  2. You don't make any sense. How can copying a 44-byte header represent tens of Mb of audio data? The only part you have correct is the ~176Kb/s. Everything else depends on your HDD's filesystem. SafeDisc is not for protecting audio. It's a (rather weak) protection for programs. Right answer wrong terminology. 44100 samples/second * 2 bytes/sample * 2 channels.
  3. http://www.smartdraw.com/ Or, if you're looking for something a bit more powerful, http://www.autodesk.com/autocad
  4. You can just thread some thin insulated wire through the side of the socket and tie it to the heatsink.
  5. Or the cable itself could be loose. Error correction/retransmission just prevents it from completely cutting out, and the only thing you notice is a slight delay.
  6. Might be caused by overheating. If so, a new one would probably fail in the same manner. Check how hot the HDD is. It should be slightly warm but not hot.
  7. When you're a manufacturer, that 0.05 multiplied by the massiev amounts of product becomes a huge savings. I see similar wierd things on cheap mobos - "as long as it works" seems to be their idea.
  8. No, probably wants to make it look like IE B) You can use a hex editor. Copy + Paste. The icon should be somewhere near the end of the file.
  9. 1. http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=39573 2. WTF?
  10. Performance or appearance. Take one. I'd prefer the former.

  12. I'm quite sure his modem or the modem power supply is at fault. The power connectors tend to be loose. As a result the modem resets itself with only slight vibration.
  13. If the hard drive is showing heavy activity, maybe you should consider a defrag. If you secure your system properly you should NEVER get infected. My current installation of Windows 98SE dates back to early 2001 and my XP from 2003. No viruses or any other malware. Haven't had to reinstall since. It's not really about staying away from "malicious" sites, but securing your machine so those sites don't have any effect (I browse everywhere on the Internet - I'm sure some of the sites I've been to would severely infect some other user's machine, but not mine.)
  14. MHDD is a good diagnostic program. Supposedly can repair bad sectors too... http://hddguru.com/content/en/software/2005.10.02-MHDD/
  15. They're using the ReactOS kernel for NTFS... lol Maybe you can use those ReactOS files with the SysInternals driver too. RO version is still here: http://download.sysinternals.com/Files/NtfsWindows98.exeHaven't bothered looking for full ver but it's probably out there on the Internet.
  16. Also, if you're behind a NAT router and not in DMZ, none of this matters.
  17. I add my own ID string so I can check if it's a fixed file or not without using hex editor.
  18. That makes perfect sense, since visual themes = bitmaps, and when you're scrolling it has to bitblt them - IE7 "programmers" probably wrote their own software-bitblt routines that completely bypasses the hardware bitblt (several orders of magnitude faster) that's been in every video chip since the early 1980s.I ask, do you really care how a couple of buttons look?

If you have a memory that bad, then maybe you should replace your RAM...
  20. M$'s software quality has indeed declined... my experience with an early beta of Vista wasn't as bad as yours, but not being able to easily modify the files on your own hard drive and use unsigned drivers was irritating, not to mention it ran slow. M$ just seems to be wanting to lock everything so that users can't do much in the way of customisations.
  21. Perhaps you've never heard of "download managers". I used to have dialup, I still downloaded movies and other huge files (~2Gb @6KB/s) -- it wasn't too bad; a few days wasn't that long to wait.
  22. You shouldn't have port 137 open to the whole Internet anyway.
