Windows 8 and 8.1 Reg Tweaks

Recommended Posts

~ Adds "Eject DVD-RW Tray" to the "My Computer" or "This PC" Context Menu. ~

Context_Menu.png

This is a improved script from my older Eject version that used nirsoft (which was constantly getting FP malware/virus flags)

and a eject.bat script (that flashed up the dos console instead of being totally silent).

INFO:

- This has been tested and working on a laptop optical drive with Windows XP to 8.1, 32 or 64-bit.

- Very fast response time with ejection of tray and totally silent.

INSTALL NOTES:

1. Use the below Download or just copy the below scripts to a .txt file and rename to "ejectTray.jsE" and "Install.cmd".

1. Then copy and paste the "ejectTray.jsE" file over to the System32 directory.

2. Run the "Install.cmd" batch file (runas admin) to merge script to the windows registry.

REMOVAL:

- Includes remove.reg for any future removal from context menu.

I remember this fix to Let "My Computer" icon be first on desktop, has anyone found a reg or tweak for windows 8.1 that could work?.

I found this http://www.sevenforums.com/general-discussion/36944-make-my-computer-first-icon-desktop-5.html but it dont really say anything about windows 8/8.1 :/

I really hate that documents folder being first each time i reboot my machine since the 2nd monitor makes both monitors blink twice when they get into windows and icons have changed back, sooooo annoying.

You *could* just hide one or both of them, and make your own shortcuts to do just what you want.  Right-click on the desktop, choose Personalize, then click the Change desktop icons link near the upper-left of the Personalization panel.

As far as the desktop icons becoming reorganized, I don't personally see that because I have a desktop in which all the monitors are permanently connected, but here's an idea that comes to mind (if you've not already tried it)...  Arrange the icons the way you want them with both monitors connected, then log off or reboot with them connected.  Then disconnect a monitor, rearrange the icons the way you want them with just the one connected, then log off or reboot with the hardware still in that condition.  I'm thinking Windows should save each arrangement per the desktop size at the time of logoff.

Is this better than Classic Shell in some way?  I'm probably missing something obvious.

Its awesome because its portable & needs no injection into explorer, or a running explorer, & no need for taskbar, & works on a non-clickable desktop, & works with MY NEW TEST SETUP (Post #9). ;)

I guess.  Such a tool might be helpful in an IT environment where people are not allowed to install anything they want.  Does it have to have elevated privileges to run?

If there was something wrong with installing Classic Shell - some problem that choosing to use it long-term causes - I'd be more concerned about those things.  As it is, it's a problem solved.  Completely.  And you can't beat the price.  ;)

2015 Windows 8 Mega Tweaks v 4.1 (SEPTEMBER UPDATE)

Tweaks_4.1.7z

I've uploaded more than 200 tweaks in HTML format to make it easier to see helper files and folder and file paths that need editing; just unzip the files and click on tweaks.html file. All the helper scripts are perfectly safe text files that you must change to a suitable file extension to work. Evidently, the rules on file size uploads were changed at MSFN so I've linked to the same file over at WinCert.

File: Tweaks_4.1.7zCRC-32: d9aed498 MD4: 6d77db24620b5aa2335c1192b142471a MD5: 0b84ccc2e9a9be4a1d6fb58e4c66e678 SHA-1: 30d297906f09d103a4871b678fcc4d46eb6bfadf
  • Version 4.1 has smaller file size, couple of URL links fixed and more screen shots
  • Version 4.0 extensively revised to add dozens of privacy tweaks to combat Microsoft's telemetry updates
  • Installation of tweaks requiring administrative control of registry keys has been greatly simplified by using setacl.exe (443 KB).
  • Can install all tweaks using Windows Post Install using included config.js file
  • Automated "F8" Windows 8 Legacy Boot Install
  • Automate trim command on SSD drives with the correct commands through scheduled tasks
  • AutoIt script to automatically write the exact date of a Windows install on Windows System Property Page
  • The application of the privacy and custom context menu tweaks requires the separate download of setacl.exe (443 KB) and AutoIt (11.7 MB).
  • No other software is needed if you do not need context menus or privacy tweaks
