Oh hi, I just made a related post over here: Also, "Honey" made a presentation at DEFCON two years ago about the tricks in the first post. Check that out for even more info.
Within the context of other OSs...I hope we see Apple increase their presence in the Open Source community. Jobs' walled garden was one of my chief complaints.
One thing is that the original netcat is, I believe, mostly stale now. There are many variants including CyptCat and SOCat. Here is a popular opinion: http://sectools.org/netcats.html
I see your point but Andre is one type of person that still represents those of us who immediately disable all of the >win2k desktop skinning stuff. My preferred method is to use advanced properties and change to high performance mode.
Having a hard time understanding why people are interested in win8. Phone OS on powerful desktop hardware? Maybe the "ease of us" folks would like that...but the power users in this community? I don't get it.
I see that you've fixed it now but I wonder why you didn't just upgrade to ie9 instead of wrestling with the issue? Not that I necessarily endorse ie9 but I've really heard nothing but good things about it from ie users.
For MP3 here is a decent guide using VLC: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/2719/how-to-convert-video-files-formats-to-mp3-with-vlc/ And for Youtube you can try this one which seems to be effective even on sub-sites like Vevo: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/easy-youtube-video-downl-10137/
Oh I'd seen plop being used in the linux community but didn't realize windows folks were using it. Generally speaking, are you enjoying it or often encountering issues like this with plop?
Maybe he is having the problem where TrustedInstaller gets confused about what files it is looking for and where to find them. I've seen it happen a few times on different win7 boxes. You point right at the correct file but the installer insists that is wrong. I recently had to change the wifi drivers on a thinkpad due to slow speeds so I feel your pain!
Tackling as in you're going to update the Wiki? There is an 'edit' link on the lower right if that is what you're looking for but I think there are special privileges on our wiki.
