I recently had acquired a computer that I had used a long time ago. The power supply is busted and I'm donating the rest of the parts. I kept the hard drive and decided to see if there was anything worthwhile on it. However there are some problems. Since I can't boot it on the original hardware, I am using an MSI G31 board (the only one in the building with a PATA port) using an 80pin cable. Originally, I had the IDE drive and booted from a SATA drive with Windows 7. Windows detects the drive, but if I try to open it in Computer, the green progress bar never completes. It is a Western Digital Caviar AC23200 3.4GB. I booted into the BIOS and it shows it as Primary Master and 211.1TB! Sometimes (not always) the POST will show this error: Using DLGDIAG 4.15, I am running the Extended test now, the quick test was not available. The info in DLGDIAG shows just symbols, as can be seen here: Corrupted hard drive by Tripredacus, on Flickr As far as expectations, I expect the disk to have Windows 95 or 98 on it, and likely be FAT32. Everything I try to do that does anything with the disk is extremely slow. For example, it took 20 minutes or so to give me the menu in DLDIAG. EDIT: Test completed. Code 0250. Can't find what this code means. Final code 0250 by Tripredacus, on Flickr What are the chances that I can access this data? What other tools/tests can I run?

What happened to Deeper Impressions thread ?
Tripredacus replied to SIW2's topic in Site & Forum Issues
The topic title should probably stay the same, since most people recognize it. No Microsoft employee has caused this problem. I'm not sure what this is supposed to mean. Server 2012 is just the newest OS I have installed on a computer I use at work. I could go back to being Vista Business x86. -

Tripredacus replied to SIW2's topic in Site & Forum Issues
I deleted your duplicate post. The unfortunate nature of the thread going so off topic and become more generalised it the reason it was moved to General Discussion. Originally the idea was to put it in Technology News but users expressed that putting it so low on the forum index would decrease its views. I suppose that is possible, but either way, you could say it has been upgraded... GD is fairly unused. I wish there was an easy way to split the topic so to keep the original "impressions" part separate from the "news and reaction" posts from later on. The topic has been brought up multiple times and was put up to a vote. There wasn't any specific "we must do this" type thing, more of a "what should we do with this thread." I do not think I should tell you exactly what the vote results were, but I can tell you that no one chose to just close it. -
why did css3 kill the web?
Tripredacus replied to vinifera's topic in Web Development (HTML, Java, PHP, ASP, XML, etc.)
I know what you are saying. I don't know why it is so different either across different browsers either. -
Post Pictures and Specifications of your computer here!

Its a very strange looking chassis. -
I brought it up because both Server 2012 and Windows 8 have the ability to show different boot graphics depending on the hardware. If these OS are on a hardware (motherboard/notebook) that use UEFI 2.3.1 and the BGRT ACPI table exists then it will not show the standard boot screens. http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/158372-windows-8-and-bgrt/

The topic has been moved to General Discussion and re-opened. A link-back is still available in the Windows 8 section. -

why did css3 kill the web?
Tripredacus replied to vinifera's topic in Web Development (HTML, Java, PHP, ASP, XML, etc.)
The vendor prefixes are designed to allow for backwards compatibility with older browsers. They are meant to be temporary. But I think that as long as these concessions are made to older browsers, the longer they will stay around (hello IE6-7) making developers think they need to keep that compatibility there. -

JFYI, this topic has outgrown its original purpose and has become a catch-all for various related news articles and reactions/discussions. I will leave it open for now, but its life is running out. I recommend that if you want to continue these discussions, to create topics for each particular subject in the Technology News section, located here: http://www.msfn.org/board/forum/63-technology-news/ And make sure to keep those topics on topic, for example don't make a topic about the Office 2013 EULA and then start putting links to articles about Surface or Nokia phones, instead make a new thread for those subjects. If any of you want help in splitting off discussions from this thread into new threads in Technology News, send me a PM with post numbers.

Sudden shutdown when playing video or Youtube
Tripredacus replied to Sp0iLedBrAt's topic in Windows 7
You can test your video card with OCCT: http://files.extremeoverclocking.com/file.php?f=214 -
Here is the list of switches for BCDEdit including Server 2012. My Server 2012 runs headless so I wouldn't be able to test on mine.

Which progress bar?

Not sure if this is what you want. Here is an example that might help: c:\folder\dotnetfx40_full_x86_x64.exe /q /norestart

Windows 7 won't release Readyboost memory on flash drive
Tripredacus replied to rosawodsii's topic in Windows 7
I've never done that, since ReadyBoost ate all my USB drives (3) I've used on various computers. If you are using this key on multiple computers, I think FAT32 would give you the least amount of headaches. -
I guess browser games are "freeware", might as well add Quake Live to the list then huh? And all those sites with Flash games?

You can't inject an nVidia (or ATI) inf as-is because of how the INF is written. If you install the driver manually then use a driver extractor like Driver Magician (or similar) which backs up the INFs, you can then inject that one. I had done that once on Vista, but since installing drivers that way are not supported by the manufacturer, I haven't done it since.

Best way to create shortcuts silently
Tripredacus replied to jinkazama's topic in Application Installs
Alternatively, here is how to do it using AutoIT: FileCreateShortcut ( "c:\program files\folder\file.exe" , "c:\users\public\desktop\File Name.lnk" , "c:\program files\workingdir" , "" , "Description" , "c:\program files\folder\iconfile.ico" ) -
It's possible you are having a problem with your video card. I have used this tool OCCT to test video cards. My last one had a few hundred errors after running for 1 minute. Maybe it can tell you something as well? http://files.extremeoverclocking.com/file.php?f=214

Post what TV tuner it is in case someone else has the same problem.

Why was MSFN down yesterday and why is it still slow?

Does anyone know of any USB 2-3.0 to Gigabit Ethernet adapters that are capable of doing a PXE boot? I found this one on Dell's website: http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&sku=a6003700 But I talked to Startech tech support and they say that it doesn't support PXE, nor do they sell any that do. Any suggestions? I know that Argon sells one but it is only Fast Ethernet.
