Google is sending out the following notification: "On May 30, you may lose access to apps that are using less secure sign-in technology", to user of Outlooks older then 2019.

Is there a a work around for this?

I know a couple of people with Google accounts whose "less secure access" was already functionally deceased since about 2020, and the only solution I ever found was to enable 2FA on those accounts, which allowed it to work (with app passwords of course). I myself have been happily using 2FA on my Google account for years, and very much like the app passwords feature.

This is the solution: https://devanswers.co/create-application-specific-password-gmail
but... for this to work you need to first switch on 2FA: https://devanswers.co/enable-2-step-verification-google-account/
...which is a pain.

Ben.

I don't think this will work after 30th of May. Google is not gonna use password verification with 3rd party apps anymore, they are only supporting programs with OAuth 2.0 integration.

I'm not sure that you are right. The thing about the app password is that it does not give full control over your account (that is only possible using the 2FA login which is separate) and you do not need to activate the less secure sign-in thing for it to work.

But, yes, as usual with Google's self-serving choreographed approach it's less than clear what works - I'm not even convinced that Google know how their stuff works.

This covers it pretty well:

I tested several email clients on WinXP that support OAuth2 (IMAP is required). Read this: Yahoo mail and OAuth2

I tested with Google Chrome 49.0.2623.112m set as the default browser on the system

Two programs are best:

  • MailNews - tested version mailnews.win32-20200815-b8025053-uxp-d3383327a-xpmod.7z
  • POP Peeper Pro - tested version 5.1.1

OE6 has stopped working. Has anyone checked if it works with two-step verification?

is there a 2-step verification option?
I try to enable access to unsecured applications
https://www.google.com/settings/security/lesssecureapps
and this message appears. It has been disabled since May 30, 2022.
https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/6010255?hl=en
However, temporary app access still works
https://g.co/allowaccess
But this does not give way to Outlook Express.
Has anyone found the solution?

This has worked on Outlook Express.
I have followed these instructions. This enables 2-Step Verification without the need for 2-Step Verification. This provides a new password for each device.
https://old.reddit.com/r/GMail/comments/t6hhfj/you_may_lose_access_to_some_of_your_thirdparty/

1) Log into gmail

2) Click the user icon in the top-right corner and select "Manage your Google Account"

3) Go to the security page (from the list at the left)

4) [This is necessary for the next step, but will stop your scripts from logging into smtp with your regular password. This is sort of the point of no return. Make sure you are ready to go all the way and update all of your email-sending scripts before continuing.] Enable two-step authentication.

5) Once two-step authentication is enabled, go back to the security page. There should now be a new section called "App Passwords". Select it. You will probably be asked to log in again.

6) Generate a new app password. I put in "Mail" under "select app" and "Other" under "select device," but I don't think any of the information you put it matters.

7) It will give you a 16-character app password which will be shown in yellow.

8) Have your scripts use this password to log into smtp instead of your regular password and everything should work. It will not prompt you for 2-step verification.

Details:
After enabling two-step verification, an error message appears in Outlook Express when trying to access Gmail.

After copying and pasting into tools+accounts, the new 16-digit password for my computer, provided by the Google website, didn't work for some reason.

This worked when I pasted the password when Outlook Express gives an error when trying to access the Google server to try to receive mail in Outlook Express.

Important:
You do not close the tab with the new Google password until you try to receive and also send
Gmail mail. It asks for the new password twice, both when receiving mail and when sending it.

I had previously enabled temporary permission to
https://g.co/allowaccess
But I don't know if that's essential.
