I can't find that folder in the registryReally? Not there??? REALLY?Read this and go from there.
-
Open Windows Explorer and click the following in order - "View" tab -> check "Details" "Tools" tab -> "Folder Options" -> "General" tab -> "Use Windows Classic" (DON'T EXIT) (same) "Tools" tab -> "View" tab -> - check "Show Hidden..." - UN-check "Hide Extensions..." - UN-check "Hide Protected..." ("OK" for WARNING) Click "Apply" button then click "Apply To All Folders" button Now you can see EVERYTHING. You can "Reset Defaults" on any page later to UN-DO. Your PC. Create a folder on C-Drive (e.g. "XPNLITE") using "File" -> "New" -> "Folder" (make SURE you name it) Copy "I386" FOLDER from DVD to INSIDE the "XPNLITE" folder. Create these INSIDE the "XPNLITE" folder (missing - must be why nLite thought Service Pack 0) - WIN51 WIN51IC WIN51IC.SP2 Keep all folders marked "on original" and DELETE the others - Apps - not on original (the junk/bloatware) ASMS - on original COMPDATA - on original DIST - not on original Drv - not on original (your DRIVERS - MOVE from "I386" to inside "XPNLITE") DRW - on original Fonts - not on original Inf - not on original (but MIGHT need contents) LANG - on original SYSTEM32 - on original WinSxS - not on original Download Netherlands-language Network Install Service Pack 3 from here (CHANGE to "Dutch") and save to "My Documents". and get the OEMBIOS files and put in "XPNLITE\I386" folder. You'll need a good KeyFinder to get you INTERNAL key (not the one on the COA sticker) - WRITE IT DOWN SOMEWHERE. COPY "XPNLITE" folder to your "My Documents" (to save for later). Point nLite to the "XPNLITE" folder and ONLY INTEGRATE SP3 FILE you downloaded and allow it to BURN TO CD. This is your "first try" BEFORE Integrate Drivers (the ones inside the "Drv" folder). You MAY not need these since you can get all of them from here. Burn to CD the "XPNLITE" folder that you saved in your "My Documents" folder. You now have a COPY of the unchanged "XPNLITE" folder on CD, an XP with SP3 CD made by nLite (without ANY extras OR Drivers), AND the original Restore DVD. Since you STARTED with SP2, the SP3 Slipstream "overlayed" any HP-modified files Please note that you WILL have some extra HP-files you really don't need inside the "I386" folder - that's the reason I gave the date of "2004" for your files (anything NOT "2004" BEFORE you used nLite you DID NOT NEED). You'll need to Boot from the nLite CD, FORMAT the C-Drive, ReBoot, then Install to that C-Drive to TEST. After that, you'll want to do a DVD-Restore to get your Drivers integrated for a final run IF it works.

[Resolved] HP NC8000 - Wireless PCMCIA Problems
submix8c replied to ThetaEpsilon's topic in Windows 9x/ME
According to this there should be something for Win98, but the D-Link site doesn't provide it (apparently). I found this that CLAIMS to be good for Win98. It also looks as if thecontents is a CD-"rip" based on the AUTORUN file. Also appears to have Docs. 56mb tho. http://members.driverguide.com/driver/detail.php?driverid=1447167 edit - BEWARE! It also appears to have some "trialware" in it (LARGE files). edit2 - the FTP folder APPEARS that the older versions may be ok (a/l INF says so) ftp://ftp.d-link.com/Wireless/wna1330/ edit3 - a file "ar52119x.sys" is missing but this one may work (?) (INF is NOT any good!) ftp://lizzi555.dyndns.org/Download/WLAN/Atheros/3_3_0_156/Driver/ HTH -

Drivers - whether good for 98 or not is unknown (looks like only 2K and XP) - http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=364184&prodSeriesId=364182&swLang=8&taskId=135&swEnvOID=1093 I'll venture to say that the "Generic" in your photo is going to bite you as I believe that's the PCMCIA you speak of (actually a TI and "generic" doesn't work). edit - USB Controller - see this (at bottom) - also this thread Modem Controller (odd it shows up here when gooooogle)? - http://wikidrivers.com/wiki/Motorola_SM56 and here 02Micro (can't remember how to use the ID part to access the Driver link) - http://contents.driverguide.com/content.php?id=190858&path=O2MICRO%2FWINXP%2FO2MMB.INF AHHH! Works like this and doesn't look right(?) - http://members.driverguide.com/driver/detail.php?driverid=190858 May/maynot be any good? http://members.driverguide.com/driver/detail.php?driverid=1257814 -

re: Restore Floppies - this describes the floppy contents. NOT just a "boot floppy". HTH edit - JAZ 2g Internal SCSI specs - https://iomega-na-en.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/112 Manual (online only, apparently) - http://www.iomega.com/support/manuals/jaz2i/home.html "Sign Up for Support" - https://iomega-na-en.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/12227/kw/iomegaware Not very helpful... Useless link that points to "redirect"/nothing for you - http://www.iomega.com/support/documents/10285.html Some info/filenames here but links to inaccessible FTP site - http://pw2.netcom.com/~deepone/zipjaz/download.html And a side note - the JAZ drive requires that the SCSI card be recognized first (but you knew that, right?). Latest IomegaWare is available IF you sign up for an account. AFAICR, I had to do that for ZIP-100 drives I had (and got rid of since I had no disks). https://iomega-na-en.custhelp.com/app/cust_alp/p/8,60 edit (again...) if you KNOW the filename/location in the FTP it's accessible (just downloaded the 1st file listed in that PW2-link I gave). FWIW, here is a listy of files on the FTP site ftp://ftp.iomega.com/english.public/_readme.txt Still, no clue as to the use of Backup if it's inaccessible under DOS... -
"APPS" is all of that garbage software that you don't want. I assume that "DRV" is your drivers. You will (probably) need at least one other WIN51IC.SPx file ("x" is a number). Do you have an "SPx.CAB" in the I386 folder ("x" is a number 1, 2, or 3)? FYI - "Standard" dates for XP files are: No Service Pack - 2001 Service Pack #1 - 2002 Service Pack #1a - 2003 (removes JAVA only) Service Pack #2 - 2004 Service Pack #3 - 2008 There will be many "modified" files in your I386 folder with different dates. If you have SP2 or earlier, it may not matter. If SP3, it may cause some problems recreating it. Some links given propose using the I386 folder on your Hard Drive instead of from the CD. This would be your "best bet" since the Reload "separates" the non-XP folders to the C-drive, just like the I386 folder. Do you have an I386 folder on your Hard Drive? If so, look at the contents and compare to the DVD - they WILL be different. Please answer the two "do you have" questions to ensure that you will get a "cleaned out" XP install. You may keep your nLite'ed files for the time but MIGHT need to start over, depending on the answers you give. Side question - what's your computer's model (HP Model #???)? Click spoiler for some generic info (spoiler is to remove "clutter" info)
-
Look at this. The I386 is much too large and probably follows the folder scheme of the link. Also look here for some basic information on an HP Recovery Partition that you MIGHT have. Here and here is also some (relatively) good info. Also look here. You'll need a good KeyFinder to get you INTERNAL key (not the one on the COA sticker).

@rloew - I had edited my post. It all depends on the chipset. Bear in mind that my E521 HDD is NOT set to AHCI AFAIK (only options are No RAID or RAID, apparently RAID-1 only) but the DVD (PC is ALL SATA-II) is NOT recognized in DOS without using the "special" Dell SYS-file. No "special" drivers seem to be needed (?) for the HDD connected (No RAID in BIOS) so must be AHCI=Off/PATA/IDE (?). Notice that GCDROM.SYS hasn't been updated for a while to include ICH9/Newer-Intel or the Newer nVidia, whether AHCI or NOT, it's STILL attached to a SATA port and apparently NEEDS a CD/DVD driver for DOS. You should be so kind as to update that module for other users with this problem, since it appears that the source code is available (FreeDOS). (U B such a kewl dude and all...) Ennyhoo, the FYI is here for anyone GOOOgl-ing / searching MSFN... (Please note again that I nicked this stuff out of the Restore Boot Image for my E521 - wen NUCKIN FUTZ figuring out the problem of a basic independent DOS7.x floppy disk.) More on the DELL driver (oldest version - I have the two newer and use the A02) - http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/disk-drives/f/3534/p/17281906/17412118.aspx http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/DriverDetails?driverId=r56407

OK... I just HAVE to chime in on the SATA CD/DVD issue. I've seen this type of questions/conversation before and haven't spoken out. I have a Dell Dimension E521, SATA-II ONLY (no PATA) and GCDROM does NOT work for DOS. You MUST use Dell's proprietary CD/DVD driver to get it to function. I had to SPECIFICALLY make a Boot Floppy just for it to get access to it. If anyone needs the details for the file(s) and AUTOEXEC.BAT/CONFIG.SYS let me knwo... ONLY if all other methods fail, PLEASE. Trust me, it was a real head-scratcher (did NOT work) and I used WinME to do it . I could double-check the Win98 out if need be, but the file(s) are the same. The reason for using WinME was because the HDD was/is SATA-II (apparently PATA-mode) and larger than standard Win98 useable. If anyone else has done this WITHOUT using the proprietary driver (particularly for E521 nVidia nForce430 Chipset), feel free to correct me. I had to yank the file(s) from the Boot Image (also available in a file on their FTP). More info (extcd.sys inside file R123008.EXE) The "MSCDEX.EXE" was from the Boot Image and not sure what version/who made it since it's compressed with PKLITE and doesn't easily "unpack". Not really sure if it's proprietary or not.edit - ...and MAYBE I just used the GCDROM.SYS wrong? http://sourceforge.net/projects/cdromdosdrv/ http://help.fdos.org/en/hhstndrd/base/gcdrom.htm (search for it) - http://www.mdgx.com/drv.htm also some info on "failure to function" - http://www.computing.net/answers/dos/dos-dvd-driver/17073.html Oddly, the nForce 430 says that its MCP61 here - Mine's Geforce6150LE(?) and "gcdrom.sys" specifically states Here (a FreeDos page) specifically states to alternatively use the "extcd.sys" file. Here is some ODD-ware (HP FreeDOS) that may/may-not work with ICH9/other. STILL, "gcdrom.sys" (v2.3) may not work as it is ALL up to ICH8-only - http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/disk-drives/f/3534/p/18143014/18266000.aspx (go down to the GIGABYTE post + links) Jabbering here at 911 - http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?showtopic=18722 IOW, YMMV...

Directly connect two machines via phone cable?
submix8c replied to tgp1994's topic in Networks and the Internet
BTW, Serial is a route (but slow), and Parallel is also a route. They both are Direct Cable Connect (same concept), Parallel being "faster". Just in case you don't get the Modem thingy going. BUT, by all means, keep up the experimentation. If it DOES work, we'd all be interested in the process. -
Hooo-BOY!!! Had a heck of a time isolating where to download the LATEST of both HFSLIPFC and HFSLIP. For some strange reason, most links on the website fail for me. Ennyhoo, got them from GOOOOGLE'ing... Addendum: DOH!!! should have looked in UpdateList Table#6. {OT}Playing with both nLite and HFSLIP, in addition to manual CMD-style using -X- Updates{/OT} FYI - This is where I go for "bad" pages. HTACCESS? . Errr... This is where I got into trouble.
-
Yes... Have you looked there? Get the string listed and do a GOOOOOGLE search and hope you find Windows8 drivers for it. In fact, the links given may have them (e.g. Realtek Audio). Download the package and see if the INF-file has that string in it. If so, then VOILA!!! From Realtek But it WILL work if the VEN_DEV string is present. I do NOT know if Win8 drivers are there.IN FACT!!! the Gigabyte Website has Windows 8 drivers. Did you look there? http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3415 (above is for your Rev 1.0 board) AND it appears that there are only 3 drivers needed, all others must be within Windows8.
-
If you'd be so kind as to specify, then assistance may be forthcoming. <--NeededIf you in fact have a fully functional OS installed try looking in Device Manager for each Hardware (e.g. the Realtek Audio) by right-clicking "Properties" and clicking "Details - the exact VEN_DEV will be listed and you proceed from there.
-
you point out the "requirement"...
-
??? SCROLL DOWN a bit to "Command-Line Options". (sheesh!) edit - ...and yes, you WILL have to add to "runonce"... It ALSO states where in the REG "Registry/File Location of The Stored Keys". As I don't have Wireless, just try it.

OK... It has a 2MB Buffer and apparently (http://www.cdrlabs.com/forums/gsa-h22n-and-udma-t22887.html)Can anyone make heads or tails of this? Hmmm... don't know about the CD/DVD WIKI's, but the PATA gives a link to the PDF: http://www.t10.org/t13/project/d1321r3-ATA-ATAPI-5.pdfon page 351: "Ultra DMA modes 0, 1, 2, 3 and 4 have maximum transfer rates of 16.7, 25, 33.3, 44.4, and 66.6 MB/s, respectively." IOW, the first two WIKI's must be lacking further info re: a Combo DVD Drive and must be inaccurate? Bear in mind, WIKI is user-contributed. No time for further investigation right now - keeping the OT subject open for CD/DVD IO, ok? I limit read/burn speeds to prevent mechanical failure.
-
You are correct, Sir Jaclaz - OP is unaffected. Post was an FYI/OT for anyone else visiting this topic.
-
re: ATA33 speed. True enough, but there are some out there that go UDMA Mode 4 (66.6 - I have one), requiring the 80-wire connection to use it. Worst case, you'll reduce the transfer speed but it should be ok.
-
The answer is no! Why ask again?

Windows 95 2.1GHz CPU Limit BROKEN!
submix8c replied to LoneCrusader's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
A couple of details needed - 1 - "Virtual PC 7" - what's that? It appears to be the Apple Mac version. What OS is the Host? Do you mean VPC-2007? 2 - How did you install? CD-Boot ("attached" ISO image) or Floppy Boot? -
Connecting a Windows 98 and Windows 7 through a network
submix8c replied to KelvinTwister's topic in Windows 9x/ME
OK... I meant "Pardon Me - My Mistake - you have TWO links. I inadvertently referred to the wrong one. Guest Account - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/300489 http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc751488.aspx Google xp secure "guest account" which includes a "discussion" of it here - http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r21583104-How-secure-is-the-Guest-account-in-XP-Pro-SP3 Please note that the Guest account is applicable "across the NT-OS board"... ALSO note that NOWHERE does anyone suggest the tactics that you propose (via the link). It's not JUST an "opinion" but a general CONSENSUS. You've already found that the correct info for the connection was already here (in spite of the links you provided, then finding you'd jumped the gun). Please also note the associate links I gave referring to PROBLEMCHYLD's posts (see post #47 and following...). The registry settings LOWER the security already, true? AGAIN, the method for 2K/XP/2K3 is SECURE (ref. ACL's)! If you like, I'll restate it as EXTREMELY unwise. You're begging to be hacked... But, by all means, go ahead. ???"deleted"??? Be that as it may... ...and not "p.sd off" - just presenting correct (AFAIK) information. For the record - http://devilsworkshop.org/tips/networking-windows-9598me-n-window-2000xp-lan-ipc-problem/6/ -
#1 - Have you by chance set in Device Manager (for the CD-ROM's) the same Start/End Drive Letters, limiting to just a single letter? (don't have a USB CD, so unsure if that's how it works)#2 - Huh??? Where did you "uncheck" such a box? I must misunderstand the phrasing - you left a "?" off of the sentence thus making it a statement of fact. You COULD try disconnecting the USB CD, booting to SAFE mode, go to Device Manager, and removing both CD-ROM drives, reboot and see if the Internal one shows back up. Does it even SHOW in Safe Mode / Device Manager? ...AAAAAND also refer to Ponch' post above...

Connecting a Windows 98 and Windows 7 through a network
submix8c replied to KelvinTwister's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Pardon - you gave TWO links and the SECOND one is (pardon me but...) a STUPID idea. The GUEST account is NOT SECURE! Use MY method as given and you NEED NO insecure accesses! That's kind of like NOT putting a Password on the Administrator account.
