PNG is a vector format.

PNG is exclusively a raster format. The compression for continuous tone data like photographs is worse. It would only make sense to use PNG if for some reason the limit was not enforced for it. Sometimes web servers apply more compression to JPEG and worsen its quality, which can be bypassed with PNG.

You might be thinking of Macromedia Fireworks, which I think created PNG files with a private extension for its data. But it was only understood by this software.

Of course it is! I don't know ho would suggest it. It's not a bad format per se, but definitely not for a profile pic.

BTW, the site still says: "Accepted file types: gif, jpeg, jpe, jpg, png, webp · Max file size: 0.05MB"

After some research it seems that PNG had been supported for some time on programs I had not used. I first encountered it in Fireworks and for years Fireworks was the only program that could manipulate it. I knew years later that once I came across programs that could support PNG that they did not have the ability to read the shape data or even the layers of a PNG created in Fireworks, and treated them as flattened. I had figured that this was just another example of some advanced features that were phased out due to lack of use.

Downloaded three different ways, I always get a 37.4KB 150x150 PNG file.

Same here, probably he has a virus attached to the image?

I'd say 7kb is a good difference! Who knows what's stuffed inside!

It's already confirmed by several members.

Thanks for noticing, I too get the size both of you get, very suspicious. By any chance, does the forum perform an AV scan of user uploaded files?

I wonder whether they also introduced this low quality demand on the background image, can someone check? I don't wanna risk mine.

Thanks for understanding, everyone,

While I understand your frustration, I'm pretty sure everyone was serious. I also wanna know if there's a virus scan on the forum, just for the future.

We can't trust a random person on the internet. It's not only about you. You're the least of concerns and interests.

At least three people reported that over 7KB difference in your image. So?

Nice to know and thank you for taking care of potentially dangerous users!

Anyways, the profile picture problem is still there. I uploaded a 44kb .gif image, just like it was instructed by the forum, yet it re-saved to 3kb.
