  1. I have tried SeaMonkey & Pale Moon. Both are missing critical features that FF v56 has, namely print preview (w/PM), 'Simplify page" (w/both) and/or the lack of navigation button add-ons . BUT, they are superior to FF with far less overhead taxing (loading down) the O/S with multiple processes running, even with setting a limit to one process. There are still three running! This is a screen shot from ProcessHacker after less than 1 minute after starting FF with only one page open (which is just a login for a stock market trading site). (The 3 last columns are I/O counts of Other, Reads & Writes counts). Compare that with Palemoon & SeaMonkey with the same page loaded! (Palemoon is a portable also, just not from Portable Applications web site)
  2. No, I corrected that previous post. I've tried to find some kind of pattern. It seems, folders with .exe's are the prime target. I can open folders with images (.jpg, .png etc), then close and there is no issue re-naming. Folders that have programs in (not installed, just original backups), even just opening, then closing will cause the lockup. BUT, not always. I also removed Panda with those 2 loaded programs that I couldn't stop (by their design). Using MS Config, I unchecked all of my installed programs (non MS), but that made no difference. To be clear, none of this has to do with the active O/S partition. These are other partitions on other HDD's (I have 1 SSD, & 2 HDD's all partitioned at least once. The O/S is on the SSD) I'm going to try a shot at AutoRuns. ProcessHacker & MS Config aren't cutting it. I use them since they are reasonably easy to read, understand & use. .
  3. ShellFolderFix has to run, same goes for ClassicShell it retains the 'Classic' (2k) look. I disabled both, but the problem remained. I took a screen shot of Process Hacker in normal mode and Safe Mode to compare the differences. BTW; Explorer was running, I had a folder opened at the time. .
  4. dencorso; Probably not, but "Starter" is from someone/somewhere else and after 10 years of no updates, "abandon" surely qualifys. I am going to remove Panda, it's only a backup A/V program, it's not active (per say, but those 2 processes running when not really doing anything doesn't cut it for me.
  5. The startup tab doesn't list what MS Config does (there are also two under Services in MS Config that aren't there also).
  6. Under the "Processes" tab, there is no Explorer entry.
  7. I guess I did, thanks. Autoruns is a bit involved, but current. As interesting as this appears, it's 10 years out of date (v5.6.2.9 2009). Isn't that a issue?
  8. What 's "Starter"?? Goodmaneuver; One of the 1st things I do when I used RT7 Lite (now NT Lite, assuming if it's still available) to remove M$'s bloat is to unhide everything that is hidden. .
  9. I also grabbed that tool, there are so many entries it's kinda hard to separate any of them. Thanks for the guide. Safe Mode is fine. I tried a number of folders, opening them up, closing and doing minor name changes. None failed. There are 8 or so processes that don't load in Safe Mode. I don't see any that would be of suspect, but I'll try one at a time.
  10. Understood. I believe I do have both programs. Thanks. Anyone else reading this, welcome to join it.
  11. How could that be tracked down? I use Process Hacker as my Task Mgr replacement, but I don't see that would do any good.
  12. Oh, closing Explorer and re-starting seems to solve it, but that isn't that convenient to do.
  13. Safe Mode is not necessary. Just a re-boot. Half the time, even 'Unlocker' doesn't work, but gives the option to do the action (delete or re-name) after a re-boot. Cut and paste is another non-worker. But again, this isn't with every or just any folder. I don't see any pattern. Funny thing is, copy & paste does work. Just to show the extent of the problem, this has a list of 36 'so-called' fixes; https://windowsreport.com/action-cannot-be-completed-because-file-open-another-program/ The common issue is thumbnails, which never applied here. BTW, this also applies to W10 !
  14. Yes W7 is x64. And yes, after a reboot I can delete that folder as long as I don't open it back up. I don't see any connection to IP addresses and this problem.
  15. Here is the list, nothing even remotely close to that number. Thanks for the link. I'm surprised I didn't find that thou the title of the thread isn't close to what the error message was which is what I based my searches on. I assume this gets C/P to a command line? I tried it as it more than once, but nothing was created; Security updates list 1210 thru 0315.txt
  16. Never done it, I have full admin rights across the board (by initial design), it's running AFAIK, any drive, any partition.
  17. Yes, it shouldn't of been, the O/S is on a SSD. I disabled it. Not sure to the 2nd question. Was that "do .net" or "dot.net"? I don't see it running in Process Hacker as a service or process, but not sure of the exact name it has. No to both.
  18. Doing a search brings up plenty of hits. Never heard of "Unlocker"?? (There are others.) The only updates I have are security related up to the middle of 2016 when this base image was created via RT7 Lite. I have never done auto-updates! All I was doing was renaming a file inside that folder. Sometimes just opening a folder up, doing nothing, this stops renaming or deleting that folder and worse yet many time Unlocker is unable to do the action until next boot.
  19. Then, what is the purpose of these in the 1st place??
  20. This site falls into the 'over 50%' category. That "N" in green almost fills the entire 1st page if I were to print this. Simplify Page gets rid of that, but spreads out everything else.
  21. Interesting point. I also find Opera Classic does a better job many times than FF at handling poorly written pages (which is well over 50% of sites in one form or another) that don't print properly. FF has the "Simplify Page" option (something oddly SeaMonkey doesn't) which works many times, but not all. Of course some sites are a complete disaster forcing the use of a custom screen capture program to crop what you want (I use SnagIt).
  22. It's been there since inception on any W7 PC I have had. Uninstall is out of the question, that's for serious issues, not annoyances.
  23. I have searched the entire universe (at least it seems that way) for a actual solution more than once to this with absolutely no luck. The simplest operation; Open folder, examine contents, close folder, then rename fails. Many times even using 'Unlocker'. I did find a very long list of things to try, again most having to do with thumbnails, but no luck there, of course starting with checking those multiple show/don't show thumbnails/icons entries. In spite of what 95% of the suggestions state (thumbnails issue), just about all of these folders have no thumbnails inside. The only operation that can be done is moving the folder. Delete, cut or rename functions are locked out, half the time even using Unlocker. Never had this in XP. I never see a pattern to this to make matters worse. WTF is responsible for this beyond lame M$ blunder all all times??
  24. I only use V56 since it was the last version that works with all the necessary add-ons (Classic Theme Restorer & Tab Mix Plus) to make up for the toy phone/post teenager designed look of these newer version wonders. Some prefer v52 since it allows Java to be used. You might check out SeaMonkey which is close to FF v56 in configuration.
