Auto-Patcher For Windows 98se (English)

Recommended Posts

... And may I point out that WU will store all that stuff on your HDD, whereas you can store AP on a CD before install, run/unstall it, update 98SE, then uninstall it. Saves space on those older PC's (those that have them).

Besides, AP98SE isn't going to be updated real soon, so use it or don't...

BTW, you're free to change it any way you want; nothing sacred here. Just a good knowledge of batch scripts. Be it on your head, though, since it was an exhausting trail leading here to ensure that (almost) nothing could go wrong... ;)

Hi forgive my poor English, people here speak only Spanish, KernelEx 4,5 2, has been very successful when I applied to users who do not expect your PC works now, sp3 beta4 ok, but autoparche step to incorporate the new unofficial update, great work would be painful not to continue. Saludos, gracias.

Personally, I'd add Mono to the project.

http://www.go-mono.com/mono-downloads/download.html

You'll want to select Windows, then the option "Mono for Windows, Gtk#, and XSP"

* When installing, I didn't install XSP, so I don't know whether it will break compatibility.

* I also have not tested without KernelEx - I assume it will fail.

After a long google, all I was able to find is this: http://lists.ximian.com/pipermail/mono-list/2005-November/029656.html

Probably Windows Me is supported when using Microsoft Layer for Unicode but

Windows 95 and Windows 98 support requires source code modification to avoid

shell32.dll version 5.0 API dependency.

I successfully used the AP with the unofficial SP2 + 98SE2ME back in 2006. No bugs. I am now trying a fresh install with AP07+08update and 98SE2ME.

Can someone please point out the solution for the EXPLORER.EXE and SHELL32.DLL crash when booting?

Many thanks...

The AP works great. Second time around I avoided option 3 when installing 98SE2ME.

In the case of installing a repotec wp-1400 wireless lan NIC, I had zero success after autopatching, but it went fine once 98SE2ME was installed.

I wonder whether it is more appropriate to attempt to install hardware drivers AFTER all patching/updating has been completed...

I am trying to establish for myself, and perhaps others, what is the proper order for applying this and other fine work from the board to a fresh installation of 98SE.

A search of the board yields contradictory and, often, out of date answers. And although I think that a comprehensive answer to this question deserves ultimately to be made into a sticky, a new thread may fail to attract the attention of those familiar with the Autopatcher which is probably the most essential element of such an installation.

My best take on the matter would be this:

0. 98SE CD

1. 98lite chubby for 98Se installation - optional

2. Autopatcher Dec2007Full + Dec2008 update

a. TweakUI for autologin

b. directx 9c

c. dcom

d. IE 6 - optional

e. Jet - opitonal (include for security updates)

f. critical updates, etc.

g. other stuff to taste

- java and other third-party stuff perhaps best installed manually if the destination it be a driver other than C:

4. Hardware drivers

5. WordPerfect - optional (see 9. below)

6. 98SE2ME - optional but highly recommended

-2nd install option again recommended

-3rd install option not recommended for reasons of speed and compatibility

7. 98MP10 - optional (for those installing Media Player via Autopatcher?)

8. Kernel Update Project - optional but highly recommended

9. Revolution Pack 9 - optional but recommended

- clear type is beautiful but messes cosmetically with Grammatik in WordPerfect

- possibly prevents WordPerfect from installing correctly, and in particular the spell checker from functioning, if installed before WordPerfect

10. Software generally (Word, Open Office, etc.)

Please offer corrections, suggestions, alternatives.

In particular, are there still packages that should be applied before autopatcher (SESp2.1a en,WUPG98en, etc.)?

The goal is make such fine work as accessible as possible. So thank you for contributing.

I recently had to restore my main system and forgot to back these up in the process. It seems like soporific's site is down again, so could anyone point me to where I can find the December 2007 and 2008 updates, please?

I have one question regarding AutoPatcher...

I installed it, and now I got a several second long wait before icons appear on desktop. MSGSRV32.EXE is what is waiting there... the wait does not happen when I have networking disabled. I had the problem on my previous install too but it just went away after couple of reboots, but this time it has stayed...

EDIT: Problem solved. It was caused by Directory Services update. I did a manual install of it, then uninstalled it from Add/Remove programs and everything is back to normal :D

I am beginning to build a web page for things that seem to have "fallen off the edge of the internet", and that I have legitimate copies of, so this looks like a prime candidate. The page can be found here: http://inkt.co.cc/5353/ . Hope that helps. Sorry for the ads on FileFactory.com
