graysky Posted January 19, 2005 Posted January 19, 2005 How about it all. Can anyone recommend a non-bloatware alternative to adobe reader? The only feature I'm interested in is a full text search (beyond the normal reader functionality).I've poked around in google and on sourceforge.net but haven't found anything that's small and to-the-point. Ghost script, for example, is nearly as large as adobe reader.
Martin L Posted January 19, 2005 Posted January 19, 2005 what about this one: http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php small, fast and clean one
graysky Posted January 19, 2005 Author Posted January 19, 2005 Thanks man, that's just what I'm looking for... very nice!
Martin Zugec Posted January 19, 2005 Posted January 19, 2005 Or U could use AR, just get rid of tons of plugins (my case)?
Shotgun Posted January 19, 2005 Posted January 19, 2005 what about this one: http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php small, fast and clean one I also talked about Foxit PDF reader on this post http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showto...ndpost&p=236800Otherwise, seems like a repeat thread.
graysky Posted January 19, 2005 Author Posted January 19, 2005 Or U could use AR, just get rid of tons of plugins (my case)?I've been doing that for a while now, but I'm half trying to cut back on space on my CD and the other half of me just hates bloatware.
soldier1st Posted January 20, 2005 Posted January 20, 2005 foxit has annoying banner ads,if it weren't for that i would switch, bundling adware and spyware into an app isin't what i would use.and no i am not paying to get rid of the ads.
Inray Posted January 20, 2005 Posted January 20, 2005 Besides the annoying ads, Foxit also has many rendering issues and a low quality postscript engine.I think you should stick with AR7.
Jeremy Posted January 20, 2005 Posted January 20, 2005 The banner ads? You can remove those by going into the View menu in the program! Also, it's only v1.2, not v7.02. Give the author(s) some time to improve it. I viewed a huge PDF file from Google results and it looked fine. It's just a PDF file, don't be so picky...its not like its Video.
graysky Posted January 21, 2005 Author Posted January 21, 2005 Yeah...since it's under a meg, it blows AR7 away... that think is total bloatware. I have viewed some 600+ page patents in Foxit without any rendering problems. 5 stars to them for that application!
DigeratiPrime Posted January 21, 2005 Posted January 21, 2005 i'd heard of foxit before, but after reading this this thread and finally trying it i must say im impressed. Its about 1MB and does NOT Install! It only associates itself with PDF files on first run. If i can plug that "Advertisement" which is really not all that bad i will switch in a heart beat.
jaclaz Posted January 22, 2005 Posted January 22, 2005 Should anyone need a plugin for Bart PE, here is a link to plugins (on 911CD forum):http://www.911cd.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=7761http://www.911cd.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=7764As said there to critics to this proggie:As of now I tried it with up to 30Mb .pdf files with no problems.(not from WinPe but from within standard 2k install)It is visibly faster than Acroread. It actually seems to have some glitches on bookmarks, though. However I think that it might be the files' fault. As a matter of fact PDF is somewhat a "closed format" and by the flourishing of "PDF creators" it is probable that some files, created with something that is not the original Adobe Acrobat somehow go astray from the right specification. For example I am experimenting with this nifty freeware:PDF Explorerhttp://rtt.planetaclix.pt/which works for me very well except for a couple of files. The same files minimally edited and re-saved work well. And what do you want from a free 1 Mb proggie, blood?jaclaz
graysky Posted January 22, 2005 Author Posted January 22, 2005 If i can plug that "Advertisement" which is really not all that bad i will switch in a heart beat.If you look under the program options, you can disable it.
DigeratiPrime Posted January 22, 2005 Posted January 22, 2005 right but it reappears each time the program opens. Is their a way to lock it?
