Ah thanks, the setup didn't make it at all obvious how to install it with a local account, but it did once I found how. As you say, must have been because it's the Pro version.

I managed to install Windows 11 on my ancient (for a computer) 2009 motherboard. After a few Windows Updates I now have Windows 11 Pro 21H2 build 22000.160. First impression is that it's pretty much Windows 10 with a slightly different GUI. Mainly the Start Menu is different, other changes, like to Explorer, seem to be just cosmetic, different icons etc. The settings menu does look different, but its functionality is exactly the same as far as I can see. I was very pleased to find that some things which I thought might well have been gone are in fact still there. The old Control Panel is still there, to my great surprise. Windows 7 Backup and Restore is still there, which pleased me as I do use it. I was pleased to find that I could still use a local account, exactly as on Windows 10. I had read some reports saying that was no longer possible, and you had to sign in with a Microsoft account. Internet Explorer does seem to be finally gone. A stub remains that just goes to the MSN homepage on Edge if you run it. All the apps seem to be pretty much as on Windows 10, and work exactly the same. Start Menu live tiles have gone completely, replace by boring fixed size static icons, which I think is a great shame, as I found the live tiles useful on some apps, like weather, news and photos. Why they removed them I don't know, perhaps they thought they were a waste of resources. Apparently Open/Classic Shell no longer works properly on Windows 11 at present, which is a huge shame, but I hope that can be fixed by its developers. So, fairly underwhelming IMO.

How to install Windows 11 on "unsupported" hardware.

Windows 11 found and installed a driver for my Nvidia Quadro 2000 absolutely fine, it's working just as it does on Windows 10. -
How to install Windows 11 on "unsupported" hardware.
Dave-H replied to GD 2W10's topic in Windows 11
@GD 2W10 Pleased to report that I managed to install Windows 11 on my 12 year old motherboard! I got a Windows 11 ISO using the uupdump.net procedure detailed here, but it wouldn't install as it of course failed the system requirements check. Thanks to your workaround detailed above, I managed to get around that and do a successful install, which seems to be working fine! It had to be a clean install, so I'm not using it seriously yet, and it will be a long time before I will, but good to find that it is possible to update even on my old hardware. Gives me something new to play with anyway! -
My Browser Builds (Part 3)
Dave-H replied to roytam1's topic in Browsers working on Older NT-Family OSes
I'll certainly consider New Moon as an option if (and when) I have to finally abandon Firefox 52.9 ESR. At the moment I keep it mainly because it still works fine 90% of the time, and it synchronises with my other Firefox browsers on Windows 10 and on my phone. Actually AFAIK Roytam1's Serpent is the closest to Firefox 52.9 ESR, not New Moon. -
Ah, understood! I just thought I'd mention it just in case.

I managed to get WebGL working with Firefox 52.9.1 ESR with my old ATI video card. See here and subsequent posts.

My Browser Builds (Part 3)
Dave-H replied to roytam1's topic in Browsers working on Older NT-Family OSes
Interesting you should mention that! I don't use New Moon, but I'm having exactly the same problem suddenly with Facebook comments using Firefox 52.9.1 ESR. As you say, you can now only type one character. What I've found I have to now do is to type the first character, then press the "End" key, and after that I can then type the rest. Very strange! FWIW I don't have any problem with the bookmark sorting. -
My Browser Builds (Part 3)
Dave-H replied to roytam1's topic in Browsers working on Older NT-Family OSes
As your browser GUI seems to be set to English, I can only assume that you have some bookmarks with non-English characters at the start of their names, which is causing them to apparently sort incorrectly. What happens if you edit the affected bookmarks and change their names to English equivalents, do they sort correctly then? I don't think that the system locale is relevant here. -

That is odd! What language is the browser actually set up in? -
Root Certificates and Revoked Certificates for Windows XP

I can't imagine why it wouldn't, but I'm sure someone with a Vista installation will confirm or deny that! -

Dave-H replied to roytam1's topic in Browsers working on Older NT-Family OSes
The usual way to sort bookmarks on Mozilla browsers is to right click on the bookmarks' folder, and select "Sort by Name". It can't be done in the list of bookmarks itself, and A>Z is the only sort option. -

If you want a link to a specific comment, just click on the three dots to the top right of the comment, and select "share". -
Thanks, I've referred the GPU-Z dev to that thread to see if it helps. At least he will know that he's not the only one having this problem!
-
This from the GPU-Z developer. "Grrrr .. all I did was update my Visual Studio 2019 version to the latest, without touching the compiler (still using v141_xp). But apparently they made some change that uses this API call*, which isn't available on Windows XP. Will search for a solution." *AcquireSRWLockExclusive

I queried this on the GPU-Z forum as there's no mention in the 2.41 changelog of XP compatibility being withdrawn. One of their mods said that XP was still supported, and would be "for as long as possible". I unpacked the 2.41 file with Universal Extractor, and when I run the unpacked version I get the message "The helper module .NET Framework 4.6 could not be found" so I guess that's the problem. I don't think .NET 4.6 is available for XP. I've made them aware of this. Whether they can fix this, and will, remains to be seen. Addition - Also I'm getting in the Windows System Event Log "Application popup: GPU-Z 2.41.0_unpacked.exe - Entry Point Not Found : The procedure entry point AcquireSRWLockExclusive could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.DLL."

Adobe Flash, Shockwave, and Oracle Java on XP (Part 2)

The very last entry in this list should do you. You might have to register with Oracle to download it. It's no big deal to do though. -
360 Extreme Explorer Modified Version
Dave-H replied to Humming Owl's topic in Browsers working on Older NT-Family OSes
Glad to help anyway. Just as an aside, I ran the test again with FF 52.9.1 with uBlock Legacy disabled, in case it was affecting anything. I got exactly the same result, just 5 warnings, no skips.- 2,340 replies

OK, I ran 360 Explorer, straight out of the box, and this was the result on my system. It looks good BTW! I don't know what that proves, if anything, but the result is certainly worse than Firefox 52.9.1.- 2,340 replies

Well I've never actually tried any version of 360 Extreme Explorer, so it's a good opportunity to give it a go! I'll report back tomorrow, as I'm about to go to bed here in England! Cheers, Dave. -- 2,340 replies

The unofficial Service Pack 4 for XP contains all the POSReady updates. I've never needed to use it myself, so I can't comment on any problems with it. Interesting that the fact I have the POSReady updates might be the reason I'm getting different results on the browser test. Of course a POSReady updated installation of XP has had a further full five years worth of security updates compared to a normal installation!- 2,340 replies

360 Extreme Explorer Modified Version
Dave-H replied to Humming Owl's topic in Browsers working on Older NT-Family OSes
Well on Windows 10 x64, for me Firefox 90.0.2 x64 scored 9 warnings, 0 critical, 28 skipped. Edge 92.0.902.62 got 16 warnings, 1 critical, 20 skipped. (The critical failure was "cookie set by JavaScript should not be sent over HTTP".) Quite reassuring in a way that a browser that hasn't been updated for three years on an operating system that hasn't been updated for two years (with POSReady updates) seems to be giving one of the best results!- 2,340 replies

The developer of Tab Mix Plus wanted to try and produce a web extension version when Mozilla dropped support for the legacy extensions format, but it's never got anywhere. A shame, because it's a fabulous extension. I still use it on FF 52.9 ESR on XP, and I really wish I could use it on Firefox 90 on Windows 10, but sadly it's never going to happen.
