Yep :thumbup, as a matter of fact these tools may actually work in favour of MS, it won't be long before the shills will start writing that "If you are really paranoid, and though it is not recommended, you can run tool x or tool y that prevent Windows 10 to send data to Microsoft, and you can thus enjoy almost fully the Windows 10 experience" or something like that, thus minimizing the other issues with the abomination.

Since you know Gabe personally do us a favor and tell him that. I know there was discussion of all this in the Insider and it hit blank walls

I still like the OS and gonna keep but using these tools to eliminate BS is only method of telling them what we think.........

^ Now this is sociologically interesting. I guess 'Gabe' is Gabe Newell and you're implying that I'm a shill on Steam's payroll. Correct?

Discussing this tool in the [Guide] Disable Data Collection in Windows 10 thread: http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/174160-guide-disable-data-collection-in-windows-10/?p=1105925

First: Obviously I didn't see it when I posted this.

Second: Here it is the info about how it works and what changes it makes in the registry, which may or may not be of some use for other members (You need to login, in order to have access to MDL post).

Well it looks every day more people and also sofware companies are starting to try to stop this spying tactics in Win10

Fourth: As it is usual in all forums any moderator is free to relocate or delete this thread.

No offense intended, I merely pointed out such as a means of cross-referencing the discussion. :)

By the way, you should all know that none of these tools actually shuts Windows 10 up.

With all the registry tweaks in place and a hosts file that redirects over 100 addresses said to be Microsoft data collection servers (AND another 17,000 entries from MVPS) to 0.0.0.0, according to my firewall logs I've STILL seen on my otherwise quiet Win 10 System, svchost, rundll, and others such as "SIH (Silent Install Helper) Client" and "Microsoft Feedback SIUF Deployment Manager Client" try to contact a number of servers online just today in the past 4 hours (listed below).

I've yet to research them, but to say that Win 10 is chatty online would be an understatement.

Possible Windows Update attempts?  Possible telemetry?  Upload of personal data?

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

104.73.38.54:443

157.55.240.220:443

157.56.96.58:443

172.224.177.145:443

172.224.178.197:443

172.224.180.140:443

178.255.83.1:80

178.255.83.2:80

192.116.242.20:80

23.15.5.197:80

23.15.5.213:80

23.4.37.163:80

23.4.43.27:80

23.74.2.58:80

23.74.2.88:80

64.4.54.116:443

65.55.44.108:443

66.119.114.157:443

Who knows?  More research is needed, and it's simply time consuming.  But it's paddling upstream, really.  Microsoft has decided the OS, being "cloud" integrated, is simply going to make all kinds of connections online all the time no matter what settings you've chosen.  Trying to second guess a team of thousands of engineers is not practical.  And there's no guarantee it will work right if they're blocked.

Each address amongst the above and the traffic to/from it needs to be researched.  Then a decision has to be made about whether to block activity, and testing needs to be done to confirm the system continues to function correctly.  That last part is the trick - how can we know whether blocking one of those addresses will not lead to the system being deactivated one day down the line?

In short:  From what I can see, there is no "easy fix" to this, no magic "app" that instructs Windows not to make online connections.

We cannot. That one example of a truly unknowable question. What can be done, be it a 8.1 or at 7SP1, is to draw the line before 10. That cannot be but a personal decision each one has to take on one's own. After one decides to move on to 10, IMO, resistence is futile: assimilation is inevitable.

The "philosophical" issue about this (and all others BTW) tool is  the "false security" feeling it may provide. :w00t::ph34r:

Until someone will do a proper, documented, repeatable analysis of all the "phoning home" the stupid 10 does (and that may well be changed at the good MS guys' whim through an "undocumented" update) and of the effect that each and every Registry/tweak/hosts file/firewall actually produce I find it more than a bit "irresponsible"  to state (like a lot of people does) that the tool (or the setting/whatever) "fixes" Windows 10 privacy issues, there are already tens of articles by the shills that suggest the disabling of a bunch of settings within the "normal" UI and advertise them as "solving privacy issues".

Surely each and every disabled or intercepted/redirected feature decreases the number of possible issues :), but this is far from representing any tool as a "solution".

@dencorso

As said elsewhere, the line has already been drawn (actually it has been carved in stone ;)) in Windows 2000 times, and anything starting from XP (please read as "online activation") onwards represents different shades of gray (though of course the leap from dark grey, aka Windows 8/8.1 to matte black aka Windows 10 is more noticeable)

As jaclaz points out, we have been operating under a false sense of security for some time, though the problem has gotten 10x worse (if not more) with Win 10.

I have recently adopted a "deny by default" firewall stance with Win 8.1 as well, and while it's nowhere near as chatty online, I blocked it from trying to "phone home" not only to Microsoft but also to Google last night.

I have also a Win 7 system that I believe I'll be moving to the more restrictive settings as well, and will see what happens.  But never forget, Sinofsky was quite proud of the "telemetry" they would be basing much of the design of Windows 8 and later on - so clearly Windows 7 is also doing it.

Lastly - and this is a bit scary - we've already seen Microsoft trying to push out updates to Win 7 that increase its online promiscuity as well (KB3021917, KB3068708 anyone?).  Expect that to continue.

First during install I deselect all related to info going out of the PC, latter after first boot once again did same thing, I also put a very long list in host file redirected to 0.0.0.0, (just in case it blocks some of them) then ran Shutup10 blocking every thing and rebooted.

After reboot and make a copy of Firewall Policies ran Windows Firewall Notifier and there were a lot of connections on line, so Shutup10 DO NOT BLOCK all is required.

... so Shutup10 DO NOT BLOCK all is required.

Sure :), that was not at all unexpected  and actually it was EXACTLY the core of my previous post .

  1. Many "technical journalists" (or "shills" or "mindless jerks", choose the one you see more fit)  go around publishing articles saying that a bunch of settings through the UI are "enough" to be not worried about the "phoning home" or that "it is normal".
  2. Some smarter users and software companies have developed tools/scripts/etc. to block more of the ways Windows 10 is phoning home and some (including the "Made in Germany" O&O) tout that the tool resolves the issue.

BOTH are incorrect  (of course to a different extent)

Most people, even if suspecting that #1 is (grossly) inaccurate may well trust the tool maker(s) #2, since here we are talking about O&O (but it is not like they are better or worse than other peeps) this:

O&O ShutUp10 means you have full control over which comfort functions under Windows 10 you wish to use, and you decide when the passing on of your data goes too far. Using a very simple interface, you decide how Windows 10 should respect your privacy by deciding which unwanted functions should be deactivated.

may well induce people to believe  that if you disable everything in the tool then nothing will got to MS (which is not the case).

At the most one can say that the tool gives you more control (which is not full control), it's just about calling things with their name.
