This program you used, Win Toolkit v1.4.0.65, must be outdated. This answerfile would not validate in WSIM since you have empty elements as well as deprecated ones. Typically if you don't specify a language in the XML (such as yours) it should prompt for language selection. So if you want it to bypass this automatically, you need to specify the language options. Which language do you want?

This must be removed. This program is not sanctioned or supported by any of the staff members, nor the owner of MSFN. Branding it as such is a form of impersonation and this is a greater violation than the already pointed out Rule 2e.

This judgement is surprising to me really. All OEMs knew that the OS is supposed to prompt for a choice for any computers sold in Europe from the previous news. That being the case, any computer manufacturer should actually test their systems before approving them for sale. This being such a problem should have meant that no computer having an incorrect first-run user experience should have ever made it into the market to be available for purchase! So how does Microsoft get fined for their Partners not following the rules?

This is working for me but there is one problem. After it kills reloads explorer.exe, IE10 then opens and shows the first-run wizard. Is there any other way to install IE10 where it won't open after install?

That's why having a unique, strong password at every site is the only realistic measure of protection. Unfortunately, this is impossible for nearly everybody without using password management tools. The real danger is reusing passwords and having it revealed at one of the weakly guarded sites you referred to. And then there's social engineering. I'll say that some site or service I use gets compromised about once per quarter, so the danger is real. Also, keep in mind that when a site is compromised, the secret questions and answers float away in cleartext, so one essentially needs to treat them like unique passphrases. A hardcopy of passwords locked in a file cabinet works for me!

A password is only good so that you can access your stuff and someone else can't guess it and get to your stuff. This was fine for quite some time, but in this age of daily website hacks (which reveal that developers and admins take great shortcuts) many passwords just get revealed. No need to have to guess. Only the secure ones are hashed properly, but even some can just be cracked anyways. So for example if you had an account at one of these sites that got their database dumped, it means having a secure password really had made no difference.

What mode is your hard disk in? IDE/AHCI/RAID? Do have have the IRST installed?

If you look at the article (I posted the link) to the step where they put the motherboard in the chassis, on the right side of the picture you can clearly see the slide/hinge. Further down, when the build is done, you can also see it again. The picture of the front make it look like the one in the pictures is an OEM chassis, since it has the square badge. It could be possible to find which chassis that guy actually used and be able to find that exact one. It looks like it could be an IBM (similar badge) but this part of the article is key: So to correctly identify what this particular chassis is, research into AT kits would be required which could be even more difficult to find. The only real clues you can get is the fact that this article was published in 1990, as well as this quote: Update: It is obvious that the one used in the picture is an IBM PC/AT clone, specifically of the 5170. I can only find one clone that is similar, a 12MHz AT clone made by a company called President. I searched for quite some time. I had no problem finding AT cases, but no real luck finding any with a lid like that. I did find some XT cases tho.

If you right-click the file, and choose Open-With, you should see Windows Update Standalone Installer as an option. If not, you can select "Choose Default Program" and should be able to select it.

From the linked txt file, it says that setting it to Master means that it is expecting a slave. I set it to the single drive mode just in case. It still gives a smart error at boot. I checked the BIOS and there are no manual settings to set for the hard disk. Only DMA mode, SMART and LBA, which are all set to auto. The other options for SMART or LBA are disabled, and there are about a dozen choices for DMA Mode. As far as running Data Lifeguard, that is what I am running already isn't it? I can't use the newer version, I tried and gave me a message about the drive not being supported. So I had to download the older version. Another sign of hope is that while I can't seem to be able to access the disk, if I try to boot off of it, I get the 0x7B STOP error. So I will re-run DLG and see what happens. EDIT: I re-ran the test and now get Error 0207 from the Extended Test. The Error code list just says to replace the drive. But it now shows some actual data, including a different CHS. I recently had acquired a computer that I had used a long time ago. The power supply is busted and I'm donating the rest of the parts. I kept the hard drive and decided to see if there was anything worthwhile on it. However there are some problems. Since I can't boot it on the original hardware, I am using an MSI G31 board (the only one in the building with a PATA port) using an 80pin cable. Originally, I had the IDE drive and booted from a SATA drive with Windows 7. Windows detects the drive, but if I try to open it in Computer, the green progress bar never completes. It is a Western Digital Caviar AC23200 3.4GB. I booted into the BIOS and it shows it as Primary Master and 211.1TB! Sometimes (not always) the POST will show this error: Using DLGDIAG 4.15, I am running the Extended test now, the quick test was not available. The info in DLGDIAG shows just symbols, as can be seen here: Corrupted hard drive by Tripredacus, on Flickr As far as expectations, I expect the disk to have Windows 95 or 98 on it, and likely be FAT32. Everything I try to do that does anything with the disk is extremely slow. For example, it took 20 minutes or so to give me the menu in DLDIAG. EDIT: Test completed. Code 0250. The topic title should probably stay the same, since most people recognize it. No Microsoft employee has caused this problem. I'm not sure what this is supposed to mean. Server 2012 is just the newest OS I have installed on a computer I use at work. I could go back to being Vista Business x86.

I deleted your duplicate post. The unfortunate nature of the thread going so off topic and become more generalised it the reason it was moved to General Discussion. Originally the idea was to put it in Technology News but users expressed that putting it so low on the forum index would decrease its views. I suppose that is possible, but either way, you could say it has been upgraded... GD is fairly unused. I wish there was an easy way to split the topic so to keep the original "impressions" part separate from the "news and reaction" posts from later on. The topic has been brought up multiple times and was put up to a vote. There wasn't any specific "we must do this" type thing, more of a "what should we do with this thread." I do not think I should tell you exactly what the vote results were, but I can tell you that no one chose to just close it.

I know what you are saying. I don't know why it is so different either across different browsers either.
