  1. Most do. Some check for a Windows version number and abort the install. In that case, you can just run them in compatability mode for Xp.
  2. As of right now, ximage is warez. Expect a full release of a WIM extractor/modifier/creator by the time Beta 2 comes around.
  3. Nice flame-bait there ^^. Not even the right forum. When you want to compute with the big boys, we'll probably still let you in.
  4. The old AIW card might work if you can find the hacked driver floating around on the internet somewhere. The old AIW cards are not pure hardware mpeg2 encoders so all of the work has to be done by the CPU. This makes it impractical to do anything else with your PC while you're recording. And you can forget using two tuners if one of them encodes in software. My recommendation: sell the old card and buy a MCE certified card.
  5. FUD, FUD, FUD! Files in DVR-MS have to be "converted" to mpeg2 if you want to burn to DVD or edit. Otherwise they're just MPEG2 files with an additional wrapper. There is free software available that will rip the wrapper off if you'd like. You can stream your recorded TV to other computers in your house or save the files on another machine. Quality settings are also available in MCE2005. DVD-MS do have the same quality of mpeg2 files because that's exactly what they are: Mpeg2 files. Furthermore, Microsoft have gone to great lengths to ensure optimal video quality on multiple types of displays. Assuming you have a good cable signal and a quality capture card/receiver you will not be disappointed.
  6. Sounds like you don't know what you're doing. 1. You can't buy MCE 2002. 2. You can't upgrade any MCE to 2005. 3. When I go to my system properties I see 2005. 4. You're probably booting your old OS 5. If you have a CD key for 2002 it is warez.
  7. The format is proprietary but it is in no way complicated. DVR-MS is basically a regular MPEG2 file with a "wrapper" containing extra metadata. There are many programs out there that will strip the metadata leaving you with a straight MPEG2 file, all without transcoding the file. None of the Media Center versions will work properly without a true hardware accelerated MPEG2 encoder. Well, a few will work but not without hacks and very high CPU usage while recording.
  8. I don't know about this specific driver set but some often require a DLL file which must also be added to the CD. Does yours?
  9. The wizard you speak of is the OOBE Wizard or Out of the Box Experience. Everything is explained here in the guide.
  10. B.n. = Before nLite A.n. = After nLite B.n.: "How do I add this feature..." "Well you have to modify...and add this..." A.n.: "How do I add this feature..." "Use nLite..." In some cases nLite is not the answer. Don't get me wrong, it is a great program but there are some people who prefer learning instead of just using a wizard or automated program to do something. Since I can't find any detailed notes or whitepapers on how nLite operates, I'm still inclined to offer the "old" way of doing things.
  11. No. The carriage returns are not understood by setup.exe. Most likely, the first line will probably be the only one it sees.
  12. Someone said 98 was a 16-bit OS. Oh my. RTFM. The last 16-bit OS was Windows 3.1. There's a ton of new hardware that won't run on anything other than 2000/XP. 98 doesn't support HT, can't use sufficient amounts of memory to run the latest apps, and can't utilize hardware DEP. So yeah, depends on what boat you're in.

    XP nightmare

Rule of thumb: Think before you format! You need to read up on basic PC troubleshooting. Formatting is not a solution.
  14. Best for what? Gaming? 3D modeling? 2D graphics only? Multi-head support? Video capture? Video out?
  15. 2000 should be fine. I've run it on much older, slower hardware.
  16. I don't understand how this is allowed to be posted? This thread documents hex editing files and circumventing built in operating system checks allowing you to install unlicensed software (warez). This info was posted on an independent website for a good while. MS came down on the author and had it removed.
  17. I'm not exactly sure. However, I do know that you triple posted this topic. Don't do that. There are several pieces of software that allow you to delete/reset specific pieces of MCE data. Google it. One of them is a PowerToy.
  18. Should the topic title be "Top 5 games you're playing right now?" because it seems like everyone has forgotten about (or isn't old enough) to appreciate the old stuff. There are a lot of really good games out now. However, a ton of innovation came out of older games. Older Favorites in no order: 1. Quake I 2. Doom II 3. Myst 4. Commander Keen (all of them) 5. Original Wolfenstein 6. Warcraft III 7. Raptor: Call of the Shadows 8. Terminal Velocity 9. One Must Fall 10. Max Payne 11. A whole bunch of text based RPGs whose names escape me. New Favorites in no order: 1. Half-Life 2 2. Grand Theft Auto Vice City 3. Unreal Tournament 2004 4. Need for Speed Underground 2

    Best PDA

A proper Pocket PC or Smart Phone runs rings around a blackberry. You can do so much more with a Windows Mobile than anything from RIM. All the manufacturers are using Windows Mobile 2003 SE (2005 soon) so the user experience is about the same. You need to look at features that are relevant to you: memory, expansion, cpu speed, wireless connectivity, etc. Dell offers by far the best bang for the buck. HP and other look overpriced by comparison.
  20. Obviously, the patcher was coded well before SP1 was released so it is changing hex values at the wrong offset which breaks the dll file. You'll have to restore an original SP1 uxtheme.dll file. Edit: ...and wait for someone to update the patcher or do it yourself.
  21. Hmmm...that's about 832 MB. Is this a Longhorn ISO? If so, you're posting in the wrong forum and you can forget about splitting it onto two CDs. Longhorn packs everything into a WIM file which currently cannot be extracted. You can either burn to a 99 minute CD-R or to a DVD. I wouldn't recommend the 99 minute though. Many if not most CD-Rom drives won't allow the laser to go past the 89 minute mark. And if your CD-RW drive is the original drive from a Dell, Gateway, IBM, etc. it probably won't overburn. If I'm completely wrong and this is not Longhorn 5048, you can split up the installation (assuming this is Windows Xp/2000 unattended) onto 2 CDs. Instructions are in the unattended guide.
  22. Does anyone else here have this model or any other model of Asus notebook?
