1. Windows Vista + won't prompt you for a driver, but will install it in the background. You may or may not end up seeing an "Installing Devices" pop-up from the System Tray, but even this can be configured to hide such notifications. Windows 8, on the other hand, seems to fix this problem altogether, as once you tell Win8 to open UFDs, it opens within a second of you pluggin it in and with no apparent lag time of installing a driver. This seems true even if using different ports or even USB drives that have not been plugged into the system before. So Windows XP is stuck in the middle of USB support progression. With the horrible (if absent) support (except for Altec Lansing speakers) in Windows 95B, to Win98... I can't speak of ME or 2000. Getting better in Vista and 7 and with Windows 8 the best yet.
2. Now that is just scary!
3. Welcome to the MSFN!
4. Matt Uelmen - Tristram From Diablo II, back when you could download all the music from Blizzard's website.
5. It could be many things. Maybe you are missing a critical driver, maybe a driver is the wrong version. Even so, maybe the entire deployment didn't finish. Is the HDD big enough for that, say 20GB or larger? How much RAM on this Dell?
6. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314053 Of course, an offline hive won't have a CurrentControlSet, so you'll likely be using 001. Here is an example of how to use reg.exe with an offline hive:
7. StartRep runs very fast even if it does have something to fix. Sorry I don't know about your backup question. Its still an area I'm lacking in experience.
8. What if you remove the WIndows 7 option with Easy BCD, then "Ubuntu" should be the only one to boot?
9. I might actually have that game! I should hook a CD drive up to my jukebox so I can rip my games ... Real Life - Send Me An Angel
10. Perhaps this is the reason the forum search feature doesn't allow searching for three-letter words. And the rest of that paragraph of yours was just disrespectful. The character restriction is not something we have set, it is in the forum software. It is to prevent searches from taxing the server, especially when on forums that are as old as this one. Everyone in this thread needs to settle down.
11. Undocumented, but you can specify a directory too: Dism /image:C:\test\offline /LogPath:AddPackage.log /Add-Package /PackagePath:C:\packages\
12. Right, Setup doesn't do anything with the line specifying the catalog location. In fact, almost all of my unattends have the Vista catalog in them. Take this out of your XML: <component name="Microsoft-Windows-Shell-Setup" processorArchitecture="amd64" publicKeyToken="31bf3856ad364e35" language="neutral" versionScope="nonSxS" xmlns:wcm="http://schemas.microsoft.com/WMIConfig/2002/State" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"> <OOBE> <HideEULAPage>true</HideEULAPage> <ProtectYourPC>3</ProtectYourPC> </OOBE> </component> Since you are booting into Audit Mode, you aren't going through OOBE pass to process those commands, so it is useless for it so be in there. Since the XML is set to boot into Audit, having UserAccounts in the OOBE pass wouldn't get processed either.
13. Oh I just remembered. On the Vista/7, if the Network Location is set to Public, you can't get to network shares. You would need to set it to Home (don't know if Work would... you know... work... ), At least on Windows 7, if you are set to Public and try to go to a network share, a pop-up appears saying to enable File Sharing, which after doing so will change your Network Location. You can see your current setting in Network Connections, although if the PC is joined to a domain, it might say "domain" instead of "Work."
14. Well there is a program on the Server 2008 R2 CD called Startrep.exe (in Sources) you can try, but you'll probably have to re-do your grub since it might not let you boot into Ubuntu afterwards. Here is some info on that program. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2261423
15. To search for words 3 letters or less, you can use google. For example you can go to google and type this into the search box: site:msfn.org usb xp As far as this issue, it also exists in Vista and Windows 7 as well, however it is more transparent and less annoying. However, the underlying driver model is still there, as is evident that a per-port driver instance can become corrupted in Windows 7, making it so a USB device will not work on a specific port, but will on another. I have a GoFlex drive that refuses to work on either of the front USB ports on my workstation. I think it has something to do with not using the Safely Remove Hardware feature.
16. There is a registry key to change here for the PS2 issue.
17. Well the interesting part of this isn't the fact there is an upgrade deal. That has been done before, but before it was free.
18. There seems to be so much going on in that picture, that I didn't even realise that the background was animated until you mentioned it. Probably could do without it to make a version with a smaller file size.
19. Package Manager (pkgmgr) is deprecated in the WAIK and was replaced by DISM. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/dd490958.aspx http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd744311%28v=ws.10%29
20. Maybe it is this? NetBIOS Frames protocol
21. I'm way behind on ripping video game music... Duffy - Distant Dreamer
22. Yeah, they already inflate their numbers by counting VLK and OEM sales into their retail figures. Now since they are marketing Windows 8 RT and Windows Phone 8 as "Windows 8" they can just toss those numbers in there too!
23. If the W98 machine isn't broadcasting itself, how come the W98 laptop can see it? I want to say that WIn98 uses something that Win7 doesn't. NetBIOS maybe? I can't remember exactly what.
24. If I could, I'd use Thunderbird but it doesn't work with the email server at work. And the newest version of Tbird has deprecated the plugins I had used for it. So now work email is either through the web or on the phone. Everything else I just use the separate websites, since I use my accounts for different purposes. I'd rather not have them combined, but I can see why some would like that option.
