  1. I haven't been able to get the GWX icon to appear on the system. Running the task manually fails. I had seen it once, but apparently another Windows Update caused GWX.exe to no longer function! Anyways, there is a new Application Event Log called GWX-Ins. The icon is supposed to show up after a reboot, but doesn't. After clearing and restart, it makes 6 logs: - GWX Main: Launched by task - GWX Main: Launched for tray startup - GWX CompatLib: Markers read successfully - Machine is not MDM managed - Windows is activated - GWX Main: App failed to start hresult: Element not Found Anyways you can upgrade using one of the downloads here: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 Which is what I am doing now.

  3. asdasasa new to the forum. Please do not bump posts so soon or make topic titles in all caps. You can read the forum rules regarding these.
  4. Dell spec sheet says the 650 can use this: http://www.dell.com/downloads/us/products/precn/ws650_spec.pdf Ark shows that CPU uses 1066MHz FSB... http://ark.intel.com/products/30795/Intel-Xeon-Processor-E7340-8M-Cache-2_40-GHz-1066-MHz-FSB So I couldn't find a list of compatible processors for that model. On Dell's site that might be possible but it requires a service tag. http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/product-support/product/precision-650/configuration
  5. Perhaps you can find something in c:\windows\windowsupdate.log.
  6. I don't think this is a thing. I've been reading that the free Windows 10 does not use the original license of the machine at all, but a runtime or volume license to activate.
  7. Well at least MS is being upfront about it... I wonder if this would protect them against lawsuit when something will invariably go wrong.
  8. Huh. That's what Unchecky uses as well. What's the difference between 0.0.0.0 and 127.0.0.1? A webserver (IIS/Apache) may be running on the computer, for one. AKA "home" is a valid address.
  9. We've known about the Express Settings thing for a while. You should edit your post and link to the reddit threads you got this information from, presuming that author wasn't doing anything illegal.
  10. What I'm hoping is if I end up with a broken OS, maybe I can learn how to fix whatever the problem is.
  11. I actually set the system up not as an optimal system, but more likely either a regular joe type thing OR (more realistically) "likely to fail" type of configuration. This time around, I am actually using matched size drives* however they are not anywhere close to being new. More importantly they are quite old! AND they are 1x 80GB Western Digital and 1x 80GB Seagate! The only reason why I chose to do a RAID1 was because of a user on Technet who mentioned that when he upgraded his PC to Windows 10 IP, it broke his mirror. I also purposefully chose Office 2010 Starter because I know it is not compatible with Windows 8.1. The real test is whether or not I can use the Windows 7 recovery partition after the upgrade. Presuming I can even do the upgrade since I may have to remove Office first. However the RAID test is also important because if the upgrade removes the RAID software, this could be a big problem. So far I am not at the point where I have gotten a GWX notification. I may have more updates to install, so I will have to see in the morning.
  12. I figure I might as well do an upgrade test to see how well it works out. Feel free to post your upgrade experiences here too. I will be using an Asus H97M-E (CSM) board, using RAID1. - Windows 7 Pro SP1 x64 installed on MBR disk with Recovery Partition. - Intel IRST to manage the RAID (this did not work in the preview) - Office 2010 Starter What's the over-under on this actually working?
  13. It makes sense really. Sounds like they are using a Runtime license, which is what Windows Embedded uses. I'll try an upgrade this afternoon and take a look-see for myself.
  14. Do you happen to know what the 3 updates are that you installed?
  15. I remember some years ago, watching some presentation of a car show where a car manufacturer was showing off their newest technology. Of them, similar to keyless ignition, was some method of having keyless locks for the car doors. I don't remember exactly what the details were but I do remember, at the time, I thought it was a monumentally bad idea and I would never buy that car.
  16. Actual requirements are Windows 7 SP1 or Windows 8.1 with Update 1. Windows 8.0 or Windows 8.1 without Update 1, to my understanding, would not even get the GWX update.
  17. An add-on to replace a removed feature... how original.
  18. The term "better" implies its use is based upon opinion. Arguments over which OS is "better" than another are stupid because you are basically saying your opinion is correct and the other person's isn't. There is no way to benchmark specific features or compare numbers of opinions, which is why these types of debates never get resolved. This community is home to people who both use Windows 98 and Windows 8.1 computers. The reason why someone would keep an old OS around must certainly mean that person's opinion is that the OS is better at doing something than another OS. Then there are things we can measure. People (or bought-out journalists) laud the fact that Windows 8 can boot to the desktop in less than 10 seconds. So what? I had a PC that was Windows 95 that could boot up in 6 seconds. Which one is better? Who cares?
  19. It reminds me of the flight super-power argument. Having flight as a power would be great, but you'd have to make sure you survive learning how to use it in order for it to be effective. A thing these website articles don't really bring up is... how do we stop?
  20. You are not allowed to sell hardware on MSFN. Read the forum rules!
  21. We will wait for someone to make an Ad-Block program for Windows itself.
  22. We don't want MSFN to turn into Technet where people don't read posts and respond with form answers... The OP may find it difficult to open OneNote files if said software has never been used. Additionally, the linked problem is not the same as the one being reported.
  23. Looks like that "automatically connect to networks shared by my contacts" thing has been figured out and it doesn't sound good. http://reviews.gizmodo.com/why-the-hell-is-windows-10-sharing-my-wi-fi-passwords-1719900675
  24. While it is a valid question, this is likely to be a trap topic for spambots to reply in. First post is a copy/paste of a post on another forum where that has occurred, you can find it with these google terms: "corrupt read only tables" calebbaxter
