  1. Interesting. I have a project coming up in which this might come in handy. Thanks!

  3. If your main goal is media streaming then you might want to consider upgrading your router as it won't go faster than 100mbps wired and 54mbps wireless. You can probably stream 720p as long as your environment isn't too noisy but that would be your bottleneck. Good job on the planning!
  4. Please standby...
  5. Funny coincidence. I was just reading this thread earlier today while trying to determine if I should enable prefetch for an SSD-based box
  6. Tomato looks neat, but doesn't support newer devices
  7. The security features seem solid, it is the wireless performance that I've had issues with. I'm actually considering reverting my firmware right now because DD-WRT's WLAN streaming is garbage. BTW, please change your avatar. Animation is not allowed here. Thanks

    Windows Updates

Should be able to do it this weekend. Ping me on Sunday if you don't have it by then, as I am quite forgetful.
  9. Please do. I've been waiting for this to happen all year. Alright then. But I haven't been working out lately so I'm a bit tubby. Anyway, here you go. Happy birthday buddy!
  10. I'm pretty late to the party but I'll still jump out of the cake if you want me to. You know you want me to.

You should attend your local Community College and take some "computer classes" so you can learn how to use the internets safely. Failing that, we'll hold your hand through the learning process Oh BTW, would you mind mirroring hfslip.org when you rebuild your site? I'll be taking my server down for a while for maintenance soon.

    Noob.
  13. So many price-haters! Compare it to other devices in the same class. This one is reasonably price against the competition.
  14. unRAID is pretty nice but it runs Slackware as the base OS. Slack is great and I've used it off and on over the years. But it doesn't have robust package management and dependency checking like, IMO, a modern distro should. I would be more enthusiastic about running it as a long-term solution if it was based on RPM or DEB. So I ordered a ReadyNAS Pro Pioneer. Looks like it should meet all of my needs except that it isn't rack mountable. If I end up being really happy with it then I'll likely eBay it and buy a couple of the ReadyNAS 2100 series rackmount boxes.
  15. Update to the X-RAID data...there is also X-RAID2. http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=19414 Looks like this was introduced in the RAIDiator 4.2.1 firmware last September for devices that support the feature (not all of them). Too bad QNAP et al. don't have competing technologies in this respect. So it looks like I've found my Drobo-killer as far as appliances go. But unRAID is looking pretty cool so I'm going to play with that before buying a ReadyNAS.
  16. They are likely similar to these nogs which, last I heard, are the cheapest around: http://www.amazon.com/EyeClops-Vision-Infr...d=2069TFTYSUT9V
  17. I'm starting to think that the proprietary RAIDs have the "killer app" that will limit my options. Drobo's BeyondRAID, Netgear's XRAID and Lime's unRAID are all non-standard RAID implementations that allow you to more easily mix drive sizes/speeds and provide for a n incremental upgrade path (upgrade one drive at a time). These features seem like they can make life so much easier. BeyondRAID seems to be the most robust of these options while XRAID the least so as it requires you to upgrade all of the drives sequentially. unRAID is somwhere in the middle and it is basically implemented as JBOD plus a parity drive. And it runs on Slackware. FreeNAS has a ZFS trick to run nested RAID5 that comes close to these solutions but it is a fresh hack and not supported. So I think I'll build a testbed unRAID box and see how that goes. The 3-drive version is free and there seems to be good userland support. If it meets my needs then $80 for the Pro version seems reasonable.

  20. I heard that Microsoft transitioned their usage of ephemeral ports as of Server 2008. They previously used 1025 to 5000 but apparently will now use a higher port range. Potentially the higher ranges as seen in most Unixes, or even the IANA-endorsed range. Is this true? What was the reasoning behind this change?
  21. Sorry I wasn't clear. My last post was the result of the OEM finally sending me a new chip. I installed the new chip and that fixed all of my problems. It came with a pre-paid shipping label to Intel so I've already shipped the old, defective chip back to them. My only cost in this was the time/PITA of it.
  22. After much coordination and jumping through hoops with my vendor's tech support I finally convinced them to send me a new chip. All fixed now! The new chip runs great and is clear evidence that my old chip was defective. Thanks guys! Chalk up another win for MSFN tech support Here are some notes from my testing of the bad chip in case it helps anyone else:
  23. Lean and mean? Maybe, except for the extra code to track everything you do and report it back to Google. Keep an eye out for a 3rd party "sanitized" version after it gets released.
  24. Yes, the bandwidth is shared in Cable. But you shouldn't need to worry about it much as you'll usually get most/all of the speed you paid for. That is pretty fast. Perhaps the site or your ISP did some caching and that threw your results off? You can try some other speed testing sites to see how the results vary. http://www.google.com/search?q=related%3Awww.speedtest.net
  25. No worries. We get this sort of thing a lot
