Attempts have been made (I helped with one) but results are far from reliable. I believe that most folks in the codec community will tell you to stick with the Alternative.
The general populace likes the term hacker. It is ingrained now. It could be changed, but not likely to something that is popularly used as a racial slur (cracker). It confuses people, and most don't care enough to make a distinction.
I would enjoy a standing workspace. For a while, at least Maybe I'll try just VNCing to my workstation from my laptop while it is in a spot that makes standing convenient.
Most people on MSFN are savvy and agree on that general definition. But, in my experience, the general public still considers "hacker" a negative term (the bad guys / crackers).

Cnet has an article about a soon-to-be-released sniffer called Ferret that may compete with Wireshark. Wireshark does an amazing job so I'm wondering how the proposed features will help Ferret stack up against the champ.
