  1. And just as quickly, it seems there is a solution. The problem appears to have been a DNS issue that is not altogether uncommon, one that is endemic to some ISPs. The solution was found in a thread on forums.microsoft.com; here is the specific address if you want to read the whole thread: download.windows.com not available The instructions to solve the problem, should anyone else encounter it, are as follows: I hope this is helpful to anyone else who has had trouble with Microsoft downloads. Thank you for indulging me. And LLXX, thank you again for your prompt reply and your help.
  2. Thank you for such a prompt reply... The problem isn't finding the link but conducting the actual download. For some reason I fail to connect with the servers for downloads. I can navigate to the page describing the downloads, or to the page to validate my Windows install. But the moment I actually have to download a piece of software, I can't connect. The page will come up as unable to load, or if I use a download manager, it can't connect to the servers. Just to be certain, I tried the link you gave me and I ran into the same problem. And as expected, since I was running Windows Live Messenger at the time, within a minute of the failed download it had a problem and was disconnected from the network, then immediately reconnected.
  3. Let me begin by saying that I am new here. I appreciate any help that you might be able to provide, and I apologize if this is a repeat question. I wasn't quite sure where to post it, because it doesn't seem to be an OS issue. I have been having a great deal of difficulty downloading software from the MS download center, and trying to do so can cause issues with other MS products. For some time I tried to download Windows Live Messenger, but every time the download page was unable to load. I had to resort to a friend downloading the install and sending it to me. I got through that problem and thought all was OK, until recently. I tried to download Windows Desktop Search 3.0 from the download center. To do so I have to certify that I have a valid copy of Windows, which I do. The initial validation page will not load the ActiveX control, so I click for the alternative method, which is to download a program called genuinecheck.exe. But when I click to download genuinecheck.exe, that page is unable to load. Furthermore, if I am running Windows Live Messenger at the time, it briefly loses connectivity with the network and has to re-establish its connection. I have tried to test downloading other software from the download center, and suffered the same results. So you are aware, I am running Windows XP MCE on an HP zd8000 series laptop. I have ZoneAlarm Security Suite v6.5.737.000 running, as well as AdAware's AdWatch. My connection is wireless through a Motorola SBG900 gateway. I am happy to provide any other info that might help solve the problem, because I am currently at a loss. Is it a software tweak? A hardware problem? Malware? Any help you might be able to provide is greatly appreciated. Thank you all for your help.
