theres no reason a USB keyboard wont work. on almost all new dells theres no PS/2 port, they're going USB on everything almost, so why wouldn't it work for you? keyboard and mice ports are not exchangeable...different signals on the pins. and about the fully unattended. he'd have to remove the CD and then put it back in during the XP bootscreen for that to be possible, or else it would go into an endless format disk cycle.

i've got a 9 year old monster with a boot time after POST of about 30 seconds or less. Dual Xeon 700mhz CPUs @ 784mhz 100mhz FSB, 2mb L2 cache. in terms of technology the two computers can't be too far apart from each other. i don't defragment, i rarely use System Mechanic Pro, and i've recently started mucking around with autoCAD like programs [K-3D]. granted i have over a gig of total RAM, i can only completely access 640mb of it. its all in how you keep your box running. i don't schedule scans of any kind, i don't even see the need to...i just run CCleaner when i feel its a bit sluggish. also, when you're using nLite, it depends on what you remove, not exactly how much. i also don't use Sp2...that could easily be a major difference. i use SP1, and have stumbled across a Windows XP Pro cd that was before the service packs...its a possibility for this computer if not 2000. being kept tidy without cramming too much on the hard drive is better than constantly servicing the computer

i have Nero 5.5 not sure if i'll be able to get another one...5.5 should be fine, but eh. i prefered WMP for audio CDs...take what i can get i suppose.once i finish building my new computer [hopefully next week] i'll be able to put all this in effect.

well, i haven't tried 7 yet, but i own 6, and its alright. really, if you want to make an old computer better, either downgrade the OS, or slipstream, with nLite. System Mechanic pro is basically a RAM defragger, HDD defragger, and CCleaner smashed together with a cute little GUI..of course there are more features, but i have AdAware SE, Avast, and Comodo Firewall, i see no point in using its spyware cleaner, or its private data clearer [as its quite annoying to go back and fix all those forums and website passwords]. instead of looking for an expensive product, you should look into freeware applications that can do the same thing. CCleaner is a very good one, many many people here use it, as for a RAM defragger, i'm not sure what to tell you, i hardly defrag my RAM as is, so i don't want to seem like the blind leading the blind on that.

using WMP is fine, i have WMP 9 for Windows 2000, what i don't have is support to rip as mp3. i don't deal with WAV files because they take up too much space, and they don't have the quality that i normally deal with. i'm able to save as mp3 with Adobe Audition in Windows 2000, and play mp3 in Winamp [i don't use WMP as my media player, just cd ripper]. i'm not sure what version of Nero i have lying around somewhere, but i can try to find it and use it, i think it came with a cd burner my sister got years ago. i know that windows 2000 is up to the task, but i need to be able to rip to mp3, as thats the easiest format for me to deal with. small files, good quality, and its what my entire library is.

that and by "law" of computers, it wouldn't be 3, it could be 4, 8, 16, but not 3.
-
but whos going to want to hear it technical? jk.. yes, but the motor needs a certain current to start, so it'll draw what it needs...which is why you can access the BIOS of a laptop with less current than needed to fully start the laptop. that and i don't exactly think its an electrician thats asking [otherwise they'd more than likely be able to say it temself]

http://www.memtest86.com/ you may want to check the packaging/labels on the sticks to find out what it is. mixing ECC and non-ECC can cause similar problems to the ones you're having.

i've got this very old tower, so i wanted to just have it run Windows 2k, but i've come across a few problems that drove me to using XP. maybe people here can give me an idea or help me along the way here. 1) i need mp3 support in WMP. to date, i'm unable to rip an audio CD as mp3, although i've added to option to the menu through registry hacks, no encoder has let me do it though. 2) i need a way to have easy CD burning support. is there a way to integrate Imapi from XP? when i'm finished building my new computer i'll just have a CD burner in here, so theres no need to worry about DVD support. i have software like Sonic Record Now, but using WMP for music CDs and windows for data CDs is much easier. thanks in advanced...this machine just doesn't take XP very well, and i seem to be pushing the limits with it.

whats in the board right now? you'll need speedfan to do this. are the new sticks non-ECC or ECC? and what is the original if they're all the same: look at the refresh rate of the RAM [normally 15.6us] and its speed, PC100 or PC133. then look at the new sticks and see if they're the same.

that and even with undervolted fans, they always draw 12v to start...its just how it all works out.

external optical drive! laptops can have different power setups than PCs. best bet is external stuff. USB install is also an option, as its harder to corrupt the files, but also harder to configure.

the only other idea i could have would be switching between nVidia and ATi...the two never get along...

I'm not sure what to think of this. nuhi, whenever i go to www.nliteos.com and go to the downloads section and try to download non-beta version 1.3.5 Avast Anti-Virus keeps shooting up saying theres a virus. i'm on my way to bed, so i can't post more, i tried taking a screenshot, but it wont appear, when it first found it on my external [where i keep a folder of my most commonly installed apps .exe files] i didn't believe it, because i installed it on my other computer with no problems [same firewall, save anti-virus]. then i went to try and download it, and i found that. thought you should know asap. -bonestonne

find the specs of the cards, your old one and the new one. more importantly, find the core clock and memory speed. if the new one is slower, then thats why. if the new one is faster then its just not getting along with your rig.

Defrag, run CCleaner, restart, then try again.

lol, actually its Mat- Su - ____ - a couldn't be that hard to find...great sensorship...i must say. either way, NMB fans aren't the greatest.

what probably happened was that either screensaver or idle triggers the logon screen. if its from a screensaver, just go to the screensaver tab [right click on desktop>Screensavers] and uncheck password protect. if its just from idle, then you'll need to go around the settings more, i can't remember how that worked.

if you've got plenty of time and a spare drive, you could install linux and see if its able to decompress the files. theres .RAR support for linux if you check the synaptic package manager, which is how you install most of every program you need. not entirely sure about 7zip though, i've never even had a 7zip file, so i can't give you much info on that. if it fails in linux, then theres definately something wrong somewhere... more importantly, if you open up speedfan and you look towards the bottom where it has all the voltages, what are each of them reading? if you don't have enough voltage, that could be a problem.
-
NMB...you know, i actually have a fan lying around thats by them...in all honesty, its loud, and its not all that great. the fan blades are very thick, but do sweep, so theres plenty of pressure, however the noise is quite annoying, and when vibrating against metal, its even worse. Yate Loons or Nexus 120mm fans are the best choice you have, quiet, easily undervolted, and they move plenty of air.

if your HDD is SATA, then you need to make sure that IDE/PATA is enabled in BIOS, and that your drive is set properly [ie:Master, Slave or Cable Select, via a jumper on the back] if your ODD is SATA, then i don't know what to tell you, that should be automatic.

if you like to know you clicked your button, then don't get this...its very sensitive, so basically you know you clicked after it happens. the scrollwheel that goes in any direction, thats excellent, i have to say, i have tons of fun with it. as for the side buttons, i don't use them at all...i've used the wired one many many times. don't use it for gaming, you'll hate it. its more of a workstation/basic computing style mouse with features, not exactly the rugged ones.

AMD computers generally use less power overall compared to Intel. Undervolt it, and you'll use even less power. if its not going to ever get a really big beating, a single core AMD CPU will do fine while using almost no power, however, you can also look into the different versions of a specific CPU, as there are certain AMD processors that are lower wattage than others, such as a 64W version compared to maybe an 85W or so...that all helps in saving power. at the same time, if the computers going to take a heavy beating, generally it'll pull more juice, so that will defeat the purpose somewhat, however even still, it would most likely use less power than a regular system. i would say debate between a mobile or AMD cpu, they'll use less power...its just dependant on how big you want it to be. a mobile core could easily pass mATX with plenty of room for what you'd need, but if you go AMD, you have the choices of onboard DVI, dual LAN [in some cases], HD audio etc. i haven't seen an Intel based board with onboard DVI, so if thats something you want, that would be something to consider. what will it be used for, and more specifically, what do you want on the board compared to having to add to the build.

Just got 1 fixed and another problem arrise
bonestonne replied to Messerschmitt's topic in Hardware Hangout
not sure if you're up to this, but if you boot into linux, mount the drive, and then look around when you first open the drive, you may see the file. if you do, then all you can do is reinstall, if you can't see it, you need to replace it. now, this is not the greatest of ideas, but it will work. i wouldn't suggest it if you've never used linux before. chkdisk will most likely fix the problem though. i believe that once your in the recovery console, its "chkdisk -f" without the quotes, and it forces a check on the C: drive. not sure how to use check disk on a slave drive though. -
http://www.redicecreations.com/specialreports/sucralose.html splenda is no better. no artificial sweetener is good, so saying you'll sweeten it yourself with spenda, no better than buying it with aspartame. just have water. as for beer. messes with your head, kills your kidneys...absolutely unattractive. don't know the goodness of fermented grapes, don't want to know. as for hitting the actual topic, caffeine-free is one thing. low/no sugar drinks pose a gigantic problem. always be choosy about you drinks, and if you come to something you cant choose between, just get water. its a universal antidote. as much as i like lemonade, i have to be choosy, most mixes contain aspartame...when i want lemonade, i think lemon, i don't want to become vegetable.
