this for any device .
  21. I managed to get a d/l of the x86 & x64 drivers for Win7 for a Canon i560 printer, but it gives a error that it isn't compatible. I tried but versions . The device shows in Device manager, but it won't allow loading either driver through update driver. BUT, I can use the auto update feature as long as I changes the setting for auto update to auto from nanual and it will install the driver from their website. The problem is I would prefer to have a driver that I can load offline as I do with just about everything else. Ideas?
  22. Running XP pro w/sp3, after a changed my router one of my three active partitions (3 HDD's) the one I use all the time is slow to shutdown. I changed out a old Verizon DSL route for a Linksys wireless router (using the wired connection) and by doing so the system is slow to shutdown. I remember reading something about network conflicts connected to the O/S, but don't remember the terms which makes searching impossible. I use static IP addresses for my three PC's and two TiVo DVR's which are on the network. No firewalls. This happened right after I swapped routers.
  23. No glitch. All three columns are sorted, Status was sorted last. The reason a few of the 'Automatic' services are separated in the last column is those have not not started. This seems to be the logical way to show the list. Alphabetically, status then startup type, I can instantly see what is running, the type it is set for and it is listed in alphabetically order. One of a few M$ programs that is user friendly (after you set it up correctly). From elsewhere I discovered that with this newly created duplicate 'Service's' file, If I open the file in Notepad and edit the top and bottom figures at the top of the overly long page that opens to "2" and "870" which is the top and bottom of a 1600x900 Laptop screen that I am using, then save it, the newly created Services console will open full height. I don't need a wider console window, just higher. For a 1920x1200 window it would be 2 & 1170:
