  1. My memory tells me i think i saw in the help files one time that you can't use passive mode for ftp server. Maybe someone can correct me if im wrong. -gosh
  2. You're not being very patient giving 3 hours for a reply. Recycler should be hidden, so if you're not seeing hidden files/folders then you wouldn't see it. Otherwise i don't see how you could do that. I don't remember ever seeing a policy or anything to disable the recycle bin for just one partition. This reminds me of a call i had once. The guy was dual booting on 2 different partitions, using ntfs. What he wanted to do was delete a file putting it in the recycle bin, then have it show up in the recycle bin of the other OS. It was really weird. Long story short i told him to live with it - the recycle bin was made to delete stuff, not to be used like the shared documents folder. He didn't like my answer but sometimes, that's the way windows is made. The morale of the story is it would be nice if you could delete the recycle bin for one partition, but windows wasn't really designed like that. -gosh
  3. well make sure your admin account has a password. It sounds like you've been screwing with policies. Go through secpol.msc and make sure everything is correct. -gosh

  5. just close the shell. When the shell is closed the pc will auto restart. You can do this in cmd by typing exit. -gosh
  6. why dont you just change the GinaDLL registry key? That way when msgina.dll is modified you won't have any problems. -gosh
  7. Great info, although i perfer to make my own inf's by hand of course. -gosh
  8. The modem diag for the most part is worthless. It basically "talks" to the modem, and tries to see who made it. Talking to the modem doesn't neccessarily mean the drivers work, although a lot of people try the test anyway. Assuming the phone line has dial tone, another option would be to use hyper terminal. My understanding of hyper terminal is it doesn't use the modem drivers to dial, it uses it's own code. Open up hyper terminal and try dialing a number. If you hear it dialing, then you're looking at modem drivers. If it doesn't dial, then something is physically wrong with the modem/phone line or windows is majorly broken. And of course try another phone cord. Also, disable any phone services. One time i was troubleshooting a simliar issue for 2 hours, when the customer said, "oh by the way, the same time my modem problems happened i bought a phone service that zaps telemarketers". I had her disable the service, and then she had dial tone again. -gosh
  9. Welcome to the forum. This forum has a search tool that will let you find whatever you want. -gosh
  10. Pretty name, Shannon. You'll really get hit or miss results with the visual effects tweaks. The problem is the visual effects settings are applied at logon, and if you apply a reghack the registry is changed but the GUI won't reflect the changes. I would recommend using sysprep to customize the visual effects. Last i looked, Microsoft doesn't support any other way to change the visual effects, but some people on this forum have had some luck. -gosh
  11. why not just make a new section? In general, you can make a new section in txtsetup.sif and it'll be used during setup. You don't have to use the section used in txtsetup.sif -gosh
  12. This isn't a registry tweak but it just as useful. To disable the 'email to' link in the Send To menu, unregister sendmail.dll regsvr32 /u sendmail.dll You'll need to do this at about the 13 min mark. This is more for security than anything else. Email to is new to xp, and could pose a security risk. -gosh
  13. I hide OE by default using oeaccess=off, to increase security. You really shouldn't mess with IE since many different programs expect it to be there and won't work if it's missing. -gosh
  14. maybe you could use powercfg.exe from the server 2003 reskit? You could edit hivedef.inf to make sure the monitor turns off after a period of time. Just configure power options the way you want, then in regedit search for powercfg (should be in HKCU), and export it to a .reg file and import it during setup. -gosh
  15. I know political posts are frowned upon here, but i wanted to comment on a documentary i just saw - The Fog of War. See http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0317910/ The movie is about Robert McNamera, sec of defense under kennedy and johnson. It really sheds some light on the whole vietnam war. After watching it i really see how similiar vietnam is to the current war in iraq. Iraq is not a vietnam-yet-but then again we only suffered half the casualities in vietnam half way through. Just because there isn't a high death toll in iraq doesn't mean it won't become a vietnam. In the documentary mcnamera admits that the golf of tonken incident - that caused congress to give johnson the freedom to wage war against north vietnam-never happened. It makes me think of the weapons of mass destruction causing us to enter iraq, when it now seems there might not have been any weapons in the first place. It also shows the lack of understanding of the enemy. Mcnamera and Johnson considered vietnam a part of the cold war, and if they went communist the rest of the region would follow. But in the documentary some guy that was head of n. vietname says it was a civil war, and they never would bow to russia or china. It really sounds like iraq, again. We see iraq as a part of the war on terror, but iraq probably sees the conflict as america flexing it's own muscle, maybe in an attempt to help israel. Again, both sides see a different cause to the conflict. At one point Johnson says vietnam is a war against evil, a war against terror. Bush has made a similiar argument. Now i am not saying iraq is another vietnam - not yet at least. What i am saying is the documentary really makes you think twice about the iraq problem. I am not saying iraq is a bad or good war. I am just saying it makes you look at iraq in more of a historical context. -gosh
  16. when xp launched i remember some people were having trouble copying a banana file. The cause was a bootdisk on bootdisk.com named the cdrom banana, which caused files named banana not to copy (it's because the name assigned to the cdrom in dos is reserved and cannot be used by anything else). So if you're using a bootdisk make another that doesn't name the cdrom banana. -gosh
  17. I have a linksys router and ive never had any problems. Port forwarding has always worked fine for me. His article is rubbish: 1: He's complaining that his 4 YEAR OLD router isn't working right 2: Rather than taking responsibility that he has no idea what he's doing, he blames the firmware. 3: He quotes steve gibson, the biggest loser on the internet. Just ignore the article. -gosh
  18. Those 3 registry keys all will disable the shared documents folder. Options.inf just adds some new settings to folder options. Since the only way to disable shared documents in the GUI is tweakui (maybe gpedit.msc for pro), i added it to folder options so users can easily enable/disable it. The policy is the preferred way to disable the shared docs folder, since most people know about the policy, but not as many know about the delegatefolders one. When i was making options.inf i just went to winguides.com and looked for anything that interested me. I copied the descriptions into the .inf to keep it organised. -gosh
  19. I've never tried to do that, you could maybe hex setupdd.sys and maybe disable those messages there. You would only save about 5 seconds though. You would save a lot more time by removing stuff you don't need, that loads at the bottom of the screen. To do this just load setupreg.hiv as a hive in regedit, then edit the currentcontrolset and remove stuff you don't need. Remember: text mode does not have plug and play. Therefore any drivers that people would need are all loaded, no matter if you have the harware or not. I sped up setup safely by about 5-10 seconds by just deleting the cpq drivers (compaq). You should be careful though, because if you remove an essential driver the computer won't boot. -gosh.
  20. You could probably query setupapi.log, or query HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdrom\Enum\0 or 1 for the sring. You could also look in the registry to see if it has a recording tab. -gosh
  21. If everything works until you sysprep, then sysprep is removing some registry keys. After you use sysprep, you can use winpe to load the ntuser.dat hive, and check the registry entries. You also want to load the system hive to make sure you have the right entries. My site gosh.msfnhosting.com/server2003.htm shows the exact registry keys you need. -gosh
  22. great. If you want to you can slim it down, this should work: Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Setup] "SetupType"=dword:00000002 "SystemSetupInProgress"=dword:00000000 "CmdLine"=hex(7):43,00,3a,00,5c,00,57,00,49,00,4e,00,44,00,4f,00,57,00,53, \ 00,5c,00,53,00,79,00,73,00,74,00,65,00,6d,00,33,00,32,00,5c,00,6f,00,6f,00, \ 62,00,65,00,5c,00,6d,00,73,00,6f,00,6f,00,62,00,65,00,2e,00,65,00,78,00,65, \ 00,20,00,2f,00,66,00,20,00,2f,00,72,00,65,00,74,00,61,00,69,00,6c,00,00,00 "SystemPrefix"=hex:d6,0b,00,00,00,c0,40,0a "SystemPartition"="\Device\HarddiskVolume1" "OsLoaderPath"="\" "OobeInProgress"=dword:00000001 -gosh
  23. you can only ENCRYPT the key. It works only on xp pro sp1 and server 2003. See http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=328356. XP SP1 will not give any help, server 2003 will give full command support. XP SP1 supports the same commands as server 2003, it just doesn't advertise it. That's the only way to keep the key secure, any other method you can get the product key. As the article points out, encrypt can only be used on volume license media. So it looks like you're out of luck. Microsoft only cares about the rich corporations, they don't care about the little guy with a 10 computer classroom. During setup anyone can press shift + f10, then type notepad c:\windows\system32\$winnt$.inf, to get the product key. The product key is only removed from $winnt$.inf when setup is done. -gosh
  24. all you do is set startmenuinit to 2, and that'll clear the MRU. -gosh
