Hi all,

What are the effects of sitting infront of the monitor for hours[6 hours+ a day]? Is it really bad?

Thanks. Please reply.

I've done it... I still have 20/20 vision... And I'm only 15...

The effects are probably that your eyes get better! ;)

(No glasses for me! ;))

i've been doing it, well more than 6 but my eyes are not in good shape, i'm on contact lenses with short sightedness (Myopia) and astigmatism and high numbers :)

but this started b4 i started using the comp that much, its bc our class in 5th grade was big and i was sitting at the backs and started having problems, then played too much of game gear and game boy :) than eventually my eyes got worse..

i think it also has something to do with genes..

Effects for me include:

  • Excessive intake of caffeine
  • Forgetting to eat
  • Headaches
  • Eyesight degradation

The first two are probably more a product of my personality than anything else. I suspect the second two are far more common. Vision muscles are like any other muscles, if we don't use them, they will become atrophied. Spending all day focussing on a computer screen deprives our eye muscles of the exercise they need. My optomestrist recommended I take a break at least once an hour to focus on something far away. This is adivice that I ignore at my own risk, but thought others may still appreciate hearing.

I'm still young and invincible, who cares if my eyes are getting worse? ;)

I find no negative effects of sitting in front of a monitor for extensive periods of time, but I sit in front of an LCD screen that is always on a very low/lowest brightness setting. I still have 20/20 vision, but I remember getting headaches frequently in the past, which may or may not have been attributed to sitting in front of a rather bright CRT for long periods of time.

I have no itching etc. etc., but after all those hours, when my eyes get very tired, its harder to focus on things. Its better after sleep.

However, pain in the nape muscles (that's the back of the neck) or or cramps, they go numb, I mean by this.

@phoenix_nf: Ur 23 right ¿ n ur mom still screaming at you ... lol

I'm 20 and my mom still screams at me for being infront of my computer.... I just say "Ok" and stay.. lol.

but 12 years i've sat infront of the computer... And i can still read every line of the eye tests at the DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles) but lately my vision has been getting a little bad, and am getting carpal tunnel in both my wrists.. so take breaks get up and stretch and more importantly... remeber there is still a sun out there..

Well I'm a network admin and work about 8 hours each day solidly in front of a computer and then come home and spend another 6 hours in front of another computer. I'm perfectly ok.

its better with a big TFT, i use a 23inch Widescreen TFT the proffessional image editing stuff.

its a lot better on the eyes. but i must admit these problems

-addictiveness to porn

-addictiveness to online games

-excessive sugar intake

-excessive caffine intake

-excessive nicotine intake

-excessive alchohol intake

-excessive masterbation

-violence (die b*****d die)

See i'm perfectly fine

  • 2 weeks later...

*touch wood

Negatives:

A lot of the "addicting" and "excesses" described above.

Thankfully, my eyes are fine. But sitting long hours continuously does seem to contribute to non-usage of energy produced...

And of course, parents go "TURN THE **** THING OFF!"
