  1. No, I don't see anything like this on our switch. And I am out of suggestions on how you can fix yours. :-( -John

    On & Off

You could then use nnCron LITE from http://www.nncron.ru/ I have used it for a few years and it works great. -John
  3. Here are a few ideas. We have a Dell PowerConnect 5224 here. You could call Dell Tech Support and/or look at the web interface for errors (under statistics -> counter summary). You could also try (as an experiment) to isoloate the traffic by setting up VLANs, through the web interface of the switch. You could run a packet sniffer on several PCs at once, like Ethereal, and see what kind of traffic you are seeing - maybe it is a bunch of broadcast traffic. Hope this helps, -John

    On & Off

This is what I do. In my BIOS, I have the computer itself turn on every day at 6:30AM. I also have it configured so that if the power cuts off & then comes back on again, the system will boot up. In Windows XP, I have a scheduled task that runs at 10:30 PM every night to turn off the computer. It does this by running 'shutdown -s -t 55'. This way, if I am on the computer at 10:30, I can run 'shutdown -a' to abort the shutdown process. -John
  5. Maybe I wasn't clear enough. When you click on Start->Run, a dialog box with the title of "Run" appears. My program is an 'enhanced' version of this dialog box. For example, it would have a checkbox so that you could pipe the command to MORE or to another pager-type program of your choice. So now, Start->Run would pull up my program which I would title something like "Enhanced Run". Is there a way to replace the standard version with my version? -John
  6. Is there any way to replace what happens when I click Start -> Run. I want this to launch my own standalone .exe file that I have written. Or is this built into explorer.exe and/or shell32.dll and there is no way to really change it? Thanks, -John
  7. See the thread in the 'Software Hangout', Whats the best Defragmentation Software. It is a sticky, so it will be at the top, but here is the direct link: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=18603 -John
  8. Yes it is for XP. A quote from the web site: "Win2VNC works with Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP." If you want any more information, I suggest you look at the web site: http://fredrik.hubbe.net/win2vnc.html and then: http://win2vnc.sourceforge.net/ -John
  9. @echo off date /t > c:\temp\date.txt set /p TODAY=<c:\temp\date.txt echo Today is %TODAY% How is that, for starters? -John
  10. This is how Win2VNC works. You have two computers each with their own monitor. The two monitors are physically very close together -- similar to a dual monitor configuration. Since you have limited desk space, you don't want to also have two sets of keyboards and mice. Now, you would run a VNC sever (I prefer UltraVNC) on your 'secondary' computer and Win2VNC on your primary computer. You configure Win2VNC so that is knows if the secondary monitor is to the left or to the right of your primary monitor (the actual terminology is West & East). When you move your mouse all they over to the right edge, for example, Win2VNC will notice this. What happens now is that Win2VNC starts sending keyboard & mouse events to the secondary computer's VNC server. When you move it back to the left edge of the 2nd monitor, Win2VNC stops intercepting these events. The final result is that you get to control two computers with only one keyboard and mouse. Since it is not sending video, it is very fast. You can not even tell that your keyboard & mouse events are being transmitted over a network. -John
  11. If it runs 'amazing', then why don't you swap your opteron 170 @ 2.6ghz for his p2? -John
  12. This is an old picture of a P2-233. It used to be my router for my cable-modem internet connection. This was before Linksys, Netgear, etc. made comodity routers. It was Linux and ran Squid cache, DNS caching, DHCP, ipchains firewall, etc. -John Click Here For Full Size Picture
  13. This is not exactly what you want, but you may be interested anyway. Check out Win2VNC. Essentially it is VNC, but only processes keyboard and mouse events. Since it does not process the video it is very fast. You can't even tell that you are using a remote keyboard and mouse. http://sourceforge.net/projects/win2vnc/ -John
  14. Since it is only 15mb and you can see in under Win 95, why not copy all of the files off of the partition to a temporary location? Remove all of the files and then copy them back from your temporary location. You will have, in essence, defragged the partition. -John
  15. Try one of these: FreeUndelete http://officerecovery.com/freeundelete/ Restoration http://www.snapfiles.com/get/restoration.html Good luck! -John
  16. I've got BartPE (or was it UBCD4Win?) booting off of a 512MB usb key. On one system, the boot process is very slow, but on another system it is faster than booting from CD. So YMMV. -John
  17. You could try using something like UPX to compress exe and dll files. This would save you some space. http://upx.sourceforge.net/ -John
  18. GSS does not officially support creating images of server based OSs like 2003. However, I use Ghost on my Dell 2850's that have their PERC 4 raid adapters. I use GSS and / or Ghost on a UBCD4Win boot disk. -John
  19. Check out http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/ Their Image for Windows and Image for DOS are quite less expensive than Symantec Ghost. -John
  20. You might consider Ultimate Bood CD 4 Windows. It is much better than Bart PE, as it builds on top of it. http://www.ubcd4win.com/ -John
