lightning slinger Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 (edited) If anyone is using Super AntiSpyware Free on 98SE, I would advise them NOT to update to Version 4.25.1012.This new version released in the past few days seems to run very poorly on 98SE, taking five to six times longer to open and freezing up upon downloading definitions updates. Sometimes it even takes Process Explorer a while to close the program.A look on the SAS Forum will show that this is not an isolated case with many 98 users reporting problems.Version 4.24.1004 works fine and continues to download definitions updates with no problem. If this continues and there should be no reason to expect it not to be the case then we will still have a least one decent malware scanner to work with after the recent demise of the Emsisoft A-Squared 9x version scanner.Whether this problem gets cured in a future version is unclear but we may well be looking at V.4.24.1004 being the last SAS Free version for 98 users that works.HTH Colin Edited January 23, 2009 by lightning slinger
llaffer Posted February 3, 2009 Posted February 3, 2009 Looks like Shockwave Player 11 is now working again for Windows 98SE. Just installed the latest version 11.0.3.472 without any hiccups and it seems to be working fine.
Drugwash Posted February 3, 2009 Posted February 3, 2009 Really? How come I'm getting this message then (Win98SE, no KernelEx)?
llaffer Posted February 3, 2009 Posted February 3, 2009 I recently restored win98se from a backup and was updating all software with the latest official updates/versions before making a new backup. Then I was going to do the unofficial updates. Surprised that Shockwave 11 installed and worked. At this point, I don't have any unofficial updates installed yet so I can only guess that there is a conflict with one of them. I got Shockwave 11 from here: http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/alternates/#spIt even says Win98 on there, but not on the System Requirements link right above it. Weird. Before restoring, I did have unofficial updates installed (don't remember which ones but many of them) and Shockwave 11 did not work.
rainyd Posted February 3, 2009 Posted February 3, 2009 Really? How come I'm getting this message then (Win98SE, no KernelEx)? Drugwash, this is indeed strange but looks like it's possible to install the latest version of Shockwave on Win98SE (for Firefox/SeaMonkey but not IE).On the other hand it doesn't work on the Adobe test page (listed as enable in about:plugins).
Drugwash Posted February 3, 2009 Posted February 3, 2009 Tried again - no dice. I use SlimBrowser on top of IE6-SP1. That was just out of curiosity as I don't need SW anyway.
RetroOS Posted February 11, 2009 Posted February 11, 2009 There's plenty of software out there that works with 98/Me...It's just finding the time to compile the list (and search this topic for already existing posts)...Anyway, it will trickle through...I would say this is the best single application for video encoding/converting.Media Players + Encoders + CodecsONGD - FREE - SUPER Video Encoder/Player (v2009.build.35 Jan 5, 2009)--- http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.htmlFile RecoveryONGD - SHAR - Ondata RecoverySoft (3.2) --- http://www.ondata-recoverysoft.com/Rock on 9x Windows Me looks like... BenoitRen Posted February 11, 2009 Posted February 11, 2009 Windows 98SE looks like Windows 95 with oversized toolbars and a web browser rammed through its head.So the only true Windows is Windows 95!See where this is going?

RodgerOver Posted February 11, 2009 Posted February 11, 2009 (edited) Looks like history seen from a global (world) perspektive. Some moments are decisive.WIN98 (SE) was a turning point.GLOBALLY (!), it looks like this:From a European historical perspective:From a Western European point of view, it looks like as if we were going backwards. From an Eastern European point of view we are going forward. From the other side of the world (rest of the world), Europe is West and the US are East, so it looks like this:From a Chinese point of view (Western part of the rest of of the world), it looks as if we were going forward. From an US (East of the rest of the world) point of view, it looks as if we were going backwards. And so on !BUT WIN 98 SE was decisive.Forgot to add the message from Flashplayer:"The features added to Flash Player use the technology in the latest operating systems for performance, functionality, and efficiency. These subsystems are not included in the older operating systems. Additionally, manufacturers will no longer fix issues in these operating systems, which makes it impossible to address Flash Player issues with root causes in the operating system".Roger Edited February 11, 2009 by RodgerOver

BenoitRen Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 Windows 3.11 was the turning point. The succeeding versions of Windows are just an evolution of that.
